I remember my Japanese professor sent this to our class. I have good memories of watching Japanese Tradition in labs and laughing so hard I was crying. She had a great sense of humour. Sadly she died of cancer in 2015. Thank you for the laughs, Sensei.

It's important to understand that this was made in Japan by Japanese and intended for a Japanese audience, as part of a series of "mockumentaries" that satirise the often wildly inaccurate foreign perceptions of Japanese customs. The percentage of people that don't realise it's a joke is statistically insignificant.

i understood that it's comedic since some parts were too absurd to be real, but some of it sounds like genuine advice, like what to say when entering and leaving the establishment or asking if the seat is taken or not
so i'm a bit confused now whether it's satire too and you shouldn't do that

      - Noone does this because it's insane

4:10 - Even if it's just for a comedy show, preparing a finger of sushi rice both so exceptionally cohesive that it survives being soaked so thoroughly in the sauce without losing a single grain, yet being non-sticky that it doesn't glue together fingers, counter, the pantsu of the maid from the previous shot, the curtains at the entrance, and everything in a three-kilometre epicentre just by its mere existence, is an outstanding feat of Japanese cooking craftsmanship.
