What intrigues me, as someone from the global south… is how some Westerners will pour a billion into a complex, but not apex problem. And ironically not use that same money to solve a simple actual apex problem.
What do l mean? Here are two problems
    1. Identity in the wake of AI (complex, non-Apex problem).
    2. Lack of decent wages in the global south (simple, Apex problem).
Someone will ask me, how have you categorized the two problems? Well AI identity is a future issue…it’s not yet ubiquitous. Illegal migration from the global south to the west due to seeking perceived “greener pastures” IS a real current issue for both the global south and the west.
Ironically, these tech industries multinationals utilize a lot of raw materials from the global south… which they exploit the labor markets to extract it at the cheapest possible price… to bring these materials over to the west for value addition to solve a future problem of their own creation.
And we wonder why we are projecting a dystopian future? It’s a self fulfilling scenario, we are actively pursuing at breakneck speeds.
Well. Don’t mind me. I’m just a Afrikan from (what did Trump call it?)…a feculence cavity country.

From the whitepaper: ...inherent to biometric algorithms is the false acceptance of a user. The false acceptance rate is largely dependent upon the system's capacity to detect presentation attacks, which are attempts to deceive or spoof the verification process. While no biometric system is entirely impervious to such attacks, the important metric is the effort required for a successful attack. This consideration was fundamental to the conception of the Orb. Developing the Orb was a decision that did not come lightly. It represented a high-cost endeavor. However, from first principles, it was required to build the most inclusive yet secure verification of humanness and uniqueness. The Orb is designed to verify uniqueness with high accuracy, even in hostile contexts where the presence of malicious actors cannot be excluded. To accomplish this, the Orb is equipped with every viable camera sensor spanning the electromagnetic spectrum, complemented by suitable multispectral illumination. This enables the device to differentiate between fraudulent spoofing attempts and legitimate human interactions with a high degree of accuracy. The Orb is further equipped with a powerful computing unit to run several neural networks concurrently in real-time. These algorithms operate locally on the Orb to validate humaneness, while safeguarding user privacy. While no hardware system interacting with the physical world can achieve perfect security, the Orb is designed to set a high bar, particularly in defending against scalable attacks. The anti-fraud measures integrated into the Orb are refined constantly.

Should a private organization be allowed to have that level of data. Most forms of biometrics currently are on device and only governments collect and store your biometrics for longer term. This is a major deviation from that model. We don't know the security implications of this and could prove fatal.

I think the point they are trying to make here is that the company doesn't have that data. I don't fully understand it yet but it is akin to bitcoin etc, decentralised in some way.

They just told you that they will not keep the data of your irises. In fact, it never really gets stored, it only goes through the Ethereum decentralized chain (that is being held up by a few different computer devices across the globe by the PEOPLE) to verify that you're a human. Ethereum doesn't have an owner. It's a chain being held up by the people. Hope it makes sense.

"biometrics are key to proving personhood" yikes, I think we can foresee where all this may be heading. And we have to gall to criticize China for its state surveillance apparatus.
