Although you can make some money in the Netherlands, you only have to spend most of it within the country due to the high cost of living especially the rent, bills, etc. When you go back to your country, you do not have enough savings. You just became part of a big machine.

Yeah, the salaries are not so high as in the US, and taxes are huge, but if Uber stocks go up I will be able to save significant amount of money. Also I’m trying to build additional sources of income like CZcams.
Anyway, I don’t have much choice, cause I’m from Russia, and there is no way I’m going back there.
@@SmartDevFoundation yeah i suggest you always have something to work on the side and also take care of your mental health. the biggest take away really in working in the netherlands coming from a different country is the experience really.

True! I was delaying my well-being for a long time, waiting for a “better” time and place to start thinking about it. Even after getting an offer from Uber and moving to Amsterdam, which was a huge step forward in my life and career, I was considering it as an intermediate step on my way to the US. But then I realized, that I should start thinking about myself right now, otherwise the “better” time will never happen. And I believe that the Netherlands is the great place for it 👌

cool video, I also want to move to Amsterdam in few years and work as a developer. How long are u living in Amsterdam and how much experience do you have as a developer, was it hard to get a job there?

I’ve been living in Amsterdam for almost one year, moved here at the end of June 2023. I have 10+ years of experience as an iOS developer. I was not targeting a concrete location when searching for a job; it was more company-related. As I can see, there are many big companies here hiring, but besides, the IT market is not so huge here. And the salary differs a lot between the top companies and the others. So, I would recommend you target only top companies and spend some time preparing for big tech interviews. Otherwise, your entire salary will be spent just on taxes, rent, and food 🥲
@@SmartDevFoundation yeah got you, I'm focused on Frontend right now, working with ReactJS and TypeScript, do you maybe have advice on how to stand out as an applicant and what kind of projects would be really good to show off my skills so I have best chances of getting companies interested in me?
If we talk about top companies, it's more important how you write your resume rather than what projects you worked on 🙂
Also, try to get a referral to apply through the internal system, which will increase your chances (you can use LinkedIn for it).
And, of course, you need to spend at least a few months on solid preparation for big tech interviews (check my first videos on this channel for more context).
@@SmartDevFoundation thank you I will, but I think your projects play a big part in candidate selection, without them my resume would'd stand out as much. The biggest issue is I don't have work experience as a developer but I've been learning frontend development for a bit more than 2 years, I went to 2 coding bootcamps (both were free, I was selected for 1 because my coding skills were fitting for it) and I push myself to learn new things and build more complex stuff all the time. I understand that resume is very important but in my situation the projects also play a huge part because lack of experience so I have to show off my knowledge somehow :)
In your case, I will recommend you find any job as a developer as soon as possible to get real work experience.

It's 100% depends on your team and the company. Usually, a lot of strict deadlines from management, without consultation with a team about the time required to develop a specific feature, is a red flag. A “software engineer” is just another word for a developer/programmer, so yes, you can do it as a freelancer for sure.
@@SmartDevFoundation Thanks, are you working in a team, is it stressful (Looking at your video it looks like a peaceful lifestyle) and is it for someone like me ( I come from a law study) easy to switch career and start over again?
At Uber, I work at the Platform team, and we focus more on long-term fundamental projects, that will affect the whole company. So I don't have short-term strict deadlines and much stress about it. I believe that everyone can learn programming, it's not rocket science. I’ve also know a lot of examples of such switches, so it's 100% possible. And you even don't need a full university education for this, you can pass 6-12 month courses. Min salary as a software engineer to live decently in Amsterdam ?

It’s hard to earn a lot here, even with a software engineer salary. Amsterdam is a costly city, and you will pay €2k+ just for rent. And the taxes in the Netherlands are very high, so even if you start earning more - you will spend most of it on taxes. For everything above €73k per year, you will pay 52% taxes 😬
@ashasoyan In nutshell, Amsterdam is nothing more than a beautiful trap.
It’s all about your goals and priorities. If you want to have a great work/life balance and be protected by law (it's very hard to fire someone here), live in a modern clean and safe city with a lot of green around - Amsterdam is great. But yeah it's not about money and fast career growth.
