This was a very determined effort by the owners of Comanche. Mike Sanderson, Stu Banytine, Stan Honey, these are legendary names in sailing. Comanche probably sailed more than 700 miles to win a 628 mile race, as she went far out to sea to avoid the light air closer to shore. Comanche represents a totally new approach to monohull sailboat design. Her design minimizes the amount of wetted area when she heels over, which means less resistance. The drawback is the performance in light air, when she is very slow.
Scott - absolutely correct, some points of sail and in light air Comanche gives up ground to the “skinny old boats” but in 80% of the others she’s faster by far.
So unless she’s in the right air all the tech she’s got built in doesn’t do a damn bit of good. That’s where the tactician and skipper make or break a boat

They are only missing headsail keeling.
This race is not the Everest of ocean racing. The Volvo round the world race would be the Everest. Or one of the French dominated ocean races. The hype, mostly nationalistic Aussie ozzie, surrounding this race is pretty over top. It lasts for 2 or 3 days. Nothing compared to many other races.
The 1998 edition of the Sydney to Hobart claimed several lives, and many boats. But you are right, the Whitbread-Volvo-Ocean Race Round the world is probably the most taxing of the off-shore races, as the pedal is to the metal 24/7, even in the Southern Ocean.

Watch any youtube video on the Sydney Hobart disaster. This is the most dangerous "short sprint" race.
@@Daytonaman675 Sure, the run down to Tasmania presents potentially deadly hazards, but it is as you say a short race. That was my point, it could not be called the Everest of ocean racing.
