    Its fairly amazing that these two guys did this interview back in 1993. At that time, while they both certainly had high aspirations, the odds of either of them becoming PM were rather long (after all John Smith was expected to lead the charge in 19997) much less both of them.

      +Mark Johnson Blair won in 1997 simply because he was seen as young, dynamic, exciting, breath of fresh air etc. and everyone was burnt out after 18 years of Conservative rule. If John Smith had lived to lead into the 1997 election I doubt there would have been the massive landslide we saw. John Major was seen as a bit of a dinosaur as well.

    • @Sean-zg4iy
      @Sean-zg4iy Před 7 lety +4

      Agreed John Smith looked a shoe in for the next PM by this stage post Black Wednesday but TB & GB were very much seen as the next potential leaders of the Labour Party with I would suggest the favourite at this point being GB as he was considered the senior of the two by most.

      During this time Labour I believe hadn't fully decided to go hard right like they ended up doing with Blair and New Labour. I suspect Smith would have been slightly closer to the left, probably doesn't follow the USA into Iraq.

    Very good. It amazes me the stick Blair gets, whatever anyone says he really did get things done. Comparing the Thatcher years to the Blairs years is insane. Then there was Gordon Brown who was always a nice man and very statesman like. Ahhhh what happened...
    For Tony I could say the Iraq war obviously, but that didn't stop his election success, he never did lose. Then Gordon it was the global financial crisis, he never defended himself well on that but as it turns out bailing out the banks was the right thing to do.
    To go from Blairs 418seats (the most Labours ever had) to 232 in less than 20 years is insane. I'm going to stay with the party whatever the leadership result is but I'm very worried for our future.

    • @LRC92
      @LRC92 Před 8 lety +8

      ***** Actually, President Lyndon Johnson put massive pressure on Wilson to send troops to Vietnam. Denying this is ignoring history. Wilson's excuse was the British military commitments to the Malayan Emergency. In private, Wilson was starkly anti-war, as was most of the Labour Party at the time. He still got a lot of stick for supporting the US's effort, but had it been Blair we may have had a whole generation scared by Vietnam, as in America.
      Blair did some great things in government but made an absolute mess in terms of foreign policy, especially in Iraq. And for a Labour PM, he came way too close to George W Bush; someone who makes Thatcher look like a moderate. No progressive cause will be furthered by aligning with quasi-fascists.

    Its interesting that they are talking about the 1992 UK LAB leadership election where John Smith was elected as LAB leader. According to the film "The Deal" in 1992 Tony Blair pushed Gordon Brown to run against Smith which Brown turned down. And then in 1994 Blair ran for the LAB leader after Smith passed away unexpectedly and it seems Blair made a "deal" with Brown for Brown to step aside for Blair in return for Blair's support for Brown to be his successor.
