5 BEGINNER ways to use the trim ROUTER while reviewing the Makita Trim Router

- This week is all about gaining confidence with the Router and learning 5 ways to use the router in the workshop while reviewing the Makita Trim Router. In the video I unbox the Makita Trim Router kit and cover creating jointery, edge profiles, cutting circles, using the router to cut biscuits and using a flush trim bit to duplicate pieces.
The router is a super helpful tool in the workshop and will get used on almost every project you complete. My new favourite way to use the router is the biscuit cutter bit for cutting biscuits into the pieces to ease the stress of glue ups as the biscuits help everything align. I'm used to larger, corded routers czcams.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.
Finally , after watching so many videos for this router someone finally mentioned the size of the bit. Great tips..these is a great video. Love it

I use the plug in/wired version of the Makita Trim Router and i love it, i find that the dust collection on the wired version to be great, i just plug into my shop vac and away i go.
Here's a little tip in knowing which way to go with your Trim Router, get your work piece say a picture frame and you want to put a little round over on both the inside and outside, if you place your right hand fingers together next to the picture frame and touch it with your thumb, your fingers are pointing in the direction to go while your thumb is touching the edge of your frame, now looking at that direction your fingers are pointing at and it's anti-clockwise, now do the exact same thing with your right hand inside the frame, fingers together and thumb touching the edge and you see that your fingers are pointing in a clockwise direction, amazing and one way you won't forget which way to go.

Thanks Barry. This is a great tip and good to know for future. I think the dust collect is fine with it’s not a through cut. I found it not awesome if router bit is exposed at all.

When I want to cut circles I just fit the 16mm guide bush cut a 16mm hole in a piece of ply about 100mm wide and fix a pin like Ainsley and away you go

Great video again I bought the same kit about 18 months ago love it. I already had a large corded makita which I use on some occasions but the 18v is just so handy it gets a lot more use. Keep the videos coming always enjoyable. Steve tas.

Very nicely detailed video on the Router plus the examples of best usage of it Ainslee. Gotta say that sometimes corded tools are still needed but most people are using the battery powered tools & they make life easy 👍🇦🇺🍻

Thanks for the easy to follow tips. I’m planning a couple of beginner woodworking projects that would look better with a router to do some trim work, but I’ve never used one. I think I can tackle these projects with a bit more confidence.

Yep, those are the bushing screws, you can leave them off unless installing a bush. That router also has an arrow on it to remind you which way to push, very handy! I've been running that exact kit for nearly 3 years and it has never missed a beat. Such a weapon for such a small unit. You definitely want the 5AH batteries. The height adjustment on the regular base is not the best, the once you get used to it the control on the plunge base the adjuster gives you is 1/10mm accurate and super cool. Great video Ains... guess I'll delay my one for a few more months now! 🤣

Many thanks for this video guide. Having retired and wanting to learn to use and make whatever from wood, my family bought me a router. Have you ever had one of those moments when you look at something and think "WTF is this!!!" and then say "Oh thanks. Just what I wanted/needed" and not really knowing a thing about what's in your hands. Well, that was me.
I confess. I'd looked at other videos to get some basic and was completely bamboozled by their terminology and those presenters not taking into account the simple fact that not all people know what you're talking about BUT ........... having watched the first 6 minutes of you video, I was at peace with my new toy. Your presentation is clear, concise and well prepared beforehand and incredibly easy for the complete novice(like me) to follow and gain confidence. Thank you and I'll follow your videos and hope to gain more knowledge from them.

I have the corded version of the Makati trim router for a few years now ,love it.Dust collection is an issue… oh well the price of progress.
I fitted a long piece of hard wood to the fence to increase the accuracy .

Yes!! I’ve got the corded version of this router, have had it for almost a decade, and literally can’t seem to kill it. Over the years I’ve dropped it, thrown it across the shop in frustration (v bad day), once left it outside for a week, it was once on the floor in a submerged & flooded shop; it is absolutely indestructible.

I bought the RT0701c Makita router (cable) and I'm not looking back. :)
It's a nifty little tool (710 W) and comes with a tool for 6 mm shanks with an extra tool holder it even accepts 8 mm shanks.
For work that is much harder, I have an extra router with a 1,6 Kw motor that accepts 8-12 mm shanks.
Usually, I do it much as you show. Take all excessive material away with a saw and go the last 3-4 mm with the router.
Sawblades for the jigsaw is cheap...router bits cost $$$.

This was such a helpful tutorial. I’m one of those people you mentioned who are terrified of routers, even though I’m very comfortable with many other power tools (57 years in I still have all my fingers). I had a really cheap Black and Decker router for about 20 years that my Dad won in a golf tournament. Terrible tool. I just picked up a Makita router today and now I can’t wait to use it, with your advice.
Thank you. They can be scary but once you have a go and get use to it you will love it. They are such usefuly tools. The makita is a great router and isn't to loud which helps keep the scary levels down :)
Lots of great tips and tricks. Quick tip, using double sided tape when pattern cutting, that way it won't move when cutting. And the only problem I can see, is that it is the wrong colour. haha

Now to tap into your guidance and suggestions. Fun times ahead! Do you feel up to guidance on router bit brands? Being a weekend woodworker, I grabbed a couple of Ardens, saving a few $ over the CMTs that might better suit the professionals.
Hahah I thought the same thing when I was editing. 😀😀 glad there were some helpful tips. In terms of router bits I have been getting some from Amazon and they are working great. I reckon when starting out getting some cheaper ones to see what you use the most is a good idea. Then when you know what you use all the time getting better options of those router bits. Which dust extraction attachment were you using? I use the dust extraction on my plunge base when I carve signs and find it great.

If you don't have a planer or jointer just use a straight edge and a straight router bit to edge the boards.
Great video! Really informative. Bought the same router a while back but only getting round to using it now to round over the edges of a bench I'm making. Any advice on what speed setting I should use?
Awesome! I gotta be honestly I generally don't touch the speed setting from the highest setting. I'm sure there are times it would help to slow it down but I find having it on the top speed works for 99% of things. Hope this helps
