+RedskinsCanefan21 The only reason MMA shorts are acceptable to wear in wrestling, is if you have an MMA fighter gimmick. They're really two different things, and I don't think MMA shorts should be passed off as wrestling gear.

In terms of wrestling gear, does that also explain how CZW got more serious and better under Hyde's ownership over Zandig's? In the Zandig years, many people had the look of wrestlers in street clothes, but under DJ Hyde, about the only time you see people wrestle in clothes is in a deathmatch, where wearing jeans will protect your legs from getting sliced up.
In my mind, CZW has been better under Hyde's ownership for a multitude of reasons, and wrestlers wearing actual gear definitely makes it feel more legit.
Johnny Unitas wore Chuck Taylors, during his face run with the Colts, but it was part of his gimmick.

I feel sorry for people who sold wrestling tights and trunks in 99-01. Wrestling is having its biggest boom period, yet it seemed like everyone in the biz was wearing jorts instead of proper gear. Had to be frustrating.
Hey brian, i'm an enthusiast from Maine, we don't have that many promotions up here, in fact i've had training in the only surviving local promotion near me that's within 200 miles from me. I've come to the conclusion that i don't have the body to physically be a wrestler, my ankles are like glass and i have several problems with my knees and back. But i've always admired the managing side of the business and have decided to focus my training on becoming a manager. I would love to see an episode on tips for becoming a manager, how to be unique with your style of managing, and maybe a top ten wrestling managers list. I hope to see more of your stuff

I just realized that I can join my local promotion in ten months, I have a family history of a great body build. 6’3” 180 lbs. My moms friend is a tattoo artist. Which means I get free tattoos once i turn 18. My parents are good friends with a couple who make clothing and banners which means ring tights. My mom ran off years ago and my dad is in full support of my wrestling dreams. And my best friend is one half of the tag team champions of the promotion I mentioned earlier. So yay my foots in the door, kinda.

I agree on all you you said, but would like to add something you didn't mention: Even refs, announcers, and managers should have gear. Speaking as someone who's been both the first and last... As a ref, why yes, I had gear. Dress shoes, dark slacks, and the traditional zebra striped shirt. That wasn't the promoter's preference, but he didn't have a PWA ref's shirt that fit me, but what I had was unquestionably a ref's shirt. As a manager, why yes, I had gear. True, I bought it at Tip Top Tailors, Town Shoes, Chapel, and Canes Canada, but the suit, shoes, hat, and cane are as much gear for me as tights and a mask are for the guy I manage. I even grew some of the gear myself--specifically, my distinctive face fuzz. *Laughs* For the non-wrestler gimmick and using traditional gear, I'd like to put forth my buddy BVD, who has a cowboy gimmick. He wears traditional tights and boots--but he comes out to old country music, wears a cowboy hat, and carries a bull rope with a bell on it! Blat, gimmick established. Also, a lot of those who do wear jeans also wear pads and boots, so they STILL look somewhat like wrestlers.
Exactly! You dress for the role you play, and you invest in an outfit as a manager or a ref the same way you do if you're a wrestler!
+Wrestling With Wregret Speaking of gear, how often have you had it (as a manager or as a wrestler) where you looked at something that was lying around and decided "Hm. This will work!"? Me, it was my hatband (I was trying to match my client's colours, and I have a lovely green chainmail hatband), my pince-nez glasses--which had my Mom's necklace for a fob--and some cuff links and a tie clip I'd inherited from my grandfather (the jewelry's getting replaced, though. I've had to repair one of the cuff links).

I was wondering if you could do an episode on how to get bookings once you have bought gear, established a gimmick, and been trained?
That's predominantly on the school you trained at. As far as I've seen, most schools are affiliated with bookers and small organizations.

Most schools in my area have a 16 yr age requirement, so I am hoping that they will let me in a year early considering I'm 6'2 180lb and, at least in my eyes, I am just as mature and knowledgeable about professional wrestling as most adults

+Alec Rants No one is going to come fresh out of the package with a multi-layered, subtle and nuanced gimmick. Most of the time, you're either super-generic or WAY over the top and over time, you end up meeting somewhere in the middle. In that sense, there's not much you can do to avoid a "cheese" factor because wrestling today is inherently cheesy.

Hey Brian, for a future episode of Getting Into the BiZ, could you discuss The Importance of Mic Skills and being able to cut a good promo? This is a skill that up-and-coming wrestlers should develop if they want their character / gimmick to get over with fans. An alternative to this of course would be to have a manager / valet to serve as a "mouthpiece" for said wrestler and immediately names like: Paul Heyman, Bobby Heenan and Jim Cornette come to mind as examples of some of the best in the business. On a side note, would you agree that studying tape / footage of classic wrestling matches is beneficial to rookie wrestlers who want to master the art of ring psychology in order to tell better stories with their matches?

Would you ever be interested in doing a video on the XWF? They saw themselves as a replacement for WCW, and had a lot of big stars attached but it was one of the biggest fumbles of all time.
Can you choose your own gimmick (when joining a promotion) or do the bookers choose? If you can't, how do you choose the right gear if you don't know your gimmick yet?
+Scott Vickery Traditionally, most indy wrestlers who start out pick their own character and get their own gear, whether it be a "realistic" look or some wild gimmick, or somewhere in-between. Some bookers/promoters might want to give you a gimmick, but if they do that they really ought to provide you with some gear to match that look or at least help compensate you for the gear you will have to buy for it. Few, if any, indy feds pay enough to dictate what gimmick you should have unless there are special cases.

I am an untrained enthusiast flush in the plush of the rush. I have shopped briefly for gear and was planning on keeping it simple, single color trunks, boots, knee and elbow pad(s). Simple. Just like the co-operative infinite avarice you all inhabit.

I don't know to me gear and uniform have always been things you had to earn the right to wear. For instance If I turned up to wrestling school or wrestling practice on my first day in a professional looking kit or attire. I would be feeling as though I would be insulting the teachers and other students and the business as a whole. To me it would just kind of scream that I'm just some guy who has a lot of money who paid for the outfit just to feel like a pro wrestler rather than someone who worked hard to be a wrestler.
Since wrestling is quite a dues paying business I assumed that having the "pro look" is something that had to be earned rather than purchased
+spider5600 I understand that perspective, but that's really not the case. First of all, when you're just training in a school you're allowed to dress down, wearing a t-shirt, gym shorts, etc. Having "the look" of a wrestler with the proper gear isn't something you have to work at to earn, it's really supposed to be part of the job description, so once you get closer to being able to work shows, then you invest in stuff like tights and the like.

Here's an important question - what about music? Yes, theme music is very important, and it has to match your character. But unless you make your own, you are using someone else's. What kinds of hoops are typical for getting the rights to a particular theme sone, especially if it is not a common Top 40 song?
If you work the indies, it doesn't really matter about song rights unless the fed has a TV deal. But as long as you have the rights to a song you can do with it what you wish.
Can you do a video on some of the individual pieces of gear and their specifics? Like, what's with those arm sleeve things I see some guys wear? They look cool but do they actually DO anything?
Probably not, I touched on the basics here (boots, pads, tights), the rest is cosmetic and not totally essential. Wrist tape is the only other thing worth mentioning IMO.

I've got one tricky question:
I live in La Paz, Bolivia. There is one wrestling school that I'm aware of in the entire country. I would very much like to improve the wresting biz over here, but I don't know how. Last month Super Crazy did a two day show with the "biggest" national promotion and the event had like 260~ish people in the audience, which I think is crazy (no pun intended).
I don't know what I could do to elevate the level of professional wrestling in my country, I've even tought about becoming a wrestler my self, but I REALLY am not the physical type of guy. There is this "Wrestling Chollitas" promotion as well, which is the most gimmecky thing you'll ever see, except they are real "cholitas", the thing with them is that their shows are mostly for tourists, so there is little to no continuity.
Hmm... what about something like Kevin Nash's typical gear or the Undertaker's gear he rocked at Summerslam this year to say the least? I think I'd be most comfortable in that.
+Final Cut Gaming That's basically the pleather pants look I was discussing in this video. I think if you supplement it with other traditional gear (boots, singlet?, etc.) then you should be fine!

+Yohynnes Joseph Go back to my 2nd episode in this series (FAQs) to hear my advice on booking a wrestling promotion. I'm not sure what you mean by an "unscripted" promotion though...
So, I fully intend on working a psycho gimmick - hearing voices and similar, what advice would one offer on looking "professionally unprofessional"? I was thinking in some ways getting gear that looks like it's been damaged and mismatching in ways like taping one hand and having a glove for the other one - or would something like that make me seem like a dime-a-dozen trashbagger?
There was someone in my local promotion who worked the same gimmick, they wore an orange prison jumpsuit that looked like it was damaged, small tears and stains etc. I think the tape on one hand and glove on the other's a good idea, though. Maybe try writing little messages or some kind of symbol on the tap, just an idea.

In fairness I don't even think you need to wear anything flashy or fancy either, I mean, Mark Haskins and Marty Scrull both wear black trunks, knee-pads and kickpads (which is why I can't tell the two apart very well) but they both look like they could punt your head off with ease.
Kaltagstar96 Well, when you've got an entrance coat like Marty, you don't really need much. And Haskins' wrestling style change really fits his plain black stuff, makes him seem like a badass.
+Adam Plumbridge Off the top of my head, you could get tights made custom for you that show off some sort of a "split personality" or "psycho" visual...mismatching colors, random patchwork, etc. Maybe even different-colored boots, if you can afford it. Don't forget to do your hair all crazy-like! :)

Hey Brian, I want to ask you about your moveset.
What is the best type of moveset to have with your character? Is there proper wrestling psychology that goes along with it?
Would it make sense for a truck driver wrestler to know all sorts of technical, amateur style wrestling? Also when you're starting out how much wrestling hold/moves should you know?
+Robert Dundee The list of moves you know often has very little to do with how to work a match, and there is no magic number of moves you should have memorized when you start out. A good trainer will help lead the way on this front.
But to answer your question, not many truck diver gimmicks would be technical on the level of Bret Hart.
+Robert Dundee I'd go with a Brawler or Powerhouse Style moveset for a Truck Driver gimmick.
I had expected this video to explain how proper gear is safer for you and anyone in the ring with you, but that never came up. I not in any position to say that should have been mentioned; if you didn't, then I assume it's not a big factor in the wearing of gear. I'm just really surprised. As someone who knows little to nothing about the logistics and work of wrestling, I assumed that would be the big reason for the standardised gear.
One worry I have about trying it is the toll it would take on the length and quality of my life. Most of the people who are dying too early and are talking about how painful their lives are seem to be from Attitude Era back.
When listening to the Stone Cold Podcast with Mick Foley they talk about how much pain they're feeling day to day (Mick especially I'm guessing).
One of the reasons I really do respect and admire Pro Wrestling is because the performers really do suffer for their art and it's beautiful in that way.
A more direct question I suppose would be, how would you say the wrestling business has changed health and medicine wise? I imagine guys in the Indies all have it harder than guys who have made it to the "big time" (forgive the amateur lingo).
+Rusty In terms of health and medicine, all athletic endeavors have evolved, with more awareness to things like concussions, health practices to avoid infections among athletes, etc. Exercise, nutrition and physical rehabilitation have all made huge leaps over the last couple of decades, so people can get in shape in more realistic ways.
Dealing with the pain is one of those trade-offs with wrestling. Most former pro athletes who suffer physically today would likely tell you that even if they knew then what they do now, they would still do it all over again.

So I live in Germany at the moment, at the border of the netherlands. And there is not a single training dojo or anything close here. I was wondering if there is anything I could do in maybe my backyard or gym or basically whatever to get started on the basics. Are there online training courses to help get me started, is it wise to follow those online courses.
In a previous video you stated that moving could be an option but moving to a different continent seems kinda extreme. (even though I am considering it for the future.)

Should I gimmick resemble any traits of your real life character? Also what about theme music? Do you pick that or do you get assigned to a song because a theme is a big part of character.
+Mason Lubas Your gimmick is usually whatever you want it to be. I've seen people just be extensions of themselves and I've also seen perfectly normal or quiet dudes have the wildest gimmicks that are nothing like who they really are. It's all about what character you want to play (also ask yourself, "Does this make sense?").
Your theme song should be a reflection of your character. You should ask, "If my guy were handed a book of CDs, is this the song my guy would pick?" The lyrics ought to make sense to your character (though it's even better if your theme is instrumental!). And here's a note that you can take or leave, but I recommend not choosing a song with an obnoxiously-long intro before the drums or the guitar kicks in. Don't make everyone wait for you to come out from behind the curtain, you're not the Undertaker.
Okay I just want an opinion on this. I am going to be doing an Evangelical pastor like gimmick and well one thing that I'm running a snag into is the type of gear/attire I would wear. My trainer suggested something like a Mr. Hughes style with dress pants with a dress shirt with the sleeves cut off with wrestling boots. But I was wondering if not that what would you suggest?
+Kite2014 What your trainer suggested is a good start, but the problem is it's a very common look for "wrestling pastor gimmick." My advice would be to keep the dress pants and boots, but instead of a dress shirt, see if you can invest in some kind of singlet to wear that covers the whole torso area (not just straps) with a custom reverend collar. That's what I'm envisioning, at least.
Maybe you can look into getting boots that aren't just black ... perhaps white, or black with red trim?

While most backyarders don't go beyond that level, there are plenty of legit workers out there who started in the backyard and went on to become good wrestlers. CM Punk is an example many people use...
I know that there is some who've done it, but the chances of that are slim to none. Partly the phenomena that Backyard Wrestling was back in 1998-2002 is to blame, as it was seen in a very negative light and it's still looked down upon today. I was doing Backyard Wrestling for 4 years before doing the Indies for two. I wanted to go to ROH but seeing as my body is fucked now, that isn't a possibility. My experiences weren't all as I thought it'd be and I have nothing to show for it besides bones that can barely do shit. I hope he doesn't share the same fate. I hope he can succeed but let's be real here,it ain't gonna happen.
Just as a quastion is Kevin Owens attire not conciderbly normal gear I mean he is wearing widend out shorts with a rubber layer attached to it and knee and kickpads beneth it yes he is wearing a shirt but that shouldend hinder his flexibilty to much

+Tuomas Kylmakoski Depends on your definition of "massive". You need to be able to withstand the abuse your body takes with running, jumping and bumping in every match, but you can protect your body from the shock by building muscle...add some padding, as it were. And after a while, bumping becomes the easiest part of a match!

My province has an age law that requires me to be 18 (I'm currently 17) for me to train.
Now, the gimmick I had in mind was sort of an anti-face inspired a lot by the Black Metal scene in Norway.
The question I have to ask is: Should I go through with wearing facepaint if my gimmick is themed around a visuel based music style? I know guys like Vampiro and Sting used them all the time. But is facepaint reccomended for good gear?
If the facepaint fits the gimmick, go for it!

Hey Brian. So I'm a bit too young to get into the wrestling business, but I'm already coming up with an idea for a gimmick. Basically it's the stereotypical narcissist, but with a twist. You see I'm not a mountain like say Mabel, but I am a bit chubby like Kevin Owens. So my gimmick would be a DELUSIONAL narcissist, a man who believes he is the sexiest thing alive when really he's just average looking and constantly uses heel tactics to win matches. People would give this guy heat because there he is strutting and calling them all fat losers when he himself is kind of fat. Do you think that sounds good? And of course I plan on doing some cardio training so I can actually GO in the ring, but I've always had trouble losing weight, so I decided to embrace it for the gimmick.

Ok Brian so I've seen how to get started and what to wear my question is how do you get yourself out there and known enough to be in the majors so to speak. Also could you go in depth with me on finding a wrestling school I currently live in Arkansas and I've researched for schools around here and have found nothing I'm a big guy at 6'8" 436 lbs I currently attend college at the local university and work as a bouncer. I work out to stay fit ( I think I remember you touching on that in the other video) but I'm really trying to find a school close by and I'd appreciate it if you got back to me with answers to the few questions I have. Thank you.
Expand your search when you finish college bro. If your really that big then you could look great in the ring so I'm sure you'll succeed as long as you do well enough in training
I'm sorry but I can think of many professional wrestlers that have worn this type of clothing and we're very influential in this sport, names such as raven, the sandman, stone cold steve austin just to name a few. I know I just rounded off names from companies like ECW and WCW but they we're wrestlers known for wearing jeans and a t-shirt, hell even rowdy roddy piper wore a kilt to the ring, so I'm not saying I totally disagree with what you are saying because I know you are talking majorly wrestlers that wrestler for backyard wrestling promotions but just look around the sport and art of pro wrestling is always changing and evolving

exactly, he wore a zeus inspired shit that you could pick up for 5-10 dollars and was still able to be a world and tag team champion
+Macauley Little Austin never wrestled in street clothes unless he was in a street fight or something, and even then that was pretty rare, and Piper only wore a kilt to the ring, but he wrestled in trunks. And I'm not just talking about people in the backyard, I'm talking about people in the legitimate indy feds that aren't wearing the proper gear. Yes, there will always be exceptions, but they are such a slim minority in the grand scheme of things. I just want people to have some respect for wrestling, is all.

+Wrestling With Wregret my apologies just trying to prepare myself because after high school this is my career I have been watching since 2005 with a stroke and Brian damage in the hospital at the age of 5 and I've been studying the business ever since and it's nice to see someone giving out important information to help people wanting to be wrestlers
+SinSlasher505 While I appreciate your passion, I strongly recommend that you focus on getting an education of some sort to fall back on. Very few people are able to make wrestling their career so I would advise not putting all your eggs into this basket!
How about a video or something about how you don't have to do extreme moves or use weapons to make it into the business. Personally, I can't stand backyard wrestling or death matches or any of the extreme CZW stuff. I like technical wrestling and just a good story being told. I feel like people who start out feel like they have to literally kill themselves to draw a crowd, and that's not it at all. I would much rather see a 5 minute match with some good moves between two people with good chemistry, than 20 minutes of two people hitting each other with light tubes and slamming each other onto thumb tacks.
+Frus77sh I'm not one to bash an entire genre of wrestling because everyone has their preferences as to what they like to see. The old ice cream analogy, as it were. That being said, wrestlers have a choice as to what style they want to work, and they hopefully understand that working any kind of style comes with an inherent risk, so if they wish to become hardcore wrestlers, that's their prerogative.
