@@blacknwhitecookie8967 thank you!
The Girl Next Door was extremely tough
The Girl Next Door is made worse when you know it is based on a true story.
@@joshroberts5661 I have no doubt! Though I know it’s based on a true story and I’ve heard many horrible stories whenever I do PTSD/trauma advocacy work, so I am not surprised anymore, just hugely disappointed and sad.
I’m so glad you talked about how it’s somewhat easier to read dark/hard stuff in books vs seeing them in a film. It’s the whole reason I can’t watch GOT, the books were hard enough!
@@thegrinch0614 absolutely 💯
I think "stream of consciousness" is the phrase you were looking for when talking about passages without punctuation.
@@Afoxintheforest possibly!
Great list! I've only read we have always lived in the castle, which I loved, and I think I preferred to Haunting of Hill House.
A lot of the others have been on my TBR list for what seems like forever at this point.
At least youu have them tucked away on your list 👏🏻
Wow, this list of disturbing horror novels is truly chilling!
We Have Always Lived in the Castle is my favorite Shirley Jackson book. Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist are in my top books of all time. Father Karras is one of my favorite literary characters. I had fun with Maeve Fly. I need to revisit The Only Good Indians. I DNF it but then absolutely LOVED My Heart is a Chainsaw and Don'r Fear the Reaper. I may go back to TOGI after I finish The Angel of Indian Lake. I'll check out the other books you mentioned. Great video!
Shirley Jackson is fantastic
@@seeingmine absolutely true!
Psycho by Robert Bloch is another great one.
Still haven't in my opinion seen a good "Weir Wolf" .....horror since 90's ......😶🌫️ (weir wolf emoji)
I’m not too much into werewolves because people way overdo it for me.
Try some Grady Hendrix-- _The Final Girl Support Group__ and _The Southern Book Club's Guide to Vampire Slaying__.
I read How To Sell A Haunted House and it was just okay.
@@NicolesBookishNook I started that one, and it seemed kind of cliched. The earlier work is more impressive.
@@NancyLebovitz yeah, puppets aren’t creepy at all to me, so I did not feel much from it 😂
@@NicolesBookishNook I didn't get that far, I'd just seen the horrible brother in other novels.
Nothing by Richard Matheson made the list? Try I Am Legend, Duel, Stir of Echos, Hell House to name just a few.
@@Fred_Jones563 I’ve never heard of him before, so not on the list.
@@NicolesBookishNookMatheson wrote many of the original Twilight Zone TV series episodes. I Am Legend has been adapted three times into films (Vincent Price starred in the first version, Charelton Hesston was in the version made in the 70's and Will Smith was in the most recent remake).
@@mikeshaffer4912 ah yeah, I was never into those shows or movies.
Great list! I've read most of these and love them ❤
I really need to read Maeve Fly though 😮
I really think Rosemary's Baby gets down played with how disturbing it is.
We are twinning! I highly suggest Maeve Fly ASAP. Rosemary’s Baby messed me up 😂
I read all of these except for Sundown Motel, I suppose I should give that one a read.
Absolutely 💯 😎
Dead Inside will always be my favorite 🤩
YESSS!
I appreciate the video but all of these are hard passes for me 🤣
Oh, no doubt 😆
i have dead inside on my tbr waiting to be in the rights head space. for it thought
Ahh yes, you definitely need to be careful with that one 😬
I haven’t read 3 out of 10. Along the Path of Torment, Guts, and The Sun Down Motel.
I agree that American Psycho was poorly written. All the references to brand name clothes annoyed me.
You’re almost there to getting all 10 😎
And thankfully someone else agrees American Psycho wasn’t well-written other than me 😂
lol that's exactly the point though. It's a satire of vapid 1980s culture, that's why there's interludes where he just talks about Genesis and whatnot.
@@mgsPWlover yep, I know all that. And it still wasn’t done well in my opinion.
I have heard some very interesting things about Dead Inside,, babies...sounds hysterical!🤣 I loved We Have Always Lived In The Castle, but in my opinion it is not a disturbing book. Ok, maybe on a psychological level, agreed. I still need to read Maeve Fly. American Psycho was just an ok book in my opinion, but what he does to those women in the end really messed me up! I need to read more Jack Ketchum. Guts is bloody disgusting, but laugh out loud funny, if you have a black heart like me. 🖤
“Disturbing” depends on the person, as everything is subjective.
I am a volunteer mental health advocate and I have 6 mental illnesses, so I find those who are without help for their illnesses and allowed to roam to be highly disturbing.
@@NicolesBookishNook I hear you Nicole! I am bi-polar and am on anti-depressants. I did not mean to offend. As I did state, it is psychologically disturbing.
Number 11: my diary!!!
@@toweypat “keep it secret… keep it safe.” 😆
@@NicolesBookishNook Haha!
reading the title, all I can think of is ... Bukowski
I've read a lot of his poems and thought they were good, but nothing creepy or scary. I have not read his novels though. Always something for the future!
@@NicolesBookishNook reading some of his works gives you the feeling that you wouldn't want to be in the same room with the character ... a lot of low life scum
...what?
I like how you pick The Box instead of The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. Interesting choices for this video and some great books (as well as some I should give a read soon)
I haven’t read that book yet 😃
@@NicolesBookishNook it is not for the faint of heart
@@grimreads I have heard some things and it’s not something that would freak me out. I’ve read one too many crazy books but also, been through and seen horrible stuff. It’s hard to freak me out.
@@NicolesBookishNook @ me when you read it. My second time around was more grueling than the first
@@grimreadswill do! It’s going to be quite some time though 😂 too many books on my TBR already!
Why is no one talking about Edward Lee, Tim Miller, Kristopher Triana, Wrath James White, Wade H. Garrett, Matt Shaw books when it comes to disturbing hard core stuff? Because that's way too much nearly everyone can handle? Just read "The Summer I Died" and everything seems easy afterwards. haha
Because when I made this video, I either hadn't read any of those authors or I didn't like the books I did read by some of those authors 😉 I read Dead Inside and everything else is easy.
Totally agree that Kristopher Triana should be more talked about. Full Brutal and Toxic Love are by far the two most disturbing books I've ever read.
Cows by Matthew Stokoe
@@coolstuff6558 haven’t read it though many say it’s just nasty for being nasty, which is why I am not interested in it. Similar to Hogg.
@@NicolesBookishNook I haven't read it either, I've just heard about it
PS it generally only takes a month to starve to death in real life.
Depends on a few things but it'll take longer depending on your health before starvation begins, what you weigh, and how much caloric intake you are getting/being forced to take. One month isn't an end all, be all for starvation. 4-5 days without water is solid though. You are worse off not drinking water than not eating. You can go quite a long time without food, but it will absolutely suck, no doubt.
Read Woom? :) (by Duncan Ralston)
@@dennisklang yeah and I didn’t like it.
Guts lol
@@shadquirk607 gotta get gutty…
@@NicolesBookishNook I read it straight after Rant, which I found really disturbing, and thought that there was no way Chuck could top that but I was so wrong lol
@@shadquirk607 he can always beat himself in nastiness! Good for him though.
