Here in NW Australia we have a opposite way of planting. Our temperatures get extremely hot so we plant below ground level, exposed roots will stress with heat and wind, plus in the unlucky event of a cyclone a lower centre of gravity for a young tree will help it withstand extreme winds, I still have a berm but have it slightly down hill from the berm.

You two make an excellent teaching team, one instructs, the other asks the questions we'd want to know too. I'm repotting my Barbados at this moment, came to get pointers on soil. The rootball info, planting above grade so roots are a bit exposed to breath really helped. A great tree for TUCSON zone 9 but must watch at frost time.

I have two of these trees on either side of the entry arch to my front porch area. Watering “wide” is very important for root growth in Mesa, Arizona. That’s true for most all plants and trees here. Drip watering is ok if you use the right sprayer heads around the periphery of the trunk or stem.

Hi Shamus, my barbados cherry trees are dark green and super healthy. I am in palm desert so our weather is similar. I cannot leave the fruit on as long as you recommend because the birds get to them. The fruit does continue to ripen after you pick them. I fertilize the soil around the tree with diluted urine. 90 percent water, 10 percent urine. Only recommend doing that if you're not taking meds. Also the dilution prevents a smelly yard.

My other Barbados went dormant in Winter, we had some freeze and frost 2 weeks. It did not come out of dormancy until mid May when our temps reached 108F-110F (42-42C). I thought it was dead for 4.5 months but kept watering it a little anyway. I'm glad I did cuz one day in May he started putting out green leaves again. Took 4.5 mos to come out of dormancy!

They get around 2-5 hours of filtered sun and 2-4 hours full sun. Should I move them? They flower every year but no fruit yet. One of them is nearly 9 ft. and I want to prune and fertilize but I'm so lost.

Saurav, what time of year is it when you wrote this? Because my Barbados went into dormancy in Winter (December) and turned to sticks and I thought it was dead, I even scratched the bark and there was no green down under, but I continued to water it a little anyway. When Spring came in February/March NOTHING, still sticks. It looked dead since December: 4 months STICKS. SUDDENLY one day in middle of MAY (4.5 months later) I saw little leaves returning on it.
Now it is June and leaves are all growing back. We got freeze and frost for 2 weeks here in Winter and I thought that is what killed it but it didn't kill it. It just went into dormancy for a really long time but he pulled through it. It looked dead for 4.5 months. ADVICE: I would keep watering it a little and keep it a warm and sunny place in your garden. Give him 4 months like I did and see if he puts out leaves again.

I water it about every 3/4 days. The tree looks healthy but the flowers won't stay on. Am I doing something wrong? Should I use tomatoes bloosom set spray on it? Is it even safe to use that stuff?
