Anyone with an interest in native American artifacts should see what's on display in Antwerp, Belgium. The stuff is absolutely amazing, but I felt a little sad it was all outside of the countries of origin.

I don't care if some remuneration has to be given for the artifacts, but those items belong to our land because they are part of our history.
Left to us by our ancestors for over thousands of years.

8 And we multiplied exceedingly, and spread upon the face of the land, and became exceedingly rich in gold, and in silver, and in precious things, and in fine workmanship of wood, in buildings, and in machinery, and also in iron and copper, and brass and steel, making all manner of tools of every kind to till the ground, and weapons of war-yea, the sharp pointed arrow, and the quiver, and the dart, and the javelin, and all preparations for war.

I hate that anyone in today's world would hold onto such things. If a people/museum/country "appreciates" the artifact so much, a replica should be made and the original returned. As for the private collector,if they do not own it for its beauty, then they should never have acquired it in the first place.
To hold on to such things is selfish and abhorrent.

Most of the artefacts were looted. Ever been to the British Museum? Literally a display of their looted procession. And those that were eventually sold off were usually done by the Westerners themselves among each other, or wanna-be Western archaeologists digging them up and selling them abroad under the rug as it happens so often to this day in Latin America or Egypt for that matter.
Or the trend these days, how the US and allies looted the Iraqi museums during the war. So the Western museums should ask the money from the middleman the Western looters themselves.
