Wine World's BEST KEPT SECRET: Wachau Region (Austria)

  • Austria produces wines of exceptional quality, and, while each of its 17 regions offers great wines, be it white wine, red wine, sparkling wine or dessert wine - Wachau is by far one of my favorite ones. Wachau region is strongly associated with its Gruner Veltiner and Riesling wines and its unique wine classification system - Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd wines. And although there are so many quality producers in the region, who offer age-worthy white wines that rival those of Burgundy, Wachau is still one of the wine world's best kept secrets.

    Damage Control: I mistakenly noted that Weingut Nigl is from Wachau, while it is not - still great producer, though from Kremstal. Another gem 💎 to know. 😉

    Its so strange to be at the beginning of an amazing YT channel. I can see the excellence of the content is there, it just needs to get out there to more people. Production values off-the-charts for such a small audience, one feels truly honoured for the effort you're put in so early.

    Great video, loved it! I think Austria is overlooked in many things, but especially when it comes to wine (as you said). It could be that when people think of Austria, they only think of cold winters, skis and snow. But Austria is so much more. Even though Austria have cold winters it also have hot summers. Austria has a climate that is perfect for good wine making (and apricot cultivation, Marillenschnaps is really good).
    Cheers!🍷🇦🇹

    Ohhhhh nice selection. The wines of Wachau are amazing, it’s one of the few regions in Europe I haven’t been to yet - I hope that changes soon!
    The Nikolaihoff Vinothek Riesling is still one of the most memorable white wines in my life. I really love the Cooperative there too at all price points.

    Hi - Wachau is my home, and I know the regions and its wines for over 30 years
    Your summary is very good, beside the fact Nigl is not in Wachau ( but close to it) I would suggest to drop the names of Prager, Alzinger, Rudi Pichler and Högl, who are beside Pichler, Knoll and Hirtzberger the best in region....

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, I have to go down with shame, I know, I realised my mistake only already after I published the video. Nigl is in Krems. 🤦‍♀️

    This may be the first video I’ve seen about Austrian wines! In Canada, it is pretty easy to get Grüners (which I love), and Claus Preisinger’s blend, but that’s about it.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Před rokem

      Yes, I could imagine that they are hard to get. It is overall a very small country, production wise, and majority of the wine they consume within Austria. 🤷‍♀️ But they are definitely worth seeking out. 🙌

    I can only urge people to be more open about german and austrian dry Red Wines. I've had quite a number of absolutely stunning ones in recent years. The current generation of Winemakers really have transformed the Landscape completely in the last 2 decades.

    Interesting, is it really that unknown internationally?

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Před 6 měsíci

      It is a very small region, and majority of Austrian wines are consumed within the country. It is very rare to find these wines in the export markets, and then majority of them will be in a sommelier led restaurants or specialty wine shops 🤷‍♀️

    • @idnwiw
      @idnwiw Před 6 měsíci

      @@NoSediment Thanks for your answer - I'm one of those people "who consume it within the country", so my perception is different. The Wachau is a very highly regarded wine-making region within Austria.

  • @TheMV1992
    @TheMV1992 Před 7 měsíci

    Wachau is a gem indeed. I must say I am not sure I agree with Domäne Wachau. Sure, in supermarkets you can find wines from them below €10 produced for a specific retailer (such as HEMA in the Netherlands), and these are great value. But having been to their winery, their own, standard bottlings were not cheaper than at retailers and their wines in the 10-30 euro range were not of a great price-to-quality ratio. The winery felt very commercial and frankly a little overpriced, going for a premium winery allure even with their entry-level wines that weren't all that impressive.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Před 7 měsíci

      Well, this is what often I am confused about. Their wines are of highest quality and have earned a lot of praises and medals in a blind tastings, but because they are relatively large estate, people like to think that quality is not there. Top bottlings of names such as Knoll, FX Pichler, Hirtzberger will be twice or even 3x their price. And I stay strong with that they offer great quality for the price. Yes, they make clean style, not as opulent and “right away out there” and use no oak. And that is the question of style. But I have never doubted their quality.

  • @certisko1
    @certisko1 Před rokem +1

    Hi, nice video. Wachau is very nice region, but the wines from theese stars are overpriced (FX Pichler, Knoll etc.). From Austria I´d like wines from Kamptal, Kremstal and Burgenland (I live in Bratislava on the border with Burgenland and Carnuntum ).

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Před rokem

      Thank You! ☺️ I must agree, that these wines are not cheap, however, some of them age better than Burgundy (premox) and to me that still makes them a good bargain. They might not have any value in the secondary market though. But i buy to enjoy 😉
      I also enjoy Kamptal and Kremstal, and as You say, they offer even better price performance. 🍾🥂 Cheers!

      @MagicScent Před rokem

      Compared with crazy priced American, Italian and french wines you get a good deal for your money in Austria - even in Wachau.
