SF's water bottle refilling stations are safe, experts say. So, why don't people use them?

- You may have seen them -- public water bottle refilling stations all over San Francisco -- or maybe you haven't.
It's free, perfectly healthy, fresh drinking water that many seem to be saying "no thanks" to. Why? The answer might surprise you.

Nobody's going to use that water station with a crazy lady standing next to it.
duh! tap water is not the problem. the problem is the fountains being out in the street and so many idiots out there doing who knows what. keep the street fountains but open more in places where they could be monitored ie: inside buildings, shopping malls etc and then people will use them. why people use the one INSIDE the airport duh!!!
Cause I don't know if someone used the watering station as a bathroom or not.

I passed by one and saw someone washing hairs and shampoo bubbles all around
2 Reasons I stopped using them. 1. THERE AREN'T ENOUGH OF THEM AND CERTAINLY NOT IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS WE COULD USE THEM and 2. ALL OF THEM ARE DIRTY AND COVERED IN STICKERS, GRIME, DRUG USERS.
Because we are a disgusting society. New York has popular water stations but they don't have the sanitation issues or perception of unhealthiness like we do
If the city is covered in trash, poop, needles, and homeless people - why would you ever trust a public water station to be clean?
Ok, but a person not in the right mind set may put their mouth on the sprout or finger on it. They should of had a cover where the water falls from high up though a small hole in a cover near the bottom to prevent anyone from touching the sprout or directing putting their mouth on it.
SF's tap water is the best water i've had across the 50 states. I;ve only drank tap water across 8 different states, but my sentiment still stands!
i used to drink SF tap water from the hose connected to a floor spout on a football field. That water still tasted better that the chlorinated stuff I ger here in San Diego

yes SF water is the best because it comes from Hetch Hetchy in the Sierras but the problem is the access points since they're public fountains
What about exterior bacteria? It is not the solids in the water it is the exposure. If they cleaned daily maybe they get used. Is there any in West Part of City? Lands End has a fountain but the park near does not.

SF has a very interesting water history and yes is one of the naturally cleanest waters in the nation. It does taste great. However, I would never use a tap somewhere outside or downtown just because of all the druggies and randos that will do god knows what to them. I don't imagine the stations to be clean. If she was at a local mall or airport, I'm sure she would have seen people use these tap water stations there.

Larry is right. The design of them is not noticeable. You aren’t familiar with what it is. My SF workplace has a water fountain and it does taste very good.
How come parks dont have rangers and i rarely see maintenance people
The water is not the problem. I trust the water, I just don't trust people not touching the water fountain. With all the crackheads around I don't know what they have used the fountain for.

I saw a homeless guy using the water station wto clean himself at GGP. Doen't affect the qater quality, still good water, but I'm not using it.
The one at the Golden Gate Bridge, I have seen homeless and raccoons bathing in it.

Part of the problem i think is that most of these stations are next to a toilet. Most people dont usually feel like getting drinking water that close to a restroom.
Maybe cause the homeless clean up in them?
Make bathrooms instead
A LOT of the fountains on the DrinkTap map are inside fenced-off and gated playgrounds where an adult can't enter by themselves even if only to fill their water bottle.

You can buy bottles of water and other bottled drinks at SFO when you to the gates, they're at all the gift shops.

Having that reporter drink that water at 2:01 is like asking Mr. Burns to eat that three-eyed mutant fish on the Simpsons.
I remember a story saying that the water dispenser at SFO had more germs than anything else at tge airport... so we stopped using public dispensers. After reading the other comments, we definitely will not use.

There was 1 on Post street in front of the CYC “center “ it was removed already few days ago. I do not see anyone actually working at CYC “center” at the location except the owners son few times with the father…talking like a thug and walking with his pant s down with his underwear showing…they were both Asians but they talk like they are from the Hood and they are African Americans. I have only seen 1 worker cleaning 1 corner 1 time only.
