you pronounced it very well dear! (botanical dyer here in Japan), tataki (comes from the verb tataku (to hit or beat), zome comes from some (sew meh) meaning to dye, when 'some' comes after another word, we pronounce it as a z' sound, so tataki zome. Hapa means leaf, so hapazome is leaf dye.
Ai (eye) is the word for Japanese indigo , therefore Aizome is indigo dye.
i think the lady you borrow the garden from would maybe love a table cloth or table runner to have flowers on to remember summer garden :)

The colours stick around through washing and drying because she pre-treated the fibre with alum and a tannin. Any natural fibre can be used! So any cotton, linen, hemp, silk, wool etc. I think how loose or tightly woven, how thick or thin the fabric is probably impacts how it soaks up the colour, but all would work.

The colours slowly fade with sun exposure and washing, but last longer with fibre that has been pretreated with a mordant and with gentle washing. If you think about it, all historical garments were dyed with natural dyes prior to the invention of synthetic ones, and many textiles in museums still have colour! So although it fades, it won't wash out immediately. The flowers she used are all known as good dye plants, so will last longer than other ones.

if you check her other videos she shows tannin premordant . you can also search for alum pre mordant on youtube, usually it is 10% of alum diluted in warm water, (10 % of the weight of the fabric you are dyeing) , the water should be the volume enough to soak your fabric in, i usually leave it in this mordant for an hour in hot weather or several hours to overnight in cold weather,. wring out the water, let it sit for 12 hours to bind even longer with the material, lastly rinse well. then you will flower pound onto dry fabric, and dont wash straight away, if you can leave it for even up to a week in a dry airy place out of direct sunlight, then iron to set even further, then you can gently hand wash and always dry in the shade,

This all depends of how you fix the colours, the dye you use and the fabric you use and how you care for your dyed piece 🥰

Yes they can. Of course, depending what pretreatment, flowers fabric etc you have chosen will all affect how the colours last

I can't wait to try this! If it wasn't 11:45pm I'd do it right now!
As a dyer, I can offer that I wash in synthropol for the 1st wash to set the dye... just adding that very humble thought because several people asked about washing after 💜
