    This is an awesome idea. I replace the pads every year and unfortunately have already put new blue pads in this year. I will give this a try next year though by layering Aspen pads infront of the old blue pads. Another benefit should be that the blue pads will help prevent the fibers from the aspen pads from getting into the cooler and clogging it up. Which is why I chose synthetic pads originally. I also tried double layering blue pads years back, but it didnt seem to make a difference, so I gave up on the idea. Probably because it restricted too much airflow. This will be worth trying though. Thank you sir!

    Here’s my 2 cents. Take it or leave it. Ain’t no skin off my back.
    I revived a swamp cooler that really should have been tossed. But hey guys I was broke. Just bought my first place. So I fixed the holes in the pan ( jb-weld is the best) no more leaks. Any holes I covered up with aluminum foil tape. Aluminum foil tape is the shit. Being that it’s aluminum foil not only does it reflect heat off of the swamp cooler and keep it cooler. It is also UV resistant. From there I cleaned and fixed rust holes in the panels, once again, JB weld is the best. After that I had a decision. Aspen pads or blue pads. I chose blue but noticed they were pretty thin. So I decided to double them up and I got to say. That was the best decision I ever made. I live in Colorado Grand Junction area. It was 113° last year and my house was so cold that you was actually looking for a blanket to cover yourself with. Swamp coolers are simple dryer gets pulled through moist pads and pushed down into the house. The moisture in the pads, cools the hot air and makes it cold. Keep your swamp cooler on low cool all day and it’s colder. The slower you pull it. The colder it is. Also covering up any holes that will let in air that is not going through the pads will also ensure that all air is going through the pads. I also suggest installing a high flow pump. If it ain’t wet, it ain’t right. Oh, and as far as for how cold it was in my house, it was 64° and it was 113 outside. That’s a 49° difference. But like I said take her or leave it it’s up to you. Bought a house of 21 years old, I’m pretty proud of myself for reviving a piece of crap swamp cooler Thinking just this summer. Now I hope the darn thing don’t wear out. Just saying the ice cubes don’t melt my lemonade or iced tea whichever you prefer.

      You could get a thermostat one to keep it at a specific temp, unless you prefer it colder? What brand aluminum foil tape (I assume you used it to cover over above-water holes in the corners, that let through some air that doesn't have to pass past the pads? Cheers! :)

    Seems like using both pads would cut down the air flow so bad to the point of not even getting cold air to come through. Even though I'm sceptic, I'm gonna try it RIGHT NOW. I'll let y'all know how it goes. I'm here in Albuquerque btw

    Why not double up on the aspen pads?

  • @fakename7255
    @fakename7255 Před 2 lety +1

    I'll have to try that. I love the aspen pads but on super hot days they just can't keep up. My home stays livable but not cool. Have you looked into bleed lines? You could do a video on that, I just installed one on mine this year but it was dumping what felt like way too much water somewhere between 15 and 30 gal a day. I used it to water plants but it was still just too much. I stuck a bolt through the bleed line with 2 washers and a wing nut to clamp it and slow it down. We'll see this fall how well it helped with calcium buildup, I'm not that hopeful TBH. Have you tried 2x aspen pads instead of the blue? Might work even better unless it's that nice even compression you would get from the blue that makes the difference.

    I used those blue plastic pads or what ever the hell they're made of in my old swamp cooler and the damn things were so thick they cut down the air flow and it was hot. I went back to the straw pads. Now I have a master cool and I think I'll put reflective insulation about a 1/2 inch thick on top. I'll also try to put some gallon containers of frozen water in the tank.

      I disagree. I definitely prefer the swamp cooler which our landlord has now removed from the roof and installed expensive central air. At our previous residences we paid little to keep cool here in Utah and in Colorado.
