** edit ** I was recommended to try bunpro instead, Duolingo is still decent for hiragana and katakana but anything beyond basic recognition, try something else. (I'm still learning myself, take whatever I say with a grain of salt tyvm)
Start with recognising hiragana and katakana, Duolingo is decent enough for that. It would also teach you decent grammar and sentences... (Please note you would always sound stiff if you follow this 100%, think of how english was taught when you were a child kind of stiff)
After that it's just bunch of common Kanji and practicing talking to people
**disclaimer** I'm just a learner myself, this is not going to make you an expert, it's just to get you started.
Don't rush to Kanji. Start with basic letter and how to read n write. At the same time, watch any movie or stream you like. (i got recemmended to watch TV news when im studying English.) Note that anime is highly unrecommended. They are enjoyable to watch, but most expressions would be awkward in casual conversation.
Search for itazuraneko or themoeway. Everything you need to know about starting to learn japanese is there,
Cure dolly on youtube. No skipping on the lessons.
