    Quenching is for hardening, and you can't harden mild steel like that or at all because it doesn't have the correct carbon content. Tempering is to slightly reduce the hardness so that a blade is not brittle, but again since you can't harden mild steel, there is no point in trying to temper it.

    • @cvbpo
      @cvbpo Před 6 lety +1

      Stephen McKee well being it not really a blade u wont to use at all dont think it matters to much

    • @justinmattox5000
      @justinmattox5000 Před 6 lety +1

      Some mild steels can be quench hardened, you just need a fast cool liquid like brine

    • @andrettibark
      @andrettibark Před 6 lety +3

      The brine thing (or the "superquench") gives nominal results at best. It enlarges the grain structure, but doesn't really harden it. And tempering it to make it less brittle undoes all the work you did really quick.

    • @scurvybill
      @scurvybill Před 6 lety +1

      You can harden mild steel, just not to the extent of higher carbon steels. Steel 1020 can vary between 65 ksi to 90 ksi depending on the heat treatment. www.metalsuppliersonline.com/Research/Property/metals/819.asp
      Not to mention performing any heat treatment would definitely help this sword, as welding causes a bunch of dicked up internal stresses.

    • @blargkliggle1121
      @blargkliggle1121 Před 5 lety +1

      @@andrettibark I agree, the only thing that could work is case hardening. But even that is iffy because the consistency of the metal is going to be all out of whack. Honestly, the only thing that makes sense would be to treat it like a bronze sword and smack it back into shape after you use it.

  • @John_Conner222
    @John_Conner222 Před 6 lety +2

    I love this look. It looks like a fantasy viking or something a demon reached into the lava and pulled it out. Not sure how well the sword handle will hold up under use but I would recommend next time to make a tang for the blade if you are going to do more of these unless they are just for fun or show. As for a name for the sword I would call it the Soul of Surtr (or just Surtr). For the axe I would call it the Fate of Fenrir (or just Fenrir). Would love to see a hammer in this style of work to match the two you have made.

      Many vikings spoke latin and later converted to latinised/christianised culture. Many of the scandinavians who settled in Normandy were ex-vikings who were employed as mercenaries by the frankish emperor.
      Also, all european swords of the period had pretty much the same design; there is no such thing as a "viking" type of sword. Also, many archeological finds of swords used by vikings and other scandinavians were made outside of scandinavia, predominantly in frankia.

      JAIRUS OF ALL the thicker the metal the more you’ve got to turn it up, if you can’t turn it up anymore (like on a 110) then yes it’s normal to preheat the metal.

    You can get a lot better results with your torch if you turn up the acetylene until the flame just leaves the tip, then turn the O2 on until it forms a tight cone. Your flame was not as concentrated as it should have been, so your cut was more jagged. Great work with the build up, it looks really cool.

    Not sure if its just the camera but you got to adjust that torch alittle, if you got acetylene turn the gas on till the smoke just starts to go away, then turn the oxygen on till you get little "fingers" right close to the tip and there all roughly even. Once you got the flame set pull the trigger for the airstream and you should see a perfect even straight line through the flame, if not you need to clean the tip.

    It's mild steel. It doesn't really take a quench unless you case harden it. CZcams has a lot of info on it but the gyst is you make a paste of charcoal flour water and you can also add other junk if you feel so inclined to give just the surface a hardening. The longer it stays In heat the deeper it goes. That's actually a way the Vikings mat have done it. It's been around since the Greeks

    @JAIRUS OF ALL here's a hot (pun intended) tip: You'll cut down on warpage if you account for the tendency of steel to shrink as it cools; best practice when welding on both sides of a weldment is to alternate sides periodically.

    We call the cutting torch the "hot wrench" for a reason. Also, the plasma is here-for to be referred to as the metal un-zipper.

    One thing that might help with shrinkage and such is if you put a descent tack on each side and then continue on with welding

  • @randominternetprofile8270

    First video I've seen of yours. Great presentation. I liked the imperfect, raw style of the sword and the technique you used with the welder. I'm new to metal working and don't weld, so have never seen that before.

    Here's a tip for using the 2 piece cutting torch, get a straight piece of steel and put it along the line you want to cut and drag the side of the cutting tip along the straight steel, and don't got horizontal. Pull the torch towards yourself

    I'm partial to the axe, loved the way it turned out. That being said the sword looks nifty.
    "The Penetrating Weld" has a nice ring to it.

    you can use propane the acetylene regulator screw into the propane tank that when you add oxy its at 5000 degrees acetylene burn around 7 but you need to change the tip on your torch

    I think that it would look dope with a long handle. I would like to see the amount of leverage you could get on each slash

    Also, mild steel can technically be quench hardened... however, it's still really soft. The edge will roll over very easily, like, hitting wood easily.

    As someone who has tried to heat treat mild steel I can say that you would not be able to get mild steel to hold a good edge even if you heat treat it also tempering comes after the quench it actually takes hardness out of the steel so you don't break shit
