I was fortunate enough to see them twice in 1992. It changed my life.
I wish you all a chance to experience this in real time it’s incredibly amazing, you get to feel the drums vibrations through your whole body
my parents were peace corps volunteers in the early 70s. since we moved back from Zaire they would play this song a lot on the stereo...loudly. I always loved it though I still dont know the words.
There's drumming, and there's DRUMMING! 💥🌋🌟........freeeeeowwwwww!!!!!!!!
This is one of those things meant to be cranked, windows being rattled, not able to hear much else, for an hour nonstop. Damned right.
Couldn't agree more. Last time I had one of those sessions, I had to have the plasterer in afterwards!
Incredible as it seems, I used to listen to this when I was about 18, I'm now 66! Just wish I could still jump about now like I did then 😁
Me to ool
Love it herd it at a prty
I remember buying the Vinyl of this when I was a kid in England and loving it forever. Im 65 now haha still loving it.
I've seen them, at the Piece Hall, Halifax, UK, sounded just like this. What an amazing emotional experience it was.
I still have the original single from my father. This is timeless music. Nice
Rythme envoûtant, j'aime depuis que j'ai entendu la première fois, encore et encore.
The real heavy stuff.
wasn't this the recording of a French musicologist in the 1950's? In any case its a wonderful piece of drumming and an indication that people from the poorest nation on the planet have a lot going for them if they can come up with music like this as a communally act. Richly complex rhythmic sequences with all the nuances that one would expect of professional musicians. Truly great .
Stunning. Turn it up real loud. Feel the vibrations. Feel happy.
Excellent..best of Burundi
O I first found this at a festival wen I was 15 years old And I loved it then as I STILL do now. I only heared the 45 record version. The voices r brill interspersed within the constant rythym. Clears the cobwebs away 4 sure.
Wonderful, I can't stop listening to it again and again.
Rejoice always!!!
famously featured on joni mitchell's track "the jungle line here"
@Altair8801 Real World is a recording studio, somewhere in the English countryside (philosophy: 'the recording of art is more important than the art of recording')... what you hear is a 'live studio recording': the musicians walked in, put their drums down and without further ado started drumming and singing for half an hour. And yes, it was in 1987.
awesome and enriching i,m alive
YES!!!!. :)
Yeah... but they did it so very well;-)

@mahargengraver You're absolutely right.
EL. Thank`s so much for this!.
Btw, the cd is still available - it's great 'driving music': no chemical stimulants needed on long boring stretches of highway ;) Warning: listening to this trancy-dancy drumming for more than half an hour may make you attempt to take off from the fast lane.
love the comment ... love the name 😀

me too!
It's my pleasure ☺ cheers!
Did you also find the fab original 7" single release of the Mike Steiphenson arrangement?

Screaming in a ritual of sound and time...."
Most excellent!! (-: Before it was closed, I think the Jungle Line ran betweem the Bakerloo Line and the Northern Line.....no wait...didn't it get replaced by the Jubilee Line!? ;-)

I don't think so? This is a later recording from 1987. The drumming heard on the "Burundi Steiphenson Black" 'meld' issued in 1971 may be using the original recording made by Sevac Ekian.
Reminds me of Crash Worship

"In 1967 Sevac Ekian recorded a ceremony of Ingoma Tribe in the East African State Burundi. Back home he developed the idea to arrange a "musical marriage"(mariage musical). Therefore he asked the producer Mike Steiphenson to create a fitting tune to those absorbing drums he brought.
Steiphenson produced a psychedelic harmony consisting of e-guitar and piano and inserted it in Ekian's recording." Source ~ Kosmonautenschule
