Wrong the Blue divisions were made from Spanish and Portuguese volunteers.
It's really interesting that Berger grew up on a country farm, got called up, won one of the highest honours that was possible to receive in Germany at the time and then, when released from Soviet captivity after the war, he just went back to his farm like absolutely nothing happened.
Some people are built different and then theres the ones who are doa as a personality
Look up Cincinnatus from ancient Rome - & yes, he's the same guy after whom Cincinnati, Ohio, is named.
I’m sure the entire time he left the farm he was thinking about it and was wishing he would make it back.
And when got the opportunity, he did just that lol.
Richard "Dick" Winters was like that, too!
He’s just built different man. Mfs back in that time were different
My great-grandfather and his brother were both recipients of the knights cross Generalleutnant der Heeres and honoury SS-Gruppenführer Ludwig Stamer and Fregattenkapitän Heinz Stamer. And when my father died I inherited all of there military items uniforms, awards, documents, photo albums, ect some how they were able to keep hold of what I estimate is 90% of all items. It has all remained in a dedicated room in display cases and other German WW1 & WW2 items that my father collected himself also. If only I could post photos here
Rudel was a one-man strategic factor.
...and the ONLY one to win/secure/earn all in Gold!
After he was shot down and killed in 1943, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was awarded a posthumous Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords by the Germans.
Reading Brian L Davies book to my Grandfather in the 1980's he was dismayed that German veterans could not wear their medals..his words..not mine..
"I find it disgraceful that a man cannot wear his medals particularly for bravery"
"A hero IS a hero no matter what nation he is"
And should be entitled to wear those medals
When I was a little 🇩🇪 my friend said shhh🤫 and pulled out a medal case hidden in a bookcase
It was his grandpa medals.
They absolutely did in the UK most are two old now but years ago many came to the UK to hold reunions. Often at the invitation of UK veterans.
In the West German army soldiers were allowed to wear the Iron Cross but without swastika.
They could, but they had to exchange the medal for one without a swastika, but oak leaves instead in the center. Many refused to wear them, though.
They could wear their medals but they were denatizified, meaning swastika taken off. Google former nazi in west German army and they’ll have them on their uniform. There was also an organization after the war for knights cross winners
As for foreigners, the first foreign SS man to win a knights cross was G Mooyman of the 23rd Niederlande (Netherlands) division, after destroying 23 russian tanks with a Pak 40 AT gun. Another was an obersturmbahnfuhrer Collani. Leon Degrelle of the Wallonian Sturmbrigade was another.
To expand on Mooyman, his first name was Gerard or Gerardus. He was 19 at the time and the engagement was during the battle of Mga near Ladoga in januari 1943.
The German Law of Titles, Orders and Honours regulates the wearing of Knight's Cross in post World War II Germany. German Law prohibits wearing a swastika, so on 26 July 1957 the West German government authorized replacement Knight's Crosses with an Oak Leaf Cluster in place of the swastika, similar to the Iron Cross of 1914, and the denazified Iron Cross of 1957, which could be worn by World War II recipients.

Hi simon, one suggestion I have is, if talking about Nazi Germany, not to use the modern flag but instead the third reich, black white red. As german I battle accusations of nazism everytime I come into an argument online, and talking about Nazi era and displaying the modern Germany flag, is just the wrong Vexillology. Thanks!
If I recall correctly, Rudel was also hired as a consultant by Fairchild for the development of the A-10 which led to a little upset in the US media when that came to light.
You are correct. The suggestion that Rudel died "a complete pariah" is nonsense.
What I'd like to add here was the several German commanders that recognised the gallantry of the British. The heavy cruiser admiral hipper was rammed by a destroyer HMS glowworm. Despite several crew dying on the hipper and hundreds of gallons of water taken on. Captain Heye still swung his ship around to rescue enemy survivors. Leaving himself open to attack. Even after all of this, he still found time to contact the British admiralty to recommend Gerard Roope of HMS glowworm for the victoria cross. The highest award for gallantry in the British empire. And he got it! Had it not been for Heye's report to the British admiralty, his exploits may very well have been forgotten. So credit where credits due to captain heye.
Hans ulrich rudel wrote a book titled stuka pilot, was a fascinating read
You left out the part that despite having his leg shot off late in the war Rudel continued to fly and destroy Russian tanks up to the end of the War.Great reading the book Stuka Pilot
For the US military, the Distinguished Service Cross (Army) and the Navy Cross (Navy and Marine Corps) are the second highest awards for valor. The Silver Star is the third highest award for valor.
I think the skip was for rhythm. He just mentioned the Victoria Cross and Military Cross and the video is about the Knight’s Cross. And if he went over each branch’s cross medal that would be a lot of crosses to say. Not to mention you still to do a lot to get a Silver Star.
He also forgot Bolivia. National Order of the Condor of the Andes, then National Order of Simon Bolivar. No European story is complete without Bolivia.
Just be an officer or senior nco
Can we all agree bravery is bravery. No matter what colour your wearing, what flag you fight under or what country you serve. Courage and valour are the only things left after chivalry, morals and humanity are dashed away by modern war.
Nah, this is the internet. Fuck all that
@@helljumper912HA!
6:40 I mean, after about 10 times being shot down but being able to get back in good enough shape to go back out again, other than a negative factor specific to that mission, I could see how it wouldn't seem so bad. Like, "eh, it worked out the last dozen times, so I think we're going to be ok."
7:48 a complete pariah..? The West German Airforce did a flyover at his funeral...
2:28 I think I have the metal part of the second to the left on the bottom row.
My buddy has one of those pretty blue Mutterkreuzen, top right..
Fascinating video Simon and company. This ranking and awarding of medals isn't as well documented by most documentarians and it gives us an inkling into how Hitler considered who received such an honor (and the qualifying factors that determined its level). It's important to learn about historical war symbology to help us identify hate group symbols (and their meaning) in our current era.
I remember playing with my grandfather's when I was a kid. My mom was German. I was born in Atlanta but visited when I was like 4 years old.
That Berger guy reminds me of my oldman!!! modest patriotic country boy!!!
The breakdown of the different tiers of crosses sounds like a rarity system in a live service game
Do one on the Soviet top medal winners during ww2 please.
"Stalin has little need for heroes" -Victor Reznov
@@duncasaur5074he was hero enough for everyone tho right? Lol
I read somewhere that at Rudels funeral German air force made a flyover of the cemetery.
This is interesting as they come up in company of heros (rts game) a unit of 3 knights cross holders
I would like to see you do a similar series for each of the participants in WW2.
We (America) used to hand out Medals of Honor out like candy. You participated in a military parade or funeral procession? You received a MOH!! Lol, thankfully we’ve since made the requirement(s) a tad bit more stringent.
The Navy Cross was a very big deal to the Americans too Simon, a bit more so than even the Silver Star was and the Silver was aa big deal too. It was a very combat medal for heroism. Any decoration that bestows on its recipient $$$/monthly for life like the MOH, Navy Cross and Silver Star was such a decoration. Just saying, The Rudel bit was massively understated. He was a superhero if ever there was one. People like him deserve our utmost respect no matter who they fought for. IMHO too much time was taken up with obligatory yet unnecessary NS bashing that this channel is so renowned for. That 's the only complaint I've ever had about this channel. Otherwise, it's history is very good.
It might be interesting to hear about women who were awarded the Iron Cross or any other nations bravery/service awards.
Night Witches
Erika playing as I zone out
Could you do another video for the Soviets and Japanese?
please put your cut outs in the end, like you used to do. they where hilariously funny.
No Erich Hartman?
Not gonna lie, the knights cross design is pretty sick.
Well yea, except for the you know… whole swastika thing
@@josecambronero9419 Did you know the same symbol like swastika is a symbol of peace in the east.
Leon Degrelle was another non German Ritterkreutz Traeger.
Thanks for sharing.
They're not winners, they are recipients. Awards for valor, no matter what country are not a contest.
Maybe I am mistaken, but wasn't Henry Ford also awarded the Knight's Cross?
Henry Ford didn’t receive the Knights Cross. Rather Ford was presented with the Grand Cross of the Supreme Order of the German Eagle on his 75th birthday. This was the highest honor Nazi Germany could give to any foreigner. Henry Ford was the first American recipient of this order.
@@wmschooley1234 James Mooney, General Motors' chief executive was awarded on 9 June 1938. Henry Ford was awarded on his 75th birthday, 30 July 1938
Kurt Knispel should have his Gold Cross upgraded to Diamonds and Gold Oak leaf Knight’s Cross.
Totally agree 🙂
What about the one with swords crossed on the iron cross?
You should have Done the Greatest fighter ace ever Erich Hartmann. "The Black Devil" was by far the Best fighter pilot ever!
The Knights Kross was introduced in the Napoleonic Wars and is still handed out
Did Rudel get the highest award during war-time services?!
Yes..the ONLY recipient of all the grades topping up with them in gold
One man could have earned the Knighr's Cross, but gave it up when he refused to shoot down a badly shot up yet still airworthy B-17 called Ye Olde Pub.
No Bullets Fly... love Sabaton. Learned more about history because of them.
At several points in this video, I said “oh hell ya!” Followed by “shit, I forgot he was a Nazi.”
But in reality fighting for a cause they believed in...May I remind you..Communism..
I am NOT far Right..but study this period..and I too joined the British Army during this period..now forgotten due to no conflict...BUT communism WAS the major threat..(Vietnam) and Russia in East Germany...something people forget..very easily
When I was young they were just called Germans. For some reason they are all called Nazi, every film and documentary? That being so the allies should be called communists or capitalists. The systems they are from
You should be able to compartmentalize what they were fighting for, and how they fought for it
@@katanabluejay ..and many saw and thought it..
Rudel was Germany's main character holy fuck
what about heinz beanz?what did he get?
I feel like hienz Paul Adolf would be like naming your kid John Bob Henry in America.
2 WW2 VIDEOS!!!!!!! FROM SIMON?!!?!?! IN ONE DAY?????? ONE GERMANY?????? WHAT IS HE SMOKING OR IS IT 'AYAWUSCA'. BLOODY OUTSTANDING MATE!
Didn't Henry Ford get one?

I like the farmboy story the most.
Love Karl and all but was sad to see you weren't on top tenz 😓
Blame the ownership
I have a Knights Cross my dad had it pinned on his motorcycle vest when he died. I don't like it. It stays packed up.
Good and bad are only a matter of perspective serving with honor and risking your life for another is not
Come with me, Stransky and I'll show you where the Iron Crosses grow.
I assembled and helped write a Navy Cross package for the most heroic action I have ever heard of, real out of the world stuff, and more heroic than any movie scene. Comment from HQ was that they would have recommended the Medal of Honor if he had only gotten injured.
And now the avalanche of "Medals are not won, Simon!" comment. I declare the floodgates open :)
Earned..perhaps..but this is the weirdness of the Riiterkreuez..or Knights Cross..in its validity...look at The Battle of Britain pilots..you hear of pilots winning the DFC that the Distinguished Flying Cross..etc etc..but what about the majority..the Flight Sergeants..that (Only earned a MM..Military Medal) equal to..a Military Cross..?
Look..I am not knocking the medal system..or the class system..but..on reflection...even my late Grandfather..who was captured by 90th Light at Alemein stated..the Knights Cross is a simple award..even Gunter Halm got ALL 3 (iron cross 2nd, 1st THEN..Knights Cross) for his actions at Ruweiseit Ridge against 3 RTR
In the British military..one has DSO ((Distinguished Service Order) and a plethora of orders not including (formerly) other Ranks..
But the Knights Cross was unique..forget Nazi symbols..
It was like the Pour le Merit
Hung around the neck..like a symbol of trust, loyalty and true bullishness..and it showed..because it was around his neck..like a collar..a symbol of the fact HE had done GREAT feats
Winner's...... Like a Race....? Ready..set. Go. ?
I don't see a paradox in non-Germans being given the Knights Cross from a racism perspective. All the recipients were Caucasian; non-Jewish, non-black, non-Gypsy, etc.
It was an informative and interesting historical coverage video about Nazism heroes
These days American troops seem to get medals for tieing shoe laces.
True!! My Dad used to say they got a Purple Heart for cutting themselves shaving!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I thought there was a double agent working for England that received one.
Hearing a British dude say "lew-ten-ant" just trips me out dawg. Where's that random unseen F at???
Herr Gott! Schick Rudel!
It's awkward because although they lost horrifically, the Germans had a few generals who could be considered some of the most effective and intelligent military commanders in history.
We just can't be biased politically in our assessment of military achievement. Not even sure we can dock points for doping in this sort of a contest. Because the Nazis were really into that.
6:35 to fight for his imperialist cause just like the British when they were invading to make the British empire
ESTONIAN SOLDIERS GOT NIGHTS CROSSES TOO !!!!
Ive got bogger sheds.
Not the first time I've said it but Hans Rudel was a good pilot but a horrible human.
We just gonna look past the D.S.C. Simon?

Someone has been searching Wikipedia
Well I might be weird but for me the first 2 that were given medals were the wrong way round. To me blowing yourself up to slow the enemy and give your men a chance is far, far more worthy than destroying loads of Tanks, etc and killing loads of people. Must sting though that in this case being awarded a medal is actually something that will make you more unpopular and disrespected rather than the usual response.

Americans don't give the top medals to foreigners or civilians. I don't think the British do either accept for the garter which is more about rank than merit.
I suppose anyone fighting in the Ameeican armed forces or.beitish armed forces wouldn't be a foreigner for long though.
Maybe the same principle applied in the last reich.
Rudel trank nur Sprudel ! In other words he was a teetotaller !
Mannerheim!!!!
As german it was somehow hard to cklick on this Video, still i love fact boi and need my dosis
Why? The Knight cross is not a Nazi invention, you should know that as a German
Earn it....or win it. ?
😊
Huuuu, the Rudel chepter was, kind of propaganda, Im "looking forward" to Wittmann...
There should be more quality controlle on the pictures as well, 12:16 is oviusly a 37 mil FLAK (a FLAK 37, since it is the picture from wiki) not a 37 mil. PAK (prosuibly PAK 36)
Knights Cross „ *winners* “ ???
i own one of those
But farming... Really? Man of your talents?
The best soldiers, man for man, of WW2.
Kinda jokes if Knight's Cross was mistakenly awarded to a Jew
Those Nazi guys were real jerks
Please Simon, for the love of god, if you talk about Germany 1937-1945, don't let your cutter use the black-red-gold flag, this not only false, i take quite a lot of insult by this. Nazi germany was not the BRD or Weimar Republic, they have different flags.
I wonder how much meth had to do with winning a cross.

NB "Hube" Does not rhyme with "Lube" - It's pronounced "Hoo-ber". ffs.
Where do you get the "r" from in your suggested pronunciation ffs?
Also complaining about Simon butchering words - especially foreign - is about the most pointless thing I can think of.
@@tubensalat1453 It's the English version of -er, not the American one...
believe hitler himself was awarded the knight's cross twice in WW 1 though it would have been much better if he'd actually been a physical coward as his name would have lost to history⚛😀
You lie
Only got the iron cross
Knights cross didn’t exist till ww2
I stand corrected. Got the iron cross confused with the knight's cross. My understanding is he was awarded the iron cross first class and also the iron cross second class. Is THAT right?@@JeffHenry-cq3is ⚛😀

Why don't you show some respect when you talk about these people? You have a very sarcastic way of talking.
Got a lot of nazi stuff lately. Sup with that?
The commentator speaks so fast that it's difficult to follow what he's saying. Pity because I am interested in such matters, but I just can't comprehend what he's saying. Take a deep breath and just slow down a little.
Stop with the racist editorializing. Germany had allied and fighting corps from EVERY race and most ethnicities. Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, Muslims, even black Africans.
Less woke, more facts, Simon
😂 The nazis are inclusive now? Woke nazis? STFU 🤡
Meanwhile the blacks in the USA where banned from white area's and the UK had invaded an occupied almost 90 nations of brown and black people.
There is nothing wrong with acknowledging the nazis ethnic and nationalist ideology. Pointing at black friends isn't a defense of the nazis race based ideology. And calling that woke is just embarrassing and sad.
They are famous for their inclusivity huh? 🤣 they're woke now
Based off how black Americans were treated during the great wars, I’m not sure that’s a good take.
More than likely the allied groups were cannon fodder and given C grade equipment.
