    Raygun's performance at the Olympics *is the best win for boomers (and other generations that missed out on the breakdance scene) since colour tv. Making "dad" dance moves an actual Olympic game....*
    No longer they’ll remain silent when gatecrashing at a daughters party....
    from now on, the phrase "dad, you're embarrassing me" will be followed with: *_"I'm so good i could compete in the next Olympics!!!_*
    and it will be all heartbreakingly true. 🥺

    I'm not sure what you're bringing into this conversation. You're not coming at this from the angle of an athlete, coach or breaking enthusiast. You're not even "reacting" to her performance. You seem to be making general assumptions to push a generic "going out on a limb" vs "get yourself checked before you get wrecked". Honestly, I would've expected a deeper insight from a life coach angle that covers her journey and dilemma.
    She ends up winning the regional qualifier in a very weak field and finds herself at the Olympics against a field she had 0% chance of winning, because they are all younger, more athletic and have more competitive experience. It's fated that you're going to finish last place. How do you cope with that? That's something I would've been more interested in seeing perspective on from a life coach.
    As for "wisdom in the counsel of many": The "many" are not any more insightful just because they are more numerous. The "many" may have little actual insight into your choices. How "many" people could Raygun have looked to for advice that have been through exactly what she's been through, as someone making a debut at the Olympic Games in a sport making an appearance for the first time as a qualifier from the weakest region? How many know the rules and criteria of a breaking competition?
    As an athlete, her most important source of guidance is her coach. Now, in this case, given that her husband/coach is also rather eccentric in his breaking style, that might not have been the best advice in hindsight and maybe she should've gone with J-Attack's coach. Nonetheless, she made conscious choice with someone who knows her abilities best.
    The advice would be to identify who _can_ give the right counsel and weigh them more than the opinions of laypeople.

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment. At the end of the day, we win some and we lose some. The best we can do is learn from our experiences and grow. In this case, a person went from Olympic athlete to meme overnight. There's a lot that can be extracted, but getting feedback when stepping out a limb was the first that came to mind.

      A life coach works people to help them get from where they are to where they want to be. Lots of people use them to help set and reach goals, get unstuck, or get clear about what they want.

    While I agree that she didn't serve the team, I would also like to submit that the team didn't serve her. Someone who supposedly knew what the competition was about put her on that team. It's not the same as American Idol. She was chosen for the team. Maybe they didn't have any good break dancers. I don't know but it's certainly not all on her.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei Před 25 dny

      She wasn't chosen for the team. The qualifiers are open-entry, not selected, so whoever wins a qualifying event goes to the Olympics. There are no Oceania teams, just individuals who made the the effort to go. Raygun was one of 13 Australians and 2 New Zealanders, and won the qualifying event out of a pool of beginners and equal-level. Oceania is a very weak competitive breaking region, whereas the talent is in Europe and Japan. The Morocco breaking team didn't do much better. Both of them lost all their preliminary rounds, with their B-Girl Elmamouny matching Australia's B-Boy J-Attack with only 2 total votes and straight losses.
      That's what happens when the two weakest regions have their own qualifiers. South America is so weak that they didn't have their own qualifier and competed in the Pan-Americans with NA. You made it through. You don't go in expecting to be the underdog winner. You go in and do the best you can and accept that you've gone further than anyone else from your country, which should be seen as a victory. That's the life coaching lesson I thought Lee would share, rather than insinuating that Rachael's friends should've told her not to go.

      @@NUSensei true but she won a qualifier that other breakers in Australia said they knew nothing about until it was over. That's a failure of their Olympic committee and that raises real concerns. Australia has a flawless procedure for all other sports, but breaking they left adrift to do their own thing.
