नाथसंप्रदायाचे संस्थापक म्हणूनही त्यांच्याकडे पाहिले जाते, मच्छिंद्रनाथ यांना महादेव शंकराची शिकवण प्राप्त झाली होती.
ते कौल शैव धर्माशी संबंधित आहे.
ते चौऱ्यांशी महासिद्धांपैकी एक आहेत आणि गोरक्षनाथ यांचे गुरू मानले जातात,सुरुवातीच्या हठयोगातील आणखी एक ज्ञात व्यक्ती.
ते हिंदू आणि बौद्ध दोघांद्वारे पूज्य आहे आणि कधीकधी अवलोकितेश्वराचा अवतार म्हणून ओळखला जातात."
