The design process, selecting a gunsmith to build the prototype, how the design evolves as the prototype comes together, the acid test of putting the prototype into a performance/pressure testing regime, lessons learned, locate a pro comp shooter to run it in a competition, more lessons learned, final engineering revisions, final production of a small lot hold a competition and with the first prod unit as the top prize, raffle off or sell the remainder form the small lot.

The mag not dropping free is most likely due to a cheap grip module. When injection molding grip modules like that, there is a shrink rate that happens when the polymer cools that has to be accounted for when creating and sizing the molds. If they don’t get the shrink rate right when creating the molds, you get slightly undersized grip modules.

    • @Death.Co.
      @Death.Co. Před 9 měsíci +2

I worked in the quality lab of a plastic injection molding plant and I can tell you that for something like that plastic grip module to be of consistent quality there would have to be a "magazine shaped " fixture to slide into the grip while it is cooling, even if it had coolant running through the mold before it was ejected from the machine.

This gun will fall from grace as time goes on, like the Luago Alien. I can go to Hayes Custom and build a killer 2011 for $4000 to whatever price I want. Excellent review and commentary. Wonder how TTI will respond, if at all. I have never been into the Glam gun craze with colored parts, wild slide cuts, and all the other BS that draws your eye. I guess for the movies it makes sense but IMHO if the customization is not purely functional in a positive sense, then there is no practical operational value.
I fully agree on your final assessment, save yer bucks and buy a Nighthawk Custom. I bought a NH T3 many years ago and it is hands down the finest 1911 I have ever fired. The trigger is sublime in operation and the fit and finish of the weapon is impeccable.

An emotional response but not a legitimate one. There are many firearms worth many hundreds of thousands of Dollars. Some Millions. Fine Purdy and Holland and Holland Double Rifles for instance made for Royalty and are the envy or any collector of fine guns and art.
If you own one of many of these fine firearms', you can command an extravagant amount and have huge profit. As will the buyer in just a few years. Same with very high end Custom Knives. For the most collectable of them, the return is much higher than just about any investment you could possibly make and be guaranteed a very Health proffit.
Are these worth it in you mind. Nope. Are they worth it financially, H*ll Yes!
(Is a vintage rolex worth than a brand spanking new Timex). If and only if you understand the market value and money.
What sucks in this instance is the inflated price due to the item being a movie fan must have. is it well made, Nope. Desirable to the movie buff, yep in many cases. There are movie props sold every day at high end auctions that bring huge amounts of money. All due to provenance. It is what it is. In this case, it is only a copy of a prop, but apparently authorised. Not something I would spend , money on, but whether it is of superb quality matters not in the least to this type of collector. Only the Movie and hype it generates sets the market.

I have worked on one of Tarans sand vipers. Pretty sure optimum manufacturing is making his slides. There is little to no hand fitting and you can really tell from the extractor fit along with the beaver tail engagement, slide to frame, and the sear springs are stock very little polishing or relieving and same with sear. The issue you had is hammer following into the halfcock. This is likely from how the after travel on the trigger itself was setup which can very from Mags believe it or not. It should be adjusted with a mag in the gun.

It is a little strange TTI doesn't tell you who makes the pistols. You would think that would be a selling point they would want to brag about. The fact that some one won a shooting competition with it really doesn't do much for me. World class competitors can probably kick ass with a Glock 34 too. Also, I really appreciate how you went into detail on what you saw wrong with the pistol. That grip fitment looks like it would hurt my hands after a shooting session. And I have calloused up farmer's hands.

Caniks whole claim to fame in competition circles is that they bought some great shooters for their team and they were able to win with a Canik.
Buy a Canik and training ammo for the remaining like $6000+ and you too might win a competition.

@@Dentlessthey did that once and might have made those, but the majority of them are made by someone else. Unfortunately I don’t know who as I didn’t know them when it was told to me or I might have remembered. Hell Staccato (at the time, STI) only made the first batch or so of the Combat Master. Eventually the rest of those were made elsewhere also.

Before I finish watching this video I'm going to put my best guess in. I was surprisingly looking for information on who makes the TTI guns less than the week ago, and found nothing. I've held a few TTI pistols in my local gun store, including the sand viper, and I can't dismiss the fact that they are eerily reminiscent of staccato 2011s.

Yep, I just picked up a Staccato C-2 as the Les Baer was getting a little heavy. LOL! Only complaint on the C-2 is the drop in fire control group. No excuse for the hammer hooks and sear nose not to be properly dressed. The hammer hooks still had all the DLC finish on them. I feel a little scammed. OK, more than a little scammed. I called customer service and was told they were hand fit. Seems he didn't know the difference between dropped in by hand, (Not a robot) and actual hand fitting. Pitiful!

Great and honest review! I had read on one of the forums that Taran had bought an old patent/design from STI to make the Pit/Sand Vipers (my guess the DVC-P) This was supposedly from a friend of someone currently employed at TTI. Since STI is no more and became Staccato, I would not be surprised if Staccato is supplying the comped barrel, slide and frame to Taran and he has his gunsmith machine all the fancy slide work and drop in a bunch of internals from the top tier brands. That’s my take at least

This is just my 2 cents. When it comes to double-stack 1911 or 2011 style pistols, I start with ones from Wilson Combat (even though they are proprietary not conforming exactly to the definations of double-stack 1911 or 2011) and ones from Staccato. I ignore the various low-end ones, may or may not be interested in the various other mid-range to high-end ones later on. When I eventually reach the stage for the high-end ones, I would start with Nighthawk Custom and end with Infinity Firearms.

Was the fiber optic melted in place? I got a Wilson and in their manual it said they are shipped not melted in, and to put the color you want in and then hit it with a lighter. I put maybe 500 rounds through it before noticing that and the fiber optic stayed in, but maybe that could be a similar situation? Regardless, interesting review! A lot of early reviews were John wick hype so it’s nice to see a follow-up after initial release.

Whole lot of people harp on “tolerance” yet don’t understand that “tolerances” are called out on ALL mechanical drawings.
Quality control exists to ensure the machines parts are made within those tolerances.
A real problem exists if parts for a gun are being made with prints that don’t call out tolerances.
