- This video is the basis for the tutorial series. In this episode I show you around my set up, my workstation if you will. I like to have my things in a certain way which I show and I also show you how I work in Cubase 8. We look at the arrangement and mixer window. As I show you how I create things it is good to get a basic grasp of my set up so you can translate that to your own set up and understand and apply.

Junkie - Big respect for taking the time to make these videos. It's always good when a big Hollywood star like yourself takes the time to connect to the regular composers like us. Much appreciated.
Black Light Recordings yeah what he said
As a amatuer learner, I can't say how appreciated I am to see Junkie XL himself teaching in a tutorial.
I love the salt lamp! Seriously, this is like the most extensive and detailed making of a mainstream movie soundtrack ever done. Thanks for sharing your work. All the best
5 years later, I'm revisiting this tutorial for the great tips on creating Cubase Template layouts... STILL relevant to this day! I am so happy you have kept these videos up... Thank you!
For an artist as busy as you, to take time to make these tutorials shows what a great man you really are !! Thank you
"We're in the drum department at this point. We keep going, there are drums, more drums, more and more drums. Drums, drums. We keep going down, more drums. There's a lot of drums."
I love drums.
Amazing love this. Are all the vst instruments loaded into project? Does that not cause any CPU strain?
Thanks for all this Tom and your transparency in regards to custom and third party tools and developers. Incredibly useful for the community as a whole.
As much as your music oft-times underwhelms me, it's hard to doubt your passion, enthusiasm and giddy excitement for a craft which you obviously love. Thanks for this series Tom!
Ah man it's awesome that you're doing this! THANKS!
And I was thinking that my 150+ tracks for a full virtual orchestra were a bit too much.
You are so free with your information, big respect and heartfelt regards to you.
Holy crap I can't believe I didn't know about this! Thanks you for sharing your genius Tom :)
Junkie XL! Loving all you're doing!! Thank you so much for opening and sharing your professional insights (so rare). Learning a lot from you channel alone.
This guy knows his stuff ! I am going to learn a lot from him .
Thank you so much for uploading this series! Such an in-depth look behind the scenes is usually not accessible so easily, very interesting and helpful.
Hey Tom. Just watching this video again and have spotted a couple of my synth patches at about 12:25. Deeply awesome to knoiw they were in your template for Mad Max. It's a fine fine soundtrack.
Dude it would be cool as hell to see synth patches I made in a professional’s studio. You have every right to be proud my man!
oh man i just got ableton, a usb interface, novation impulse and some old bx5a;s lol.. might try those zen candles though.
same setup
Messoins Music
Lol right on. also got a nice new comfy chair with adjustable arms. I went all out
it's not what kind of gear you have, but what you make with it and what works best for your workflow.
Bartimaeeus
yes absolutely
I almost have the same setup man.Let me tell you,a friend of mine has probably less than that and he's a composer for Universal,he's written music for commercials and trailers for Top Gear and Game of Thrones, don't sweat it's really about talent and timing. And luck of course.
You seem like a really humble, kind and down to earth guy. Thanks for sharing
This is so awesome and so very cool that JunkieXL has taken the time to show his process. Well done!
Tom... Junkie XL, One of my favorite producers for the past 10 years. "Today" is still one of my favorite albums. And Fury Road is one of my favorite scores. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Just got Cubase 8 and this is incredibly helpful.
Great videos, thank you JXL. Those Zen lamps definitely work for you. I'm feeling Zenned up, and ready to go after having watched your videos
Many thanks for selflessly sharing your wisdom and experience!
Thanks so much for sharing these insights! I am very impressed by your clear setup and it helps me to sort my workspace. Great work! :D
Hey Tom, thanks for letting us know, how you work. Now I don´t feel as nerdy as before for doing the same things as you do on a smaller scale. ;-) Best, Marcel
Thank you for your for sharing the knowledge Tom! It's not usual to see famous artist doing in-depth tutorial like this :)
I learned more in these 15 minutes than the last ten years.
This is really neat - I like the conversational tone of the videos - like I'm just sitting there with you. Thank you for posting this series. I should make a video showing you what I've changed as a result of the series :)
Best,
HBTM
That is a really awesome setup! Love the way you have different computers linked
Thank you for such a detailed insight into you production process !!
Amazed by your set up. Thanks for sharing!
What a great studio. Can't wait to see the other episodes! :)
It's really great of you to take time to do these videos, thank you! It's very inspiring :)
Now that's a man who loves his job
second video i'm watching and looking forward to watching the rest already....highly apreciated :)
Thank you, Tom! Looking forward to learn new things music wise of course) )
Much gratitude for the detailed insight!
...we'll get to that later :-)
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for taking the time to do such infomative videos. I can't believe how well you speak English! I'd say you have a better grasp of the language than a lot of native speaking Americans! Wishing you continued success!
Interesting - thank you for your time & expertise.
Now I feel miserable for not knowing anything :D
i feel miserable for not being rich omg
AlphaMuscle He didn't start off with all this gear and money. It takes very hard work and dedication.
Gear Zen; He might have (always been wealthy), I don't know, but lots of people are - why assume he wasn't (unless you know). Regardless and more importantly though - he's definitely not arrogant about it.
I'd bet you know more than you think.. sometimes you can understand the creative but just have to learn the technique.... little by little buddy.. I think everyone's like that, it's what makes recording so satisfying and frustrating, I knew a guy who used to say "Ok you just learned how not to do it" whenever I fucked something up... wise man..
you are so amazing for doing all of these videos on your channel.. Im fan also, big thanks
Love the Lemur app. Just obtained it and as i saw it has a lot of programming inside it. Can't wait to use it. (A huge fun of yours). Cheers from Greece. Xx
As far as I know Tom never tells us a specific touchscreen app that will do the things his does. Mark W Roberts mentioned Metagrid for iOS in his comment: big thank you for that! I knew about Lemur but wasn't sure it could do all these things easily. It can! Search CZcams for "Lemur/Cubase Template Tutorial Video" and also "Controlling Cubase Track Visibility Using Lemur".
I also plan to look at Metagrid and any other good recommendations people have.
top kanaal man ! respect heb niet zo heel veel met je edm music maar vind het geweldig om te zijn dat je je kennis doorgeeft erg vet steek er veel van op egt heel erg bedankt
Love the videos and that you share so much visdom and inspiration. I just cant help but wonder how all this gear is connected up🤔😳
I LOVE YOU JXL! TYSM FOR MAKING THE VIDEOS :DD
Thanks for your knowledge and time.
Thank you for this video! All the best!
1:34 "Oh obviously I'm sitting in a chair. That's the most important thing."
this is a great series... I'm looking to do similar with Reason 9 & Cubase...
First step: forget about reason. Sorry for saying that.:D
I shall try to remember that whenever we should find ourselves working side-by-each in the future... - I have since replaced Cubase with 2 other options: Reaper & Harrison Mixbus - both work great with Reason 9 - as well as Sibelius 7.5 and Kontakt and Arturia and Waves... so far 0 dilemma or setbacks - to each his own they say.
Perfect thanks Tom!!!
I would love to hear another solo record. Loved Synthesized!
Great video Tom. It will be amazing if you can show us how cables are linked and all the connection (just an idea for ST season 4!)
Tom, I'm gonna be honest with you. Without your soundtrack, Mad Max Fury Road would have been an average film. Your work literally injected steroids into it, took it to another level. It is proof that composers really are the "second director."
Also true for 300 Rise of An Empire.
Hari Jeevakumar Nope. The music elevated Fury Road, no doubt, but so does any great soundtrack, like Star Wars for example. The steroids were already there that's thanks to the great George Miller who use real stunts on real location with fuel drived explosions plus the human element added to the chase that's lacking in Fast and furious and all the shit action movies with cardboard story and characters that's been a stamp of the last ten years of Holywood action cinema.
With 300 Rise of an empire I agree with you, It's just a generic action movie with cardboard characters and a good soundtrack. A CGI fuckfest if you will.
airixxxx thanks for your comment. It's an interesting opinion and perspective. I certainly agree with you after seeing the film again. To some extent. I still stand by that the soundtrack plays a MASSIVE role in film. Check out comicbookgirl's mad max fury road review and you'll understand what I mean!
Hari Jeevakumar Actually not really. Your admiration is... admirable, but as a scoring guy myself I can attest that--especially in a movie like this--the score should really not so much be noticed, but rather simply an accompaniment. Really, if you even think about it, there's a problem. Composers are sure as shit not "second directors", and believe me, the genius of the film was NOT in the soundtrack, although I'm not complaining about the soundtrack at all. It was what it needed to be.
+Hari Jeevakumar +Alexande Brown + airixxxx
Every part of a great movie makes a great movie. Some parts more than otherm, but still every part. If one part is missing, a movie that could've been great can be average or even terrible. For example the new Fantastic Four had 5 amazing super talented actors and an awesome talented directer, but the script sucked and production and execution sucked. So Mad Max wash't an amazing movie just because of the music or action or story telling, casting, acting, etc. is was great because every single piece of the puzzle came together to make a great movie.
+Alexander Brown This age old assumption that "if you think about it there's a problem" is not a very nuanced perspective on film scoring. Yes there are many moments in a film where the music should barely even be felt but there are other moments - in Fury Road especially - where the music takes on the aesthetic and even comedic values of the film and is very noticeable indeed. While I do agree it is almost 99% of the time the job for the composer to deliver the directors intention, the job is not to make the music ALWAYS in the background. I wouldn't be surprised to hear many composers - even Tom - disagree with me, but I am *REALLY* curious to hear his opinion none the less.
I love this videos! I noticed he mentioned CC16, but didn't say what he uses it for. Does he answer this in a later video? Does anyone know?
Great video and insight.
Very nice and inspiring !
Tom, great and helpful video! Will you ever do a tutorial with insight to your computer specs and what it takes to drive all these plugins & configurations? I have 5 grand to drop on a PC next year and need to know how to best invest. I already have all the libraries but any tips or advice on what to get as I dive into Cubase 9 would be great. Thanks and much respect!
Cubase is hands down by far the best DAW on many levels. But also Pro Tool sis brilliant for electronic music once you have the audio - so easy to manipulate and mixing in PT is superb.
Logic for the clear interface though, automation on the same track or nested. And the ease of dealing with multi output VSTi's. Just gone over to Cubase 9 pro - big changes for me - seems like cubase needs time spent on small details, not big things. But yes Pro Tools is still the best for what it was designed for: Audio, Audio and more Audio.
Thank you so much for those Videos!!!
Wonderful video. Very interested in how you use 6 servers and how you cooperated them together in cubase
Thanks Tom!! Really! Thank you...
Fascinating, thank you.
Great to see how you work, Tom! For the new tutorials, is it possible to hear the output from your DAW directly? Or is that hard because of surround / stereo compatibility?
Thanks for the video......Greetings from Sweden......
John Williams = 1 piece of paper and pen. Junkie XL = Full high tech kid stuff.
do i need to buy some salt lamps?
Felix Hopkins There are great! It helps you to concentrate and relax your mind.
Felix Hopkins feng Shui your studio for best sound results🕊✨
An equipment list would be amazing Thank you
You are the GOAT!!!
Thanks Junkie for this video! I was wondering: do you work with a master/slave computer setup?
Very Nice!
Glad to see You. Really proud, that's You are All Right.
Respect from fighting Ukraina
Great tutorial Tom! Could you explain how you have your Pro Tools computer slaved to your Cubase computer? Is it via ethernet LAN?
Perfect 🙏🙏
Literally a GOD
Tom, I was wondering about the 3 Faders on the JLCooper Fadermaster that you have assigned to Mic Positions. You say you have them set up for Close, Mid and Far and I'm guessing you have made every single library in your arsenal to be uniformed to use these 3 faders (providing the Libraries have 3 mic Positions). What I am wondering about is when you have (or make) libraries with many more Mic Positions, such as something from Spitfire, how do you control those positions as well? I own a JLCooper and recently got a Kenton Control Freak so I am trying to figure out the best thing to do regarding this. Thanks for all your videos. Been amazingly educational! Jono
Hey Junk, thank you so much for your videos, it's great to see how you work!
I have a question about your shortcuts (also from the mad max video) on your panel, specifically the 'show data at cursor'.
I'm assuming that you're using a project logical editor preset that checks which parts are under the cursor and hides the rest?
If so, doesn't that mess with your Visibillity list? I.e, if you've set up your session, and hidden a few tracks before, will this Macro/PLE not show or hide those also?
And just another one; if you've set up your groups & stems, how do you deal with FX channels that multiple groups send to?
For example, if I have 1 drum group and 1 string group, which both use a send to FX channel 1, how do you handle that with a batch channel export?
Sorry for the nerdiness in advance :P
Thanks for this video.
Could you, please, share information about the instruments panning? Do you follow some certain scheme or maybe use default panning of vst-plugins? I cannot find enough information about vst-orchestra panning.
great video
As an IT nerd (profession and hobby) I can't help but wonder who helped you setup all of this and just everything else that is computer related? Is it a guy who specialises in this? Just a general IT guy? Yourself? A company?
SmellMyKKPP I was wondering about the exact same thing. My guess would be that he probably develped some IT skills thrue the years but also has his people/company for his set up. I’d love it if Tom would tell us something about that.
Very well organized. How much RAM do u need 4 all that stuff ? I think not less than 64....
HI Junkie, could you kindly consider re-doing this article in 2021 with your current setup? CMC interfaces are gone, could not be found. Nor the touch screens, but I am still looking for one. I hope this is a good idea, and anyway, thank you for all your work and ideas!
THe JL Cooper editor software for the FaderMaster, I can only find for Mac, assuming you have no issue with your PC setup? If so Im buying
You make any mortal musician & producer feel small
How are all those physical inputs managed, and how can you work with multiple servers at the same time with a DAW? Or did I misunderstand? Sounds like he was saying 6 servers are handling the load.
:) This studio is so overpowered compared to my own abilities that it felt more like a museum visit. Very few things I can actually implement in my own poor studio :)
The keyboard looks like it’s military spec and could take a hand grenade blast and survive :)
Oh man he said we have more drums some more drums and really a lot of drum. I'm dead. And more drums
+1 for the mac keyboard. i tried many times and failed to replace it : )
lekker tom,
super laat maar bedankt voor dit!
Thanks! Have you ever used Digital Performer? You think Cubase is better for video game music? Trying to decide which to use.
how do you manage video with such huge project whenever i have huge midi projects my video freezes stop playing smoothly trying to figure out what exactly you all use to make it work but haven't got the right setup or specs or trick you use to work endlessly on the movie length video so smoothly kindly help me with that if possible. I use Cubase and video is always a pain when the project gets heavy. Thanks in advance Junkie. :)
Where is the tutorial on how to set up the second touch screen??? I have an asus slate pc that I would LOVE to use as a touch monitor.
Did You come ahead with your touch Screen? I find not a tutorial witch explained how Cubase is integrated. Did you?
Hi! There will be a tutorial for that. My name is Junkie XL. There will be a separate tutorial for that too!
Nice he has Boomstars!!
Hey Tom! I know im late to this video but I have a question. What do you mean when say that pro tools slaves to cubase pro?
Thanks
No wonder you get the big bucks. Peace Christo
What in your opinion are the top notch vst libraries with the best individual orchestral instruments?
How can i create this click track with groove agent??
