Mahabang pila pero nakabibinging katahimikan, napakalungkot, nakapapanlulumo, nakakaiyak at sa katabing matataas na gusali may mga sniper. Ninoy was a guest speaker in an open forum at our university when I was still in college in the late-70s(?)... back then he was so vocal in advocating for the recognition, albeit legalization, of the CPP as a political party in order that the political parties in the Philippines would be truly polarized...
he explained that there was no essential difference between the two leading political parties at that time, the Nacionalista & Liberal parties, as both were gunning for the same programs of government...
He said he was not a member of any Communist group, but he would welcome the idea of a political party representing the communist ideology, or even other groups espousing a UK-like parliamentary system, or Federalist views as in Germany, or with Russian-like Socialist structure... so that Pinoys could be presented with truly different forms of government vastly in contrast to the democratic system we have, in order that they can make a choice as to what form of government is relevant and doable for our needs...
After our experience with the Spanish rule, the Japanese occupation and the American system, the political situation in our country was going nowhere, and getting worse... he said maybe in the course of time, Filipinos could develop & refine an adaptable, acceptable, and applicable system of government that is original and effective since it would have been truly moulded from our own nuances, and based on our inherent evolution as a people with our own history & social norms... and not just having to copy the American system which he thought was not working for our good...
He believed that was the intrinsic reason why we were not getting the political maturity we so needed to progress & make headway internationally...
I believe that due to Ninoy's open-mindedness, liberalist thinking, his daring & boldness why he was branded a communist...

First & foremost Ninoy Aquino suffered &:died under the dictatorial hands of Ferdinand Marcos, his wife Imelda, collaborated by their military & cronies in his fought for his country's freedom & democracy. His only weapon was empowered by his fearless use of the 1st commandment ( freedom of speech ) Take note, Ninoy aside from being an effective Senator, he was a brilliant journalist that's why he was so fearless in letting the world know about what's going on in his country good or bad. Branded as a communist & all the bad remarks & false accusations they could throw on him are good enough to incarcerate & put him in prison with no court trials, another violation of human rights under Marcos regime. Ninoy should be declared a national hero officially & undoubtedly for his good works in general with emphasis on publishing books as part of history under the school curriculum of education. Bottom line, " NINOY AQUINO " & his exemplary quality of deeds to fight for his country's democratic form of govt. & human rights will forever live n our minds & hearts. Hopefully, In another dimension, where he is now, there's no more pain & suffering but only exploration of eternal freedom. REST IN PEACE NINOY!
KEY POINTS FROM THE LIVE:
(1) Prof. Torres: Ninoy deserves respect for his contributions to the country and what he died for. On the other hand, the National Hero's Committee of the Philippines (NHCP) thinks that: "the designation of someone as a hero is better left to the people."
(2) Prof. Torres: We tend to count our history as achievements of one person, this creates a false identity for a lot of the legacies done by the other leaders of the country
(3) Heroes are flawed people, but what they did was something beyond what any human being can do. "They do something for a cause much higher than themselves"
(4) Though Ninoy was Marcos Sr.'s greatest opponent, he still held a certain respect for the former President (this can be seen in Ninoy's speeches)
(5) Response to the comment "Ninoy is traitor not a hero. Marcos is the real hero of EDSA:" This is false. During EDSA, when the mob entered Malacañang, they found a blackboard in one of the Planning rooms, showing an entire graph of how they (the Armed Forces thru the directives of Marcos Sr.) were going to attack Camp Aguinaldo. In other words, it was planned. Some of the Generals even claimed that there were, in fact, orders to fire at the crowd but they just refused to do it. (So how can Marcos be the hero?)
(6) Is it true that Ninoy was a co-founder of NPA? While there is always a possibility that Ninoy contacted members of the NPA, considering Tarlac along with Central Luzon was a hotspot of communist activities in the 60s and 70s, saying that he had contact or knew some of the members does NOT necessarily mean that he was a member.
(7) Learn the difference between National Democratic Front of the Philippines, Communist Party of the Philippines, and New People's Army of the Philippines.
(8) Was Ninoy CIA? This accusation came up when Ninoy was still in prison. In an interview in 1978, he said he "worked" with the CIA a few times when he was still travelling all over Asia as a NEWS reporter (he wasn't in politics yet). This doesn't necessarily mean that he was CIA or that he was being controlled by the Agency.
(9) Was Ninoy a convicted criminal? This is a fact. He was convicted and sentenced by the Military Court during Martial Law. However, according to Atty. Caranza, the Supreme Court later ruled and overturned the ruling of the Military Court citing that any judgement rendered by such a body over a civilian is null and void for lack of jurisdiction.
(10) Ninoy helped Filipinos realize what was really happening during the Marcos Sr.'s Administration. His assassination stirred a national consciousness to resist the dictatorship
(11) The youth should develop critical-thinking so that they can answer things for themselves, and be able to compare their answers with what they see on the Internet and with what their superiors tell them about the Philippine History. It is important that they are able to decide for themselves, and even to challenge opinions in a healthy and informed discourse.
(12) Filipinos should look at the big picture and learn the facts on both sides, that's why Marcos Sr.'s Administration should be studied--both the good and the bad, as well as the story of the Opposition.
(13) In his own diary, Marcos Sr. wrote of his plans to declare Martial Law
