As someone who has had to step into dog fights and separate dogs, I can’t imagine how anyone could enjoy purposely training dogs to fight, then enjoy watching them doing so. I also have loved football my entire life watching from a young girl with my dad. I have been blessed with seeing some of the best men who ever walked on a football field play. When Michael took the field after Chandler went down hurt, I realized I was seeing a QB unlike any I had seen before. Michael was just an amazing athlete. He was exciting. He made defenses look bad. Michael Vick was the real deal. When the dog fighting ring broke in the news, I just didn’t understand. How could this personable, handsome, young man, gifted with such athletic abilities, who had a 130 MILLION DOLLAR contract with 37 MILLION in guaranteed money, who had done so much for the city of Atlanta especially the kids in Atlanta, possible be involved in such a sickening cruel activity? It made no sense. It pissed me off. After Michael served his sentence he did a several parts series on BET. He went back to his neighborhood, a tough scary place to grow up but he did make it out of there, shined in high school football, and got a scholarship to Virginia Tech, then was Round 1 Pick 1 by the Falcons. That was all known but it was the rest that I learned that helped me to understand the dog fighting. Dog fighting was the norm in his neighborhood. He saw his first dog fight at only 5 or 6 years old. Black men were there. Black men excited about the dog fight, proud when their dog won. It was a gathering of men not often seen in the neighborhood together, happy, laughing. It was so exciting for all the young black boys. Never were these young black boys told by anyone that dog fighting was horrible. Every dog fight was as good as the last. Michael had relatives and child hood friends who hadn’t gone to college. Another thing I learned in those programs was Michael’s loyalty even to his father who as a man on the streets had never been a dad to Michael. The dog fighting ring was put together for family members and friends who had little to no future. Michael and that group of men living in Michael’s house in Virginia where the dogs were raised, all still had the same excitement during the dog fights with older adult men still showing up. It was like an addiction. Michael was very honest saying he couldn’t wait to get to Virginia for the dog fights. There was so much more in the series on BET and as I watch those programs I realized I had no right to judge this young man. I was raised in security, living on military bases as my dad was a lifer in the military. I had an excellent childhood. I wasn’t exposed to the things Michael was. I didn’t hear gun shots every single night while trying to sleep. There were no dead bodies where I was raised. I hadn’t walked in his shoes. I also learned that Michael was truly sorry. I mean deep in his heart sorry, he had let so many people down and sorry for fighting dogs. Michael served an incredible sentence for what he did. He paid for his cruelties. He also gave one million dollars to rehabilitate the dogs in his kennels. Only one had to be put down. All the rest, 49 of the 50, were rehabilitated and found homes due to the million dollars Michael gave. Michael went above and beyond his court requirements in watching movies and learning about the horrors of dog fighting. He went to high schools to talk to kids who like him had never been told how bad dog fighting is. He does everything he can to help eradicate dog fighting in our country. I’m glad Michael got to play football again. He was able to pay off all his debts after filing bankruptcy. Michael has paid off all his debts now including dog fighting. He paid a heavy price for his disgusting treatment of those poor dogs but that actually saved him and thankfully gave all those abused pit bulls a new life filled with kindness and love. Getting caught was the best thing that could have happened for the dogs especially and for Michael. I’m sure there are many who don’t agree with me but Michael Vick today is a changed man...he is a good man. I still maintain Michael introduced a level of being a Quarterback that rewrote the position. He cost himself two years of play at his peak and lost the opportunity of going into the HOF. Its a damn shame but Michael owned what he had done. Him being so well known brought dog fighting into the light of day and showed those that chose to do so, how serious their conviction will be when caught.
While you are right that Matt Ryan isn't trash, he did struggle a lot last season. Having to put up with watching the inconsistencies every week just sucked. It was hard to watch the Falcons go from beating the Panthers to losing to the Saints. Although Matt Ryan struggling did have a lot to do with the fact that the Falcons did not have a starting Center, they were working with a new Offensive Scheme, and Ryan really didn't have many targets on that field. If they want to be successful they are going to have to be able to rely on Sanu to make plays and Justin Hardy needs to step up.
