Ok I know I pronounced mortar and pestle as "motor and pestle" and boy am I getting flamed for that LOL
Clearly pyro is not your domain so please just stick to pure chemical stuff
My heart brain body seperately hurts after seeing that charcoal making process
and your final product is what we call turtle powder not black powder
It was slower than an old lady
I assumed you were doing that on purpose. That'd be in line with parts of your humor.
@@user-ur5yg3cx8t I wasn't trying to make it as good as I could. I was just trying to reenact the first discovery of it!
Next time say MORDOR and pestle, continue the cycle
I love your humor
Thank you! I watch your videos and love them!
Most of it's peak dry humor, tho the domestic abuse jokes are a bit of a miss
@@made.online2149 it was meant to show what chris brown did in a negative and funny way, not to encourage domestic abuse.
@made.online2149 DV jokes are hilarious
I was chopping wood barefoot and ended up creating a new orifice on my foot, took like 7 stitches to patch up. Glad to see you have some good footwear protecting your toes!
Not sure the barefoot and the stitches are causally linked. My mother always told me that I would get "something in my foot" if I walked around barefoot but the only time I have ever got 'something in my foot' I have been wearing shoes. Can't argue with foot based science like that.
What do you mean anecdote ≠ evidence?
Did you receive brain damage, ie because clearly you got it. Who the hell chops wood barefoot.
That probably hurt... But fortunately this channel has got that covered too. To make it hurt less, look into kratom extracts
That elixir of immortality sure did turn into dust of blowing a golf ball sized hole through people real fast.
It’s the elixir of immortality because you go to heaven or hell or wherever and have all that fun
Not exactly that fast, they made rockets for fireworks before they figured out putting rockets on arrows for war, even longer to figure out cannons and muskets.....
Did the Chinese ever figure out guns on their own? I thought that was a European thing.
@@zchris13 China had literal handheld cannons that you point at someone and light a fuse. They invented guns
No. It's the elixir of "mortality"
The humor is on point! Making chemistry interesting
chris brown would disagree!
I made black powder when I was 14. Far too young to be playing around with sublimed sulfur powder, saltpeter and trying to make my own ground up charcoal.. I ended up catching it on fire prematurely and burning several little pits into a wooden coffee table. I kind of got in trouble but not really, only had to do was refinish the coffee table and I chose one of those faux marble tops. It ended up looking great. I didn't actually get any in trouble until I attempted making nitroglycerin well that's a totally different story.
I'd love to hear your nitroglycerin story. I've never made it which is kinda weird, but it's BP lowering effects always dissuaded me.
I almost blew a hole in my ceiling when I tried making nitroglycerin at 14. I didn't even have sulfuric acid so I had to improvise and use something else (guess what). It was effective. Yes, I still have all my fingers and both eyes.
@stamasd I'm unable to guess, what did you use instead of sulfuric acid?
@@stamasd8500 i dint know you could use anything else than sulfuric acid, what can you use instaed?
I made black powder when I was about the same age, 14. I was in 9th grade and we did an experiment in chemistry class where we mixed lead nitrate and potassium iodide solutions together. Ended up with a yellow solution of potassium nitrate and lead iodide precipitate which we had to collect in filter paper. I collected all the remaining fluid, now clear after the filtration, which was a solution of potassium nitrate, into a few beakers and put it in my locker to evaporate. The Teacher, Mr Kitchen, started looking for the leftovers and everyone pointed to me. I didn't get in trouble but we all got a stern lecture on the dangers of using chemicals improperly. He confiscated the beakers but I eventually got ahold of some saltpeter somewhere and found the ratio to mix it
in an encyclopedia. Made a nice little bomb using a firecracker as a fuse and blew all the caulking out of the stern of a rowboat someone was keeping at the beach near my house. It's a wonder any boomers lived to adulthood. There's a movie about one kid who built a nuclear reactor in his garage! Google The Radioactive Boy scout. So much shit we did and our parents did to us that would get people lengthy prison sentences today was no big deal back then.
I was watching in a pitch-black room, and the magnesium oxidation felt like a flashbang. Great vid btw
3:35 the torch was the issue. you're scorching the surface causing it to ash up, which insulates and protects the rest of the material, a soft flame lets the resins melt and catch fire. that's also ignoring the speed of the jet which only further hurts this.
Also, you are consuming the oxigen just at the point where is needed the most
@@MaxCarponera you're not really consuming it as much as blowing it away and overflooding the region with fast jets of flames/unburned fuel. Think of the argon jets while tig-welding as an oversimplified example.
just one of those applications where a soft flame from a bic or a few burning papers would have been the right tool for the job.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you become one of the fastest growing science youtubers. Quite entertaining:)
I remember making gunpowder when I was young. Making little volcanos was fun, but I wanted to make a long line like they did in the movies. So with much care I proceeded to write my name with the powder on our stone patio before standing back setting it alight. As I watched the flames move along the line, I couldn't help think what it I get caught. So after it had gone out , being a good little boy and wanting to clean up my mess (evidence) I proceeded to take out the hose wash away what remained. Unfortunately this was not so as alas, I had melted the top surface of the stones. So there in perfect black charred glory was my name melted for all to see into stone. I got a right bollocking from my dad when he came home and looked out , especially when I tried to deny it was me.
I did the same thing with wd 40 on the shop floor 😂
It's ironic that gunpowder was made from an attempt to create an elixir of immortality...
Immortality elixirs were all the rage back then. The closest they ever got was one that caused impotency.
It's probably a myth. The East Roman Empire had flame throwers that used a mix of potassium nitrate, sulfur and resin, two of the three ingredients of black powder.
Well what if I don't want to leave now that the video is over? How would you even tell hmmmm?
It's OK. I wore crocs in elementary school too.
Oh, crap. Am I getting the banhammer now?
Lmao my guy you had trouble lighting the log because you're supposed to light the wrapper and let that ignite the rest
I'm most impressed that he somehow got that paint can lid to go on upside down, Bravo!
Otherwise it would greatly diminish the Chris Brown effect.
I punched the air for no reason when you said "motor and pestol" and you kept saying it just to trigger me but I love your video thanks for this
Leave the wrapping on the fire log and light that on fire. That's how you are supposed to do it.
Just in case anyone disagrees - this is correct - the paper is coated and acts like a wick
pretty sure there are even instructions on the paper
"Small knife" pulls out a K-bar.
I love it!
It's okay, in the apocalypse I'll help you in the woods and you can help me with chemistry.
the smaller the particles, the faster it burns, so sifting through a fine mesh or ball milling it for several hours would increase the burnrate immensely
The chemistry was great, but watching you fail to light a fire log with a blowtorch was incredibly entertaining.
8:54 Me: "Would be cool If this dude added some magnesium flak..."
Thank you for that.
you should get some of the steel enforced crocs made by stuff made here
You should talk to @StuffMadeHere about getting some steel toes for those bad boys!
If you wet it, form it into golf ball sized lumps. Let it dry and then turn it back into powdery small pieces, it has more bang.
I've never heard of a motor and pestle, is that like a gas powered version?
IM SORRY
I can't believe this channel is just over a month old. You're gonna blow up dude
If he keeps playing with gunpowder he just might!
9:20
When he says that Spider Man 2 quote, he sounds like Patrick Bateman.
Your channel is gonna get big really fast and you deserve it. Your sense of humor is fucking great, man. Keep it up!
"Hey, Chemdelic, ain't'cha never heard of steel-toed boots?"
"Yeah, tried them. They dull too many axe blades."
Steel toe crocs are next up on my attire to buy
Like he said, dont open the can before its cool enough, because if its still at temp, the sudden in-rush of air getting to the charcoal can immediately cause it to flame up quite intensely.
This channel is going to blow up. no pun intended.
Those Crocs are a super flex!
Hardwood usually sucks for this, get some willow if you can. Particle size is key. Reactivity can be greatly enhanced by taking the milled product, and refluxing it with xylene for 30 min, drying, and finally remilling. Ball mills are great. Good luck!
If I had willow I would use it. No ball mill unfortunately so I couldn't :(. The Xylene is a good idea though!
@@chemdelic If you are brazen enough you could certainly mill the mixture in the coffee grinder, BP is really quite insensitive. Holding down the button with my finger not a thrill I would seek experiencing again these days, so I would recommend modding the grinder to be perma-on and using the plug to run it from a safer distance.
@@TheBackyardChemist also granulating the finely milled BP helps to get a much faster burn rate. This can be done by wetting the BP with an alcohol/water mixture and pressing it through a small to middle sized screen and letting it dry afterwards. Good for lift or burst charges in fireworks.
1:00 This man cracked the concrete lol!
as far as elixirs of life this is better then drinking mercury.
Time to watch your channel grow man keep up the good work I’m pretty sure a lot of us are going to be sticking around for a while
hey man don't worry about the crocs korean grandmas would love you
Next logical step is thermite
this is like peak commentary. my guy and his channel is on it's way to become the next ''Cody's lab'', ''nerdRage'' or ''nileRed''. love the dedication even at this early stage !!!
Pro tip: If you take your mixed powder (charcoal, Sulphur, and potassium nitrate) and mix it with water, you can then take that goop , spread it on a drying surface (cookie sheet pan type thing) and allow the dissolved mixture to dry into a sheet of dry stuff. Grind the flakes of that stuff into a fine powder and try it again. Even better results!
*Disclaimer* This is theoretical knowledge and definitely didn't happen back when I was in my early teens.
It should be extremely little water. The best is to ball mill it and press it or granulate it with dextrin or rice starch.
Yup. I built myself a ball mill back in the day. Made many kg of really-good "lift" and "burst" powder with it. Casually-mixed BP mixture is known as "green mix". It's FAR less powerful than powder than has been milled then pressed and corned.
I love your descriptive techniques it’s why I’m a subscriber lol
Not even a couple minutes in, and I already know that I'll binge watch your entire channel instead of sleeping tonight

Black powder: NO DONT MAKE ME A MINI SUN BY ADDING THAT!
yooo I just subscribed yesterday. Im for this. Love your content, man!
Crocks. There someone mentioned crocks. do it.
You sir get ready for a ban!
What a timeline to be in.
You, Extractions&Ire/Explosions&Fire, and NileRed.
Cheers.
And Doug's lab, that chemist, Chemplayer, etc, etc.
You're not very good at cutting wood, but you're an expert at mining with crocs!
Just subscribed ... thanks for great and funny content you future yt star. All the best from Croatia.
Willow is a preferred wood for making charcoal for black powder. Also, Flower of Sulfur is needed. Sulfur flour, if I recall, contains too much acid and will inhibit the reaction. Lastly, some will take the dry mixture, add water, mix it into a slurry, then air dry it.
You recall incorrectly
It should be milled and not sublimated sulfur. The acid doesn't make a difference in black powder, but it might make mixes with chlorates very sensitive, but with modern sulfur it's not really an issue anymore. I have seen that there is as little H2SO4 as 4 mg in a whole kg of sulfur.
This is exactly what I needed to prank my friends. Thank you!
You can replace the charcoal with powdered sugar. Much less work and eliminates the need for sulfur. And try to use Potassium chlorate instead of nitrate.
this was one of your most entertaining videos yet.
It burned way too slowly because it was not wet ground and mixed adequately. After the wet grinding, it should then be dried thoroughly before use.
Yeah, I should have mixed it with a bit of alcohol to mix then evaporated it off. If I had a ball mill, I would use that too. I was trying to stick to the old way of doing it!
@@chemdelic 50% water 50% ethanol works best
@@chemdelic you also need to activate the charcoal for more surface area.
You should have warned me that you were going to generate ultraviolet light, I would've worn my welding goggles.
I was seeing spots for a couple minutes
THIS GUY IS SO FUNNY! i love your stuff man!
Great content man! Nice crocs as well lol
Fire starting tip: use the little fire starter tablets from your local sporting goods store. The good ones are tiny but burn for like 10 minutes.
I will be using those in a future video as they are 100% hexamine
oh no I know where this is going
everything looked very professional.
Love your videos omg!!!
Fun to watch your content and also love the humor
I also don’t chop my wood with crocks on 😂
I tried to be as historically accurate as possible
@@chemdelic Crazily enough crocs were invented around the same time as gunpowder. The early versions were made from gunpowder which caused a lot of issues so they ditched that.
my guy your content is really good keep it up
Oh my God you don’t unwrap the fire starting log lol I really hope that was just part of your sense of humor and in reality know that you’re supposed to burn the paper to get the log started 😂
Legit almost got banned as soon as I saw the crocks... lmfao.
Keep up the good work man.
Liverking says he approves of your croc's!😁, back in the 80s we called them jellies!😂✌️
Ahhh another golden channel to consume lololll I'm here for the ride bro!
10/10 content. Love the humor!
It is equal parts:
Earth (coal)
Wind
Fire (brimstone)
But cannot be accomplished without
Spirit,
the 4th element.
Making gunpowder is fun, I did it several years ago for my 4th-grade science fair experiment.
crocks = medieval, clearly
Love the vids keep it up!
safety crocs. well done sir
I used to use that song for my work phone ringtone last year, and I get flashbacks when I load up your videos because that usually meant not so great news
This channel is like NileRed: watchlist edition
9:07 I enjoyed watching that at 1am
I too love black power
Your sposed to keep the paper on the fire starter log and light the paper!
I am terrible at reading directions lol
@Chemdelic and yet you find a way! Keep moving forward!
Your underrated man, your awesome!
great editing skills bro
Crocs + motor pestle + -15% charcoal (+W content)
I feel qualified to speak on the foot protection, but only because about a decade ago I accidentally tried to remove the end of a middle finger with an axe. They stitched it back together, though.
Crocs are an excellent choice for the surgeon and triage staff, and for you; They're cheap, and easy to cut off at the hospital so they can stitch you back together. Plus you don't fret about having nice shoes destroyed.
I hope you're aware that by putting magnesium in the gun powered, you should now have a capable starter for your fire starter.
Thems safety crocs.
We have the same humor, I freaking love it😂😂😂
The strongest chemist I have ever seen
I'm so happy I found this channel.
Thank you!
The paper its wrapped in is the firelog starter. I like the humor.
If I didn't have to wear shoes with laces at work I'd be in Crocs right now. You go man
Willow tree makes the very best charcoal.
A rock tumbler with ceramic balls ( kitchen baking pastry balls) for charcoal. Wash dry KNO³ next.
Mix ingredients with a small amount of water. To make thin cakes ,dry with wooden bowl and wooden spoon crush cakes.
Now you have fire arm powder. After sive the powder.
Thanks for the tips!
Channel is growing fast
Real fast
comment for the youtube algo! love your vids.
You don't even need to force me to watch it I'll watch it all day brother 🤙🏻
We will watch your career with great interest
dude your great i hope you do well in the algorythem
You're not the only one who has problems with those fire starter logs. I break them and light the side I broke. Seems like the jagged side lights easier.
leave the paper on them and light it - the coated paper acts as a wick
😂😆 lol the way you explain it got me on the floor laughing
love the crocs
thank you funny magic man
A ball-mill is essential to mix the ingredients well enough to have combustable powder. Where the powder fully ignites and leaves nothing burning after. Just use lead balls for grinding media inside the mill. ("Ball' mill) Thats the real stuff you can make fireworks and gun powder with!!

I got one and will be updating that video!
