- #TMC2020, I certainly stepped out of my comfort zone on this build, I found there was a lot of problem solving I had to do while I was doing the dovetails, but thats the best way to learn, Thanks you to Emma, Steve and all the guys who put up the prizes but most of all thank you for letting me take part in the compition, Matty

Man oh man, you make beautiful stuff - I know you had to cut a lot of material to keep it under 20 minutes but that is an awesome tool. I hope you get a logo on a metal stamp someday and stamp your work because it all deserves it!
Thanks Everrett, I normally stamp the year into things I make, I’ve never thought about a logo stamp, that’s not a bad idea
@@MattysWorkshop It does. A simple MW stamped out with an over/under inverted W?
I have collected home made tools and the common markings on large and smaller tools was to mill a small slot and stamp name or intials in below surface. Have large fly cutters like that and some other pieces.
Great job! Love seeing those chips flying up close.
gday matty you will have to change from matty's workshop to matty's toolmaking every time you make a new tool
your level of workman ship gets better and better each time keep going out of your comfort zone mate
looking forward to the next surprise video cheers
Gday Wayne, thanks for the kind words, the toolbox is starting to get a little full and im starting to think I need a bigger one lol, im still working out what to make next but hopefully it won't be to long away....

G'day Matty your like me I'm still teaching myself as I have never done any machine work before but it was always something I wanted to do, and I always wanted to build a steam engine so I bit the bullet and started what your doing is terrific and I know the feeling when your plans come together. Good video this one stay healthy John

That’s a Great looking Boring Head. I wish I knew how to do that. Still just starting out on the long never ending Learning Curve. Thanks for Posting. I really learn a lot from you and all the other Great Machinist nice enough to post these how to Videos.
Gday, this was a great build and I also learnt a lot, this is really a great hobby and the more you do the better you get, there’s is so much to learn from all the CZcams creators out there and if your not sure about something you just have to ask the question, i really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, May I say ,I think what you have done is nothing short of "Genious" I wish I could be that good, well done mate , keep em comin. Kind Regards Mike
Gday, mate if I can do it then any body will be able to get the same results, just take the time to work out each step and take your time, it worked for me...
Very nice job. Your skills and attention to detail is impressive. Looking forward to see more of your tool making.

Congratulations on making such an awesome product Matty. It came out looking fantastic. I loved the notching on the dial you did too 👍. Cheers mate, Aaron. PS: I found you on Instagram today.
Gday Aaron, thanks for the kind words, its really nice to see the end result and know that you made it all from scratch, the dial turned out a lot better then I was expecting, I haven't been on instagram very long and its all a bit new to me but im slowly working it out mate....
Wow, Toolmaking is fast becoming your forte. Beautiful work Matty.
Gday Kevin, still a lot to learn yet mate but im really enjoying the challenges ...

Great video and great boring head, you have skills and patience Matty! You need your own stamp on these amazing tools mate. cheers
Gday Mick, thanks for the kind words, I’ve been looking at metal etching, this might be a good way of putting a logo on tooling, thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Excellent result. Have many more happy“boring” moments!
The Boring head is still working great, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Awesome work... Man that's just pure talent. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks, not sure about the talent bit though mate
Well done Matty, it looks better than a purchased one, I bet it performs better as well.
Gday, thanks very much, it does preform really well and was fun to build, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Damn man you are going to be a machinist yet,lol great job. Amazing...
Great addition to your workshop Matty. Really good job done on the boring head.
Thanks very much Tom, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers
I enjoyed that! Getting out of your comfort zone has good results! Emma's THC is a realy good way to get to meet people on the web!!
Gday Matthew, this build really taught me heaps, I really didn’t think I could make a boring head, I have meet so many great people with CZcams, it is a fantastic community to be apart of, we all have the same interests and to be able to learn from each other is priceless,
Nice thank for sharing
Sweet tool, looks great. We will see how she cuts. You can make cuts inward with it also. flip the boring bar and run the mill backwards. Thanks for sharing.
Gday Sam, thats a great idea, might have to give that a go one day, thanks...
Comfort zone? Looks like you've well and truly bust that old myth. Well done, Matty!
Gday Russell, thanks mate, I really happy I did step out of the comfort zone, I learnt heaps....
Very nice finishing to a great looking tool Matty, I like the method for indexing, it would suit me just fine as I would only use it occasionally and it requires no investment of cash (VIRequirement). Cheers mate and enjoy that boring head!
Thanks, it was the only way I could think to index the dial and the cheapest, if you take your time to make sure you line the pointer up with the graduations on the chart then it’s quite accurate, plenty good enough for what I do anyway....
Great job Matty. I have the Asian brother to that one. I have been wanting to make an indicator holder for the horizontal hole so I can dial it in dead nuts if i need to just a few thou .
GdayTerry, thats a really good idea to utilise to horizontal hole, I might have to pit some thought into that, ummmm
Impressive build Matty, serious toolroom skills.
Great vlog thanks for sharing.
Regards John.
Gday John, thanks for the kind words, much appreciated....
G’Day Matty, Bloody good work!!!!! That’s a difficult project and you should be proud of yourself. Well Done. Regards Dave
Gday, thank you, it was a big project that’s for sure, I learnt a lot and I’m really happy with the results.....
Matty this is a great build! I'm in need of a boring head and naturally I was searching CZcams to see who has made them to try and get some info for my build. I came across this video which gives a lot of information on how you built it. Like you this will be a bit out of my comfort zone, but that is how we learn... Thanks for making the video and for providing the great information.
Gday, when I built the boring head I was completely out of all comfort zones, i'd never machined a dovetail before and had no idea at all how to do it, I have trouble with maths so the way I come up with the numbers probably wasn't the correct way but it worked, at least in my head it worked🤣, I'm really happy the video is a help and just have a go mate and don't think its to hard, just make a start, i've used my boring head quite a bit now and it still works great, its a tool you'll have for a lifetime, Thanks for watching and commenting, also please let me know how you get on with your build, Cheers
Beautiful work and I don't have any complaints about the editing. That was very watchable and very enjoyable. I would love to be able to make tools of that quality! Looking forward to the ball turning attachment. Cheers, Craig
Gday Craig, there nothing wrong with what you make at all mate, thank you again for the help with the increment graph, that was a live saver, as for the ball turning attachment I still have a far bit of nutting out to do there but I think I can make something work...hopefully...
Well done Matty. Looks better than a bought one! Good luck in the comp.
Regards,
Preso
Thank you Mark
You knocked it out the park!! I hope I'll be able to make one one day!!
Gday, Mate if I can build a boring head anyone one can, i'm looking at making a 3" boring head at some time, Just take your time and you'll be right, Thanks for watching, cheers
Good on ya, great job
Thanks very much Keith...

Thank you
Your certainly coming on leaps and bounds Matty. Awesome machining and great editing. The fast forwards ok it stops the
content going stale. Your next project is a two off, one for you and one for me lol. Enjoyed, great result. Tony.
Too late Tony. I already asked him to make me a four inch one 😂
thanks for the kind words mate, Craig was quick off the make to get his order in but it would be quite a job to make a 4" boring head.....
@@MattysWorkshop 🙂
awesome build
Thanks very much Chuck...
Nice one mate. Liked your indexing setup. I think even I could manage that.
Thanks Mark, that was a very simple setup to do the indexing, it’s worked great, thanks very much for watching, cheers
Very nice job Matty
Great tool . You have come a long way , Cheers .
Gday Max, this was a great learning curve and im glad I had a go it....
@@MattysWorkshop Always push your limits with this type of work , only way to improve . After all , the worst thing we can do is make a pigs ass of it & have to start again !!!
Watching from Perth 👍 This is some real skill you have
Gday Dan, this build was the first time i'd ever done dovetails, it was a steep learning curve thats for sure, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Very nice job Matty, don’t know if I’d had the patient’s!
Thanks Tom, certainly took some patience to build but well worth it in the end
Very nice!
Thanks Mats.
Absolutely awesome Matty. This one would be a killer video for #roughcut2022 !! Bear in TX, USA.
Gday, It probably would, I got some stickers off to you today mate, Cheers
G’day Matty job well done, you nailed the precision work. Are you going to do a series on this build? I’d like to see it.
Cheers
Peter
Gday Peter, im not sure about a series of videos yet, ill just have to see what happens but im going to put together a short video of the setup I did for the dial and making some cuts with the boring head, thanks for the kind words mate
Matty, I am beholding to Kurtis for linking me up with your channel. I've never seen workmanship like you just completed short of L.S.Starrett's factory in the ole USof A. I watched a plant tour video going thru the entire factory in Mass. USA. They could take lessons from you. Well Done Matey!!!!
Gday Daniel, thank you very much for the kind words, I am a retired truck driver and self taught which proves that anyone can do this if they put the mind to it, cheers
O M G beautiful dude wow absolutely amazing 🏴🏴
Gday Andrew, the boring head turned out nice, i've been thinking of making a 3" boring head as well, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop well if you Matty I’ll for one will be looking out for that video I love all the engineering with the lathe I really enjoy what you took a piece of steel and turned it into that boring head absolutely amazing have a great day Matty 🏴🏴
Awesome video Matty great tool fit and finish look great good luck
super
Thanks very much Joseph.
Good jobs thank you
Thanks very much, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers
Great work Matty.
Thank you
Not much I can say Just amazing
Thanks mate, cheers
Nicely done!
Thank very much Joshua..
I'm really impressed with that Matty, I don't know about you upping your game, but you are up there with that mate! That's a tool room quality piece. The only issue was when you said about the adjustment screw they it had a little bit of slack but it would do. The adjustment screw is at the heart of the amount of precision you want to work to. If you are happy to go past your setting and come back to eliminate backlash then ok. But the more accurate you can make your male thread to the female the less backlash you will need to eliminate. Sure you can't get it down to zero, and some designs use a spring to try to do that but the least tolerance you can get between the male and female threads the better. But you have made a bloody good job of your first boring bar. I wish my work was as good.
Gday, I’m not all that worried about adjusting the boring head by the dial increments, I normally use a dial indicator to do the adjustments, I find I get a much better job, this was the hardest build I’d done when I built this, first time I’d ever machined a dovetail, great learning curve mate, thanks for watching mate, cheers
@@MattysWorkshop well as I said before you've made a bloody good job of it mate, even more so for a first attempt! Cheers from the UK and have a great Christmas and New Year to you and yours. Sam
I like your using a dwang for the tapping, a name for the tap wrench in Scotland.
Thanks very much, appreciate you watching, Cheers
Very nice job keep it up.
Thanks Peter
Good work, Matty!
Thanks very much mate, cheers
Great job, thanks for participating.
Gday Steve, thank you for the opportunity to enter this competition, very much appreciated...

You have the right attitude, if you don't push yourself you will never progress.👍
Gday Chris, certainly pushed the bounderies this time mate..
Hey matty that looks fantastic, puts the original one to shame, good on yer
Thanks very much, I was super happy with the end result, thanks for watching mate, cheers
