I still have nothing bad to say as he did what he thought was right based upon info from the intelligence services. Six enquiries found no lying or sexing up etc.
Its fairly amazing that these two guys did this interview back in 1993. At that time, while they both certainly had high aspirations, the odds of either of them becoming PM were rather long (after all John Smith was expected to lead the charge in 19997) much less both of them.
+Mark Johnson Blair won in 1997 simply because he was seen as young, dynamic, exciting, breath of fresh air etc. and everyone was burnt out after 18 years of Conservative rule. If John Smith had lived to lead into the 1997 election I doubt there would have been the massive landslide we saw. John Major was seen as a bit of a dinosaur as well.
Agreed John Smith looked a shoe in for the next PM by this stage post Black Wednesday but TB & GB were very much seen as the next potential leaders of the Labour Party with I would suggest the favourite at this point being GB as he was considered the senior of the two by most.
During this time Labour I believe hadn't fully decided to go hard right like they ended up doing with Blair and New Labour. I suspect Smith would have been slightly closer to the left, probably doesn't follow the USA into Iraq.
We in Ireland owe Tony Blair a debt of gratitude. The Good Friday Agreement would not have happened on the clock of any other UK Prime Minister in history
Very good. It amazes me the stick Blair gets, whatever anyone says he really did get things done. Comparing the Thatcher years to the Blairs years is insane. Then there was Gordon Brown who was always a nice man and very statesman like. Ahhhh what happened... For Tony I could say the Iraq war obviously, but that didn't stop his election success, he never did lose. Then Gordon it was the global financial crisis, he never defended himself well on that but as it turns out bailing out the banks was the right thing to do. To go from Blairs 418seats (the most Labours ever had) to 232 in less than 20 years is insane. I'm going to stay with the party whatever the leadership result is but I'm very worried for our future.
+For Music So what Hitler also got things done and was elected like Bliar! Bliar is a war criminal responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
***** Actually, President Lyndon Johnson put massive pressure on Wilson to send troops to Vietnam. Denying this is ignoring history. Wilson's excuse was the British military commitments to the Malayan Emergency. In private, Wilson was starkly anti-war, as was most of the Labour Party at the time. He still got a lot of stick for supporting the US's effort, but had it been Blair we may have had a whole generation scared by Vietnam, as in America. Blair did some great things in government but made an absolute mess in terms of foreign policy, especially in Iraq. And for a Labour PM, he came way too close to George W Bush; someone who makes Thatcher look like a moderate. No progressive cause will be furthered by aligning with quasi-fascists.
I agree, Blair was a decent PM and got things done until Iraq war and invasion, the Iraq war was unfortunately his downfall and where I lost my respect for him. Other wise his legacy could've been SO different!
Gordon Brown seems quite a bit more intelligent than Blair in this video. That's to say nothing about my opinions on them, but if I were in a crisis I'd call Gordon before Tony on the basis of this clip.
I'm an American leftist so I don't really like either. However Brown is undoubtedly a brilliant mind while Blair is the mouthpiece. Blair stood for nothing other than getting elected, and unfortunately he considers that to be a great success.
@@James_36 I'm so confused by this comment lmao. Why would a leftist like Tony Blair? Among the British left, he was (and to many still is) one of the most hated figures in British politics lol, probably second only to Thatcher
Government responsibility got to him for sure but mostly it was his bitterness about been passed over by Blair for the leadership and his obsessive desire to take over asap
Its interesting that they are talking about the 1992 UK LAB leadership election where John Smith was elected as LAB leader. According to the film "The Deal" in 1992 Tony Blair pushed Gordon Brown to run against Smith which Brown turned down. And then in 1994 Blair ran for the LAB leader after Smith passed away unexpectedly and it seems Blair made a "deal" with Brown for Brown to step aside for Blair in return for Blair's support for Brown to be his successor.
It's fun to look back and see the rivalry, or do we see what we want to see? Blair looking a bit sick discussing MP salary is funny, he made money eventually!
Then Tony Blair was employment secretary not home secretary i remember they were both upgraded when John Smith became leader immediately i cannot remember an other shadow chancellor under John Smith s leadership if i am mistaken please correct me
This is a doozy. I found it funny that whenever the guy asked mundane personal questions the duo were able to get a decent answer out of it. Edit: This was in the Blair and Brown New Labour Revolution documentary series. They came to see how centre-left politics could win elections.
This interview gives the impression that the two future prime ministers liked each other, when in reality Blair spent his 10 years desperately trying to get rid of Gordon Brown, despite the fact the Blair's job was to put Brown in power.
They were really close at the time but then Brown felt betrayed when Blair ran for leadership in 1994. I wouldn't necessarily say he was trying to get rid of Brown, because he still acknowledged that Gordon was very intelligent and able but just impossible to work with.
Seems like Tony and Gordon wouldn't have made this trip together to the US if their boss wasn't already viewing them as future Labour PMs or Chancellors.
I didn't know Blair was already Shadow Home Secretary by 1993.......so betwixt he and Gordon, things were already prepared for the Next Generation, 4 years before their victory in 1997.
Blair's greatest mistake.... 1997 change the electoral system to PR.... EVERY GENERAL ELECTION AFTER 2005... WOULD HAVE BEEN PR.... BREXIT WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE...
To be fair, I have little bad to say about Blair before 2003...
I AGREE !!!
Clause 4
Which is why Labour needs to revive his political style; keep a clean slate on wars but govern in the same way= what people want
I love Blair!

2:58 Gordon Brown, an actual prophet, foretells his own downfall
You can already see that there’s no comparison between Brown and Blair, Blair clearly has the charm and the ear for brevity.
