The GMC General (also known as the Chevrolet Bison) is a heavy-duty (Class 8) truck[1] that was assembled by the GMC Truck and Coach Division of General Motors. The largest conventional-cab truck ever produced by General Motors, the product line was introduced for 1977, replacing the C/M 90/9500 trucks. After 1981, the Chevrolet Bison was discontinued, following the withdrawal of Chevrolet heavy-truck production.
In 1986, General Motors entered a joint venture with Volvo to produce heavy trucks, leading GMC to end production of the General conventional and Astro cabover in 1987.[2] As of 2020 production, the 1987 GMC General and Brigadier are the final Class 8 conventional-cab trucks produced by General Motors.
The GMC General and Chevrolet Bison were assembled in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac East Assembly (alongside the Chevrolet Bruin and GMC/WhiteGMC Brigadier).
In 1966, GMC Truck and Coach introduced its first dedicated heavy-duty trucks, moving away from trucks adapted from the smaller C/K line. The division introduced two lines using a common cab, the H/J-Series (93-inch BBC) and the C/M-Series (112-inch BBC).[3] Using a longer hood, the C/M-series trucks were designed to accommodate larger diesel engines, such as the Cummins NH and Cummins V903, and the Detroit Diesel 8V71. The center-hinged "butterfly" hood of the H/J-series was replaced on the C/M by a front-hinged fiberglass hood.[3] Following the introduction of the medium-duty C/K in 1973, the 112-inch BBC truck was consolidated to the M-Series.[3]
During 1977 and 1978, GMC Truck and Coach further split its heavy-duty truck range. The Chevrolet M90/GMC M9500 were replaced by the Chevrolet Bison and GMC General in 1977, with the H/J range renamed the Chevrolet Bruin/GMC Brigadier in 1978.
Similar in layout to the Ford LTL-9000, International Harvester Transtar 4300, and Mack Super-Liner, the Chevrolet Bison and GMC General are Class 8 conventional trucks. Produced with an all-aluminum cab built by Budd, the trucks were available in many different combinations.[3] Two hood configurations were offered (108-inch or 116-inch BBC); along with a day cab, a 34-inch sleeper cab was offered, along with a walk-in sleeper cab (introduced in 1985).[3]
While no gasoline engines were available, several diesel powerplants were available, with the Detroit Diesel 6-71 (later replaced by the 6V92) as the standard engine. Alongside the 6-71, a buyer could choose the Cummins N-series, or Detroit Diesel 8V71 and 8V92.[3] Following its introduction in the GMC Astro, the Caterpillar 3406 was introduced in 1982.[3]
When introduced in 1977, the Bison/General were available from dealers as vehicle gliders.[3] Essentially a complete truck with the exception of the engine, transmission, and rear axles, the incomplete vehicles were designed for a dual purpose: to either reinstall an existing powertrain in a new truck or to allow for further customization not available from a dealership.
In 1986, Volvo AB entered into a joint venture with General Motors in heavy-truck production, with Volvo taking an 85% stake.[2][3] Having acquired White Motor Company in 1980, the joint venture would do business as Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation, selling trucks under the combined WhiteGMC product badge. Under the joint venture, GMC trucks were phased out in favor of White-designed Volvo GM products. In 1987, the final GMC General was produced, followed by the Brigadier in 1988 (badged as a WhiteGMC). - Auta a dopravní prostředky
You don’t have to know what everything is before you build it. But learning what it is as you build is part of the joy of modeling.
The FLAG(Foundation For Law And Government) semi-truck from "Knight Rider" 😊❤👍
This kit would be cool as the truck from Smokey and the Bandit 2
Yup, would just need to either build or aftermarket buy the Generals Quarters sleeper. Unfortunately no proper trailer kit exists.
AMT makes the best kits by far, I’ve had a bunch over the years have this GMC, a Diamonds Reo, Autocars etc, love this hobby trucks are the hardest to make look right and the most satisfying. I painted the frame orange on my General have fun all✌️
That paint scheme shown on the box is for the "inaugural" release of the General truck! I was working at the GMC dealer in Fargo, ND when they were introduced. they also released a van and a three quarter ton, four wheel drive fleetside pickup with the same paint scheme! I remember doing the predelivery inspection on the general and a guy bought it 2 weeks later, drove it for exactly 30 days, (double team drivers) and put 43,000 miles on it!
This reminds me of the GMC General tandem dump truck I used to drive back in the late seventies.
This brings back memories. I built this kit in the early 1980s when I was in junior high or high school. This was one of my favourite AMT truck kits. I'm looking forward to seeing you build it.
Oh yea!!!!!!!!!!
That is a GREAT kit, looking forward to getting another one!
I had never built any tractor kits before. Been watching some of your work, and considering giving it a try. Great work as always....
Start with the AMT International I reviewed, that is an excellent first semi tractor kit to try.
Try it they are the hardest to build, look the best and are the most satisfying
Saw two of these at a car show today. Cool!
Drove one back in the day very powerful truck
Excellent parts review! It's always nice to see what's in the box!!
Thank you!
As always great work!!! You always show the kits so well that it makes me wanna buy them great job!!!
Glad you like them!
Looks good to me. I'll have to pick one up. Thanks for the review
Thank you!
Cool that the decal sheet has Michigan Bicentennial plates on it.
Chris, I really enjoy the bonus video. You do a honest review and I like that. Great job.
Thank you!
I used to build the 3 n 1 kits in the 60s when was a kid. With. Car almost every week had a ton of extra parts. So I scratch built semis before they were ever manufactured them. Also a 24 scale road race and was a hit at the club. But the trailer was hitting cars at the other lanes.
I drove a real GMC general (an '80) early in the 90s when I first startedto drive as a fresh kid. And ironically I now am starting to restore a 74 IHC Transtar...which is another kit
Great review Chris. Are you going to build this one and do a video. I would love to see how you build it.
Cool!
just bought this kit along with a Sunco tanker and ford bronco with buggy and trailer
Awesome video I love those scales
Thanks a lot for the review Chris, it helped me make my choice. I'll get one for sure, it's too nice to pass up! Like you said, the detail is still pretty nice for the vintage, even if it didn't get remastered like the International Transtar kit. The retro decals are also a win over the Coca-Cola version! Cheers!
Thank you!
Making a comparison with my very old Chevy Bison, they both are exactly the same vehicle! grate model then and now.
Nice . Now I can pick this kit up for chrome parts.
I have the original 1/2 built sitting collecting dust and needs new Chrome !
Have fun!
Could you please make a video of you building the mack r685st by amt? Just got the model and messed up the paint job on the cab and hood so i have to build it still.
Great review Chris. I built one of these. Builds up nice. Have a great weekend.
Thanks, you too!
Bonus video. Great. Thanks for the review.
Thank you!
Cool unboxing, cool review.
This is a nice kit .
I built a kit very similar to this which was a snap tite back in the 80s
This is not it, was a lot less to build, but very simple
A good looking semi tractor - thanks for the review.
Thank you!
Chris, we all know the true hard part of a truck build is getting the hood to mate up to the cabin squared up and properly.
Mine is always getting the hood to tilt properly while also lining back up every time.
I have an original of this kit in my stash of "models to finish." I stopped at the point of placing the tires on the axles and some how got the brake cylinders rubbing the inside of the wheel. I got frustrated and put everything back in the box. I need to return and complete the truck.
Nice kit thanks!
Glad you like it!
One thing I wish they had done in this re-release; upgrade the 8V 92N engine with the 8V 92T which was a much more common engine.
Hey hpyguy, how's it going, I have a question for ya. I bought the freightliner sd/dd tractor kit and was wondering if you can put the day cab on the long frame rails to give it that stretched look. I enjoy your videos, and model on. Thank you.
Being plastic you can modify these trucks in thousands of ways, folks do it all the time.
Awesome open box review. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend Sir
Thanks, you too!
This is the Coke truck from a couple years ago reboxed with different decals. It's a pretty damn nice kit! Went together pretty slick.
That's an 8v71 not a 92T I think. The 92T was turbo charged wasn't it?
Regardless,it's a good kit,of an awesome truck!
Definatly an 8v71n
Good Day Modelcomrade. I hope you enjoyed the soon build from this Truck.. It will Great.. Like every Cat or tank.. 🤗😊😊😃🤭Have a nice weekend
Thanks again!
Great vid
Thank you!
Gotta build me a truck one of these days...
Chris+ not building this one would like to see you have done so anther great video keep em coming
Thanks 👍
Yes SIR, General. Yes sir indeed!
Some of the older kits are just a good even better then the expensive new ones . Need to to a truck and trailer . Something out of the military norm ...
I've actually driven one of these! lol
I have built a whole lot of the older ones when I was a a kid I'll still build them just do a whole lot better job than airbrush most mind
Nice kit!!
Thank you!
@@hpiguy You’re welcome!!
This was a truck you physically had to drive these high tech trucks today pretty much drive themselves
Any idea when that kit is coming out. I had one of the original kits way back when. Also drive one. My uncle had a 79 model with a 440 Detroit and a 13 speed road ranger transmission. It was a sweet truck. Looking forward to building it again.
I think the website says August release on this one.
@@hpiguy cool. Thanks. Definitely gonna be added to the collection to be built for sure. I have a sleeper that I think I can do the Smokey and the Bandit truck with so that’s the intended build I hope. Lol!!’
You can also do the truck, Rook 1, from Knight Rider.
Are those actual part numbers on the tree's? I'm looking forward to watching you build this kit. I'm currently building the amt White Freightliner and it is less than impressive. I've actually set it aside several times because it stopped being fun to build. The instructions and the lack of "exact location" of parts is horrible. This kit you just reviewed looks like it has been somewhat upgraded, is this true? Thanks for the content, I really enjoy the channel. Have a great day.
AMTs White Freightliner kit is one of the most hated kits to build. Nobody speaks highly of it. I built it as the single axle daycab. Wasn’t a terrible build but I could see the issues. A lot of the AMT kits of that time period are going to be a labor of love. You really need to love the end product to get threw some of them.
The older AMT truck kits can be a real challenge. AMT admits that.
You'll get through it, but you do the right thing by setting it aside and taking it back up now and then.
@@hpiguy thanks for the encouragement, appreciate it. I've got back to it and may get it finished tonight. Just need to attach the side mirrors, been dreading that the whole build. 😁 after that it's just a matter of finalizing the video and scheduling it. Part 1 of this build will drop this Saturday. Have a great day 👍
I wish it had a high sleeper like the one in smokey and the bandit 2
It's available in resin. Models by Dave. He's on Facebook
Any recommendations for my next kit?
Diamond Reo truck
I have a GMC model in the box raped in plastic yet never opened I also have 8 real GMC generals that I show and work every day 12-22-22
Is that also a new form like the Transstar or the old kit
Greats Tobias
These are all reissues.
Is the engine in this kit the same as the AMT Coca-Cola General Rig
Older, model kits by AMT, have part numbers on their trees, but the newer kits do not have part numbers on the trees ?
That's not what I said.
Some of the older truck kits don't have numbers on the trees, some do.
Build it without sleeper attachment would be cool
Are you gonna build this one?
Those triangular things could be the battery box.
Thank you!
I haven’t built a model in many many years, but I was attracted to this video because of the fact that it is a GMC general. I happen to own a real GMC five star general this week converted to an RV. I would love to build a model like this. Is this available?
Yes , it was recently re-released by Round 2 Models.
@@dwightcorbett8889 thank you
the truck in smoky and the bandit 2 had a taller sleeper with windows on the front
Yup, like I said, it's a start to make that truck, not an exact replica. Thank you!
Are you going to build this kit soon
I love that all of these old kits are being rebuilt.. why does it have to be China?? People buying this kit are old like me.. We are willing to pay more for US made.. See JR Salvino
@@johnberry2877 what is really concerning is that you know the original moulds are now in china. They are never coming back. Unfortunately if you don't buy them now you will never get another chance. I am sure in 10 years these moulds will be destroyed or come up missing.
I turned mine into a coke a cola haulet.
the one thing about this truck. it's a dead ringer to the coca-cola truck
Coming soon, a new model car company. Made in America.
Cool, send me their info on the FB page, I'll work with them on reviews as always.
Those are the battery box parts
Thank you!
Thay are battery boxes
Build it hurry, please!
these truck kits are great! have you ever seen an International cab-over day cab kit? I'd like to find one.
Check out some of his other reviews. He's done an IH cabover. Green & White in color.
that's a sleeper cab. I'm looking for one without the sleeper. I suppose I could get courageous and try to section the cab to make my own.
Yup, I think you'd have to make a custom out of the standard kit to get the one you're looking for.
@@hpiguy I'd like to paint one up like the one my dad drove back in the 80's. do you know of a good source for Metz Baking Co decals? perhaps someone that could custom make some for me?
@@hpiguy and possibly Old Home Bread trailer decals?
not nit picking just saying
