Jussi is the only tenor who brings tears to my eyes. His voice is so strong but at the same time so sweet and tender.
There never will be a singer like Bjorling. He “owns” this song. It brings tears to my eyes. The greatest tenor of all time. IMHO.
As a Swede I can say his articulation off each word is indeed crtystal clear.
It brings more like a waterfall to my face.

His voice stands out among other tenor voices by being as strong and manly as a baritone,
and his timbre has spoken to me in a special way since I was very little.
Having said that, I also recommend Håkan Hagegård
(my idol when I was eight years old) and Peter Mattei,
two of my other "voice loves".

There have been many Tenors with God-given voices, but for me, Jussi was, and is, the greatest tenor who ever lived. The combination of power and sweetness is overpowering and brings tears to my eyes each time I listen to him.
It is difficult not to agree.. he was beyond beautiful.. just stunning... rich... crystal smooth.... I can't even find the best words to describe his magnificence.
Hi Everyone! My Swedish grandmother, Gunborg, lived down the street from us. She grew up in Stockholm and loved watching the young Jussi Björling perform at the Royal Swedish Opera. She was my first musical influence as she loved to play the piano and sing opera. I was able to visit Sweden to visit my cousins in Stockholm and Småland as a young teen and my aunt made sure that I experienced a traditional Swedish Midsommar. It was only later in life that I realized how much Swedish culture I was immersed in growing up. Sweden is very dear to my heart as well as Jussi. Enjoy! 🌲
My great grandfather lived in Örebro in Sweden and he was a nonfamous tenor who went to sing in the US with an ensemble. Anyway, when my ggf had his birthdayparty, Jussi turned up to celebrate him. They sang together that day and that was a warm memory for my great grandfather🙂

I am distantly related to Christina Nilsson, she appeared in the movie Age of innocence in beginning. My mother looks quite like her, and as a descendant child, she was pushed to start playing the piano, and sing and entertain guests. And likewise I was encouraged to sing children's songs, when she practiced piano, when I grew up in 60ies..

And recently, my mother found out that I am distant cousins to Petra Mede. She said there was a TV show that traced her genetics to my Stockholm family. Sadly, she passed away and was in contact with Petra's father.
@@hakanliljeberg790 That's quite interesting. Sweden has a great singing tradition. I experienced that through my Swedish grandmother. I started piano at 5 at my grandmother's house and tried to sing opera just like her!
My Mom, a third generation Swedish American, grew up in a Swedish-American community in New Jersey with memories of Jussi and his family performing over the radio, and then hearing him perform at the Met. He presented a nearly impossible standard for me to meet, as a baritone like her brother, albeit with a top.
If Pavarrotti himself can't compare himself, as just a human, to Jussi, it is ok for you not compare yourself to Jussi.
To quote Pavarotti: "“When I'm learning a new opera roll, I first listen to how Jussi Björling sang it. His voice was unique. I wish more than anything that people compare me with Jussi.”
When asked to compare himself to Björling Pavarotti said "After all, I'm only human!"
Agreed. Mind you, the 1st time I heard Pavarotti on the radio I asked my mother, an opera lover, who it was and her 1st guess was that it was Bjorling! Similar timbre but I think I still have to give the 'nod' to Bjorling.

@@doddsalfa Pavarrotti himself held Jussi Björling as his role model in singing. And I do agree with Pavarrotti, and not you. Björling has more feeling in his singing then what Pavarrotti has. Yes, I have listen to several of Pavarrotis recording of "O, Holy Night". It is great, no doubt. But he doesn't have this feeling, performance of the song. Even the breathing is perfect.

As I'm sure you noticed, Jussi sings this in the key of E major, which is a half step higher than Adolphe Adam's original composition in Eb and the key that most of the other great tenors sang it in. His high B at the end always gives me chills.

I grew up in a Swedish / Irish family, and my parents were opera fanatics. Bjorling was my father's favorite singer, so I was lucky enough to hear tons of Jussi's songs while growing up. His voice was peerless.

Listened to a story like 30 years ago about a guy from Sweden who was visiting New York. When he took a taxi and the driver heard he was from sweden, he said the ride was for free. The taxi driver told him that ever since he heard Jussi at the Metropolitan, he always drove people from sweden for free.

Jussi's son, Rolf, was also a tenor. I saw him in a recital back in the early 80's. He definitely had the Bjorling timber to his voice.
I was fortunate enough to hear Rolf in Tosca at Operan, wearing his father’s costume!

Bjorling is generally thought to have had the most perfectly placed voice; my parents saw him at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1950's. Thank you for posting this - a beautiful musical experience!
Jussi is just the best ever.
Björling‘s O HOLY NIGHT, whatever the language he sings it in, is still, IMO, the gold standard for this song. Tears flow often when I hear some of his Swedish songs. No other FULL lyric tenor besides Wunderlich & very young Di Stefano moves me as much & I have to rate Björling even a bit higher in that he had a remarkably long career (thanks to superb vocal training as a child that benefited him throughout his life) & was, despite his alcoholism, still an amazingly consistent stylist & musician. Di Stefano‘s best years were of limited duration but Wunderlich, had he lived, would perhaps have even surpassed Björling in mastering a variety of repertoire which in his 10 year career he began to demonstrate. At their best all 3 had instruments, that went straight to my heart.

Yep jussi bjorling is IMO the Greatest tenor ever! His voice was captivating, scintillating, liquid Gold 🇸🇪👍🇮🇪.

It is not Christmas for me until i listen to Jussi Bjöflings Oh Helga Natt on Christmas eve. It is so beutiful and holding so well even though it is so old. We have a few more Swedish singers who can manage it well too, but Jussi is just the best.
If the Angels' choir would have a leading tenor, that would be Jussi Björling. I don't see any way to analyze his voice other than praise. It's so effortless, pure and powerful.
He was a powerfully built man with a barrel chest, like a pipe organ. Superb control of his breath.
Glad you picked him up. He babysat for my mother when she was little. He was best friends with my grandfather. He is incredible as a singer.

I always cry when I hear his version, it is traditional to us to listen to this every Christmas. Superhugs from Sweden.
There have been many great tenors over the years. Many even active today, some of whom are just young pups!
But when Jussi sang, all the gods of Mount Olympus stood still and listened.
I think that old technology in the recording adds a small part to the magic. The breath of history, tormenting us, caressing us.
And as overwhelming the recordings can be, it still gives that impossible longing, when you realize that there are many people who have experienced something extraordinary as they sat down and listened to him in person. A desire that today is impossible to satisfy. Oh, how I hope that the memory will never fade from those that loved him.
I grew up with this song sung by Jussi each christmas, it always brought tears to my eyes and still does. Blessings from Sweden. 🤗

He had a HUGE career in the states. My own grandparents saw him sing at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. My parents loved his singing. My dad owned his recordings. My mom said he was the best tenor, ever. I now tell my children that Jussi Björling is the best tenor who ever graced this earth. My son is named after him. (Not Jussi, but his real name). His duet with Robert Merrill of Au Fond Du Temple Saint will never be topped. I did some chaperoning at the Lyric Opera, and I got goosebumps knowing that Mr. Björling had trod the same floor boards. His wife’s book is a very interesting read.

I listen to this song with Jussi Björling every Christmas. It's a tradition. His voice gives med goosebumps. Just like you did my eyes close out of joy. It's something with the vibrations in his voice. You feel a pleasure into the bone.
This was sung at my grandfathers funeral a month ago by his brother who has a magnificant deep voice despite beeing 88 years old. So powerful to hear Jussi sing it.

I've had a fondness for tenors all my life (now 85) Caruso, Pavarotti, Lanza (yes, Lanza!), di Stephano etc, but Jussi just left all of them in the dust. Thank heaven we still have his recordings.

Jussi's grandmother was a Finn, which is why he was known as "Jussi" which is a Finnish name. She called him with that name, and it stuck.
Now I'm curious... I wiki'd him, and his real name was Johan Jonatan Björling. Never knew! Because of course he used Jussi as his stage name as well, not just as a nickname with his family! Btw, the word for nickname in Swedish - if it's meant in a positive way - is 'smeknamn', which means something resembling 'cuddle name', or 'caress name'. :) (A negative nickname is 'öknamn', translated as 'beast name'; beast in the sense of a yoked animal (like an ox) that pulls a cart or some such). I digress...
I didn't know that! As a 100% Swede, I hope we can move past our past imperialistic ways and share the pride of having the greatest tenor in history with our Finnish cousins!

we also listened to Jussi Björling´s O Helga Natt as a X-mas tradition . As you may know Finland is a bilingual country based on our history as a part of Sweden
for over 600yrs. My Granpa and granma they were swedish speaking in Finland, so it was easy for us children to listen to swedish singers.

His birth name is actually Johan Jonatan Björling. As a toddler his Finish born grandmother nicknamed him Jussi which means “Gift from God” in Finish. Was she ever right.

Har alltid älskat Jussi... Oh, forgive me, please. I have always loved Jussi. I get emotional hearing this. Something more than just his voice, yes, it is! He's one soul with the music. I cannot explain - but every musician knows this. As you need three things for a fire, oxygen, heat, and a combustible substance even so with music. I've played hundreds of times accompanying singers singing this hymn/psalm.

To a Swedish reporter interviewing Pavarotti in hes summer house in Pesaro in Italy july 1988. He said it was Jussi that was hes favorite. When I want to practice a new opera, I first listen to how Jussi Björling did it. His voice was unique, and that is his way I want to walk. I would more than anything else wish people to compare me to Jussi Björling. That's how I strive to sing.

I always listen to Jussi Bjørling and O Helga Natt in December. Its one of my favourites to go to whenever i need to .. and im not even a christian. Im so happy he sang in swedish coz your emotions are always more deepfelt when singing in your mother tongue. I dont think true music lovers would skip it because of language. Jussi Bjørling is one of the greatest ever. I know this video is 2 years old, but i always watch Jussi stumbling over him. Thank you ☺️

I am a 62 y.o. Norwegian. I am used to hear Jussi played on my radio around Christmas since my childhood in the 1960ies. Today it is not Christmas for me becore Jussi has been singing. The song is so powerfull and it gives me chills from the very first word. I am not "in love" with the song or Jussi. This recording is bigger than that. It is just almighty. I do not prey to God. I prey to Jussi Björling.
There are no one on his level or above in music history, but one day he will get company by Angelina Jordan. A Swede and a half Swede.

Jussi never sang the role of Calaf in Turandot live ever, but made a great recording of it with nilsson and tebaldi, he was basically a lyric tenor and not the spinto powerful size voice of corelli, del monaco, giacomini, martinelli or tucker who all sang the Calaf role live and had large voices, but in Lyric roles and some spinto ones like trovatore and don carlo, jussi was successful, boheme was his signature role .
@@rst-3192 The volume on Bjorling's side of the Turandot recording had to be adjusted higher to equal Nilsson's powerful voice. Of course, Bjorling could never do this in the theater.
I grew up listening to Jussi on the Swedish radio. He singed like an male angel. Even the great Pavarotti thought a lot of our Jussi. We love him still.

I'm from Jussi's hometown, Borlänge. We have a Jussi museum up the street from where I'm currently residing, and the museum was previously his home (he was born in that house), but now, due to decrease in visitors caused by lack of interest, they're going to close the museum. There's been talk of moving it to Stockholm. As a lover of opera and classical music, and as a resident of the birthplace of Jussi, I must say it makes me very sad to see how the younger generation (making myself sound really old here) don't appreciate this, to me, immortal music. We have a statue of him here, and sometimes you can even hear his music coming out of speakers they've set up along the street, but I'm sure none of the kids today know who it is. My entire town has in fact changed for the worse.
Well, it's approaching Christmas, once again. Bjorling and/or Georges Thill, in THIS, specific song ... probably or easily, the best of all time, for very-specific reasons. Thanks for the upload!

There is only one thing wrong with Jussi's performance: He makes everyone else who tries to perform it just fall flat! Jussi's version is the ultimate one. I play it several times every Christmas, in fact it is not Christmas until we listen to Jussi!
Unfortunately, he drank himself into an early grave. Thank God we still have the recordings!
The version by Jan Peerce is also worth hearing.

This was a treat! Jussi is among the best tenors ever with a technique that is hard to match. But I think the singers should not be compared to each other rather just being one in the family of the best. It is a very different sound when you hear Caruso or Pavarotti bit it is not better or worse it is just good music. I love it. Thank you!
wakledodd I agree. What is very special with Jussi B. is, not only that he had a great voice, but also that in many of the recordings of Jussi B. there is a melancoly that is unique. I often get wet eyes after listening to him here on youtube. And I like it. But you are right about what you wrote here above.
It is even better if you speak Swedish. I was a few km away from him when the Swedish Radio announced his passing.
