Yea Chael has a point but he's not entirely right IMO. You can throw a jab with a lot of power if you step into it like GSP not shifting your weight back before moving the front leg but instead loading the front leg and lifting it to make gravity yank your whole bodyweight forward as you throw. It's one of the first things Jack Dempsey writes about in his book

Let's be real, Gaethje is a lightweight who hits like a welterweight. His pace, chin, and heart all follow behind that.
When he's able to combine all his attributes and come out firing, I don't think there's another 155 who can stop him. Of course he has been stopped, *but this is a different Justin we are talking about. This is a smarter Justin who realized ONE power shot drops opponents a helluva lot quicker than 25 minutes of peppering shots.*
I feelike Justin Geathje needs to fight in Dagestan for 3 months, really learn combat sambo instead of BJJ and than he will be u stoppable.

I agree with Chael bc even Justin said before the fight that he sees cowboy who gets into a "sparring" pace and starts at that pace, and that he doesn't do that or doesn't lets other opponents get into their pace, and he does it by just going in with every calculated attack. So it makes perfect sense.

Jab is the most underrated tool in fighting! A good jab thrown from the waist is so unpredictable
Jabs are great for more than measuring. The jab is a great distraction to land a power punch when throwing combos. You can pop the head, then cross, or use it like Usman did when he knocked out Masvidal. Usman used it to pull Masvidal's guard down then hit him with the power punch.
And to Chael's point, I think I've only ever seen one knockdown do to a jab and that was from Josh Emmett recently.

Agreed. In boxing the jab is more important because it helps you set up other punches because the gloves are so big, it blocks your opponents view. With the smaller gloves in MMA, not so much, hardly really.

Trevor Whitman seems like a coach that won’t force his fighter to fight like how he wants them to fight. He will go through the path of least resistance and he will adapt a game plan to how his fighter thinks he should fight. I think as Justin started to lose he looked at his coach to adapt a style that he felt was more safe calculated and energy efficient. Can’t wait to see what’s next for Justin’s.

I stand to correct you great Chael, Alex Caceres broke his hand early in his last fight with Steven Peterson. Controlled the pace and won a decision just by utilising the jab. Very rare this sorta case happens in mma though.

@Liberty or Death Yep, because the floor is hard (concrete), people can gouge your eyes in close range, bite, 12 to 6 elbows, all kind of nasty things you can't do in a MMA fight. With that said, ground and pound and jiu jitsu in real life is probably effective too.
Gaethje seems to be pretty well coached. I would think he would try to mix in the wrestling during a 5 rounder to wear down his opponent if nothing else. Khabib may be too strong for him though as Gaethje is a fairly small 55er and doesn't cut much weight.
Gaethje does have serious snap in everything he throws. He turns his whole body with every strike especially on his hooks and leg kicks

A jab is also used to pause the opponent, so you can launch a ko punch or switch position.
High skilled guys get jabbed and will instantly use head movements to move out the way.
