Amazing what people can do on a c64. The games look really fun to play and graphics are even better now.
Spectrum homebrew cheats the colour limits - check out Gandalf and Manic Pietro (after understanding how the colour restrictions work lol)
Thank you for including me in the voting pool, Louie... That being said, I demand a recount! Lester is SOOOO good. However, A Pig Quest is one heck of a game as well. Congratulations to Mr. Savona and the Piggy 18 Team.
Looking forward to 2024!
Hey Adam, I think I would have got cancelled from the internet if APQ did not end up winning. But you and I are on the same page....Lester for ever baby...LOL!
I am very pleased with the 2nd place for LESTER! For me, it is the best game of the year for several reasons... "A Pig Quest" is indeed more beautiful and monumental, but in terms of gameplay, it is much more challenging for me. Congratulations on making it to the top 10! Happy New Year!
TY for the content. All of this year's games are good and many are great. Hard to believe all this good content is still being made for our C64 now that it is 41 years old.
*41 years young ;)
Congrats to A Pig Quest Team. Well deserved recognition from the players.
Podium! Thanks Louie for another year of news and thanks to all the voters. Congratulations to Piggy18 Team and to all the entries. I wish you a happy new year.
Been a great couple of years for C64 games including 2023. Congrats to team Savona!
Thank you all! It was great to see Ooze at number 7.
Lol when you compare SNK vs Capcom to the Street Fighter II port that came out back in the day it's unreal to see what this computer is truly capable of. Long may this continue!
Thank you for putting me in 3rd position. It's a great honor for me 😊
It is the voting panel’s pleasure. Very well deserved as you took your time to make sure it was the best it could be.
Thank you for your on going game development which no doubt would be very time consuming. I always wonder what the motivation is for modern day c64 game publishers
Sorry I didn't participate in the voting this year man, I only played 3 out of the nominated games and I felt it wouldn't have been fair of me to quickly check the rest out and play them briefly. I'm patiently waiting for the physical Pig Quest and I want my first experience with the game to be with the physical cart :)
AWESOME video as always.
I personally really really loved Lester, Zeta Wing 2 and the Ooze this year.
Thanks Ollie. I really appreciate your honesty about not playing as many games during 2023. Hopefully next year.
Top list, and the fact there's zero filler tells us there's lots more outside that top 10 that might be worth a look too.
Thanks!
I thought 2023 had the most depth of quality games in the modern era. Roll on 2024.
Thanks for organizing this award ceremony. A really nice batch of varied games and a well deserved no. 1 A+++ for effort.
The benchmark for me is still Eye of the beholder though there are some decent releases on the 64.
A Pig Quest - Great Game!
Louie, so happy you did the GC awards after all. I'm going to sorely miss your content, even this vid could've been a tad longer ... to have a little more of your no-nonsense commentary, upon each top tenner - and to hear your take on the honourable mentions. Of course, we need to appreciate what we have ... so thanks heartily, for your efforts
Thank you again for your huge support. I only decided to run the Award this year on Christmas Day, so I am grateful that I was able to once again to get a good turn out of voters that I could reach out to and turn everything around within 4 days. Admittedly, I did edit down the video and removed the missing features that you refer to...viewing data shows that most people prefer to just cycle through the countdown and miss out on all my witty and clever comments :)

Amazing games this year! Thanks for the great content. This award should be renamed though as your selected panel of judges are mostly content creators and not representative of retro gamers at large.
Sadly, it may be the last rendition of the award ... as Louie's going to re-assess in 2024 whether to continue
Thanks for watching and putting forward your valid point around the naming.
I had thought about renaming when I shifted the Award away from being open voting. But I decided to stick with the name as I make sure that the people voting actually play most new releases, are passionate about the current scene and represent a good spread across UK, mainland Europe, North America and Australia.
In the end, they are all gamers and the award is not based on one person's opinion. But yes, I do appreciate there are so many more people across the community who play games and I would love to be able to have 100+ people in the panel but last time I made a public call out for people to register their interest to vote...I got nil response :(
Let me know if you would fall into the 'gamer' category and would be interested in participating next year (if I run one). Cheers
Oink!
Deathflood could've been a masterpiece, if not for the slowness. Was it written in basic - if so, an assembler rewrite is in order. Or perhaps port it to an 8-bit platform with a faster cpu, such as mega 65
For a debut game it’s impressive
If it was written in Basic it would run at about 0.2 FPS. I suspect the speed is just a design decision, the speed on ladders is probably limited by how fast they can scroll the screen, but horizontally there are no limiting factors.
@@arlasoft Sluggish performance is rarely a coveted "design decision" ... even if it's been written in assembler, it's apparently been done so poorly and inefficiently
