Takht-i-Bahi is an Indo-Parthian archaeological site of an ancient Buddhist monastery in Mardan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The site is considered among the most important relics of Buddhism in all of what was once Gandhara and has been "exceptionally well-preserved.
A monastery under the domain of Purusapura which was also a center for Buddhist learning, the origin of the name Takht-i-Bahi is uncertain. Local belief postulates that site got its name from two wells on the hill, or the springs nearby. In Persian, Takht means 'top' or 'throne' while bahi means 'spring' or 'water'. When combined, its meaning is 'spring from the top' or 'high spring', and there were two springs on the top of mountains. Another meaning suggested is 'throne of origin'.
The ruins are located about 15 kilometers from Mardan. A small fortified city, dating from the same era, sits nearby. The ruins also sit near a modern village known by the same name. It is located around 500 feet atop the small hill and around 2 km (1.2 mi) from the village bazar. The surrounding area is known for sugar cane, wheat, maize, vegetable, and orchard cultivation. Once remote and little visited, the site now has a road and car park, set below the ruins, and has become popular with visitors.
There are four main areas of the Takht Bahi complex:
The Stupa Court, a cluster of stupas located in a central courtyard.
The monastic chambers, consisting of individual cells arranged around a courtyard, assembly halls, and a dining area.
A temple complex, consisting of stupas and similar to the Stupa Court, but of later construction.
The Tantric monastic complex, which consists of small, dark cells with low openings, which may have been used for certain forms of Tantric meditation.
Additional structures on the site may have served as residences or meeting halls, or for secular purposes. All of the buildings on the site are constructed from local stone, and are mortared with lime and mud.
Archaeologists have divided the history of the complex into four periods, beginning in the 1st century BCE.
The monastic complex was likely founded in the early 1st century CE. It is proven by an inscriptions found bearing the name of Gondophares (20-46 CE). After Gondophares, the area fell under control of Kujula Kadphises, the first Kushan king. This first era continued until the 2nd century CE, and is associated with another Kushan king Kanishka, as well as early Parthian and subsequent Kushan kings. The second construction period, which included the creation of the Stupa Court and assembly hall, took place during the 3rd and 4th centuries CE. A third construction period, associated with the later Kushan dynasty and the Kidara Kushana rulers, occurred during the 4th and 5th centuries.
The region was subjugated by Huns in middle of fifth century CE which ended the Kushan rule. The Hun Toramana and then his son Mihirakula slaughtered the inhabitants of the Gandhara region and destroyed most if not all Buddhist monasteries. Evidence suggests that Takht-i-Bahi was destroyed in the same period of destruction by the Huns, however the complex appears to have been in use until 7th century CE.
The first modern historical reference to these ruins was made in 1836 by a French officer who referred to the Buddhist remains in a village named Mazdoorabad. Explorations and excavations on the site began in 1864. A significant number of objects can be found in the British Museum. The site underwent a major restoration in the 1920s.

ان کھنڈرات کا طرزِ تعمیر ٹیکسلا کے کھنڈرات سے مشابہت رکھتا ہے۔ لیکن ٹیکسلا میں بنی دیواریں تخت بھائی سے بہتر، نفیس اور خوبصورت ہیں۔ اس کی غالباً وجہ وہاں پر پایا جانے والا پتھر بہتر کوالٹی کا ہے۔ اس کے علاوہ ٹیکسلا اس وقت دارالحکومت ہوا کرتا تھا۔ ممکن ہے ان کے پاس دولت زیادہ ہو یا ٹیکسلا میں بننے والی عمارات بعد میں بنائی گئی ہوں۔ جب فنِ تعمیر میں جدت و نفاست آ گئی ہو۔ ٹیکسلا کی بنی عمارات میں چونے اور مٹی کا استعمال نظر نہیں آتا۔ اس کی جگہ بڑے اور چھوٹے پتھروں کو آپس میں پھنسا کر دیواریں بنائی گئی ہیں اور غالباً یہی طریقہ تخت بھائی میں بھی استعمال کیا گیا۔
ممکن ہے کہ ایسا ہو۔ بہرحال آپ کے معلوماتی تبصرے کا بہت شکریہ۔ خوش رہیں، سلامت رہیں۔

There are only ruins of Buddhism in Pakistan. No intact stupa, pagoda or its tower remains.
I know , but there used to be one in Peshawar, which was the tallest building in the ancient world.@@zulfiqargilani
Yes, that was Kanishka Stupa. The stupa was built during the Kushan era to house Buddhist relics, and was among the tallest buildings in the ancient world. Now this isn't exist.

بدھا کے تین مجسمے ان کی زندگی میں بنائے گئے پہلا مجسمہ آٹھ سال کی عمر میں بنایا گیا اس کے باپ نے بنوایا تھا جو آج بھی ان کے آبائی شہر بودھ گیان میں موجود ہے دوسرا مجسمہ باراں سال کی عمر میں اور تیسرا مجسمہ اسی سال کی عمر میں بنایا گیا یہ دونوں مجسمے اس کے خاندان میں ہی تھے ان کے خاندان کی شہزادیاں اپنے ساتھ جہیز میں لے گئیں تھیں اور وہ دونوں مجسمے تبت کے ایک مندر میں موجود ہیں جو بدھ کا بہت بڑا مندر ہے اور وہاں بدھئ مت کی خصوصی عبادات کی جاتی ہیں اس کے بعد چوتھا مجسمہ ان کی وفات کے سات آٹھ سو سال کے بعد بنایا جو کی لاھور کے عجائب گھر اصلی حالت میں محفوظ ہے
ماشا اللہ، آپ کی معلومات خاصی حد تک درست ہیں۔
میری معلومات کے مطابق بدھا کی زندگی میں ان کے تین مجسمے بنائے گئے، 8، 12 اور 25 سال کی عمر میں۔ بدھا نے ان مجسموں کو پسند ضرور کیا لیکن ان کی پرستش یا ان کے سامنے بیٹھ کر پوجا کا حکم نہیں دیا۔
تیسرے مجسمے یعنی 25 سال والے مجسمے کو ریاست کا حصہ بنایا گیا جبکہ 8 سال والے مجسمے کو نیپال اور 12 سال والے کو چین بھیج دیا گیا۔ کئی سو سال بعد چین کے بادشاہ سونگستن گیمپو کو جو 618 سے 650 تک بر سر اقتدار رہا، کو یہ مجسمے تبت میں اس کی
نیپالی ملکہ بھریکوتی اور چینی ملکہ وین چنگ نے بطور تحفہ پیش کیے کیونکہ بادشاہ کا اپنا مذہب تبتین بدھ ازم تھا۔
یہ دونوں مجسمے اب لہاسہ کی عبادت گاہوں جاکھانگ اور روموشی میں موجود ہیں۔
یہ درست ہے کہ بدھا کے مختلف انداز میں مجسمے اس کی موت کے کئی سو سال بعد بنائے گئے۔ بدھا کے قدیم ترن مجسمے گندھارا یعنی پاکستان سے ہی ملے لیکن یہ برٹش میوزیم، دہلی میوزیم اور ٹوکیو میوزیم میں ہیں۔ لاہور میں موجود مجسمہ ان کے بعد کا ہے۔
کمی کوتاہی کے لیے معذرت، آپ کا معلومات افزا تبصرہ بہت پسند آیا اور خوشی ہوئی کہ میرے ناظرین بہت سے معاملات میں مجھ سے زیادہ معلومات رکھتے ہیں، خوش رہیں، سلامت رہیں۔ اللہ سے دعا ہے کہ آپ یہ علم ہمیشہ بانٹتی رہیں۔
