I’m so glad she talked about the shrinkage that happens, the struggle of stretching your hair only for it to shrink once it hits humidity is so real for us 4c girls 🤧

It just HAIR. I’ve seen a lot of older Korean and Japanese women wearing afros. A lot of Japanese women chemically straighten their hair. Curly hair is universal.

@@greymatters7039 yes curly hair is universal but there are different levels just like what was shown on the chart which is why this comment specifically mentioned 4c hair and not just curly hair in general(and different racial/ethnic genetics can cause different things to occur even if each person has curly hair. example being white people's scalps with natural curly hair produce a good amount of sebum aka natural moisture and the hair stays hydrated and healthy whereas black people's scalps don't produce alot of oils which is why the girl in the video mentions all the oils and Creams that have to be used to keep our hair healthy and why black people can't wash their hair too often or it'll become dried out, brittle and damaged)
correction: it's not that we don't produce oils but rather that it doesn't travel throughout/down the hair
. And it may be just hair to you but not everyone feels that way and not every culture feels that way. There are some cultures where hair is a big part of the culture and cultural practices. There are plenty of cultures where how you style Your hair and how you wear your hair is tied to ceremonial practices, religious beliefs and even status.
You can both acknowledge that hair isn't a big deal to you and still understand and respect that its important and a big deal to someone else
Native American people don't let people touch their hair because they believe that whatever that person is carrying will be transferred onto them and carried in the hair/braids. Especially if it's negative energy

I just want to add on to what he said at 2:53!
A lot of black people have to learn to style their hair on their own because you can’t trust that a salon will know how to style your hair, so you have to learn to do it yourself. Of course there are some people who know how to style black hair but it’s not very common, and you have to seek stylists out on your own or through word of mouth.
Also, natural curly hair can take a lot of maintenance and work, so if you were to go into a salon every time you needed to do your hair, it would get time consuming and expensive!
This is why I think it’s super cool that she’s so open and willing to teach! And thanks to him for being willing to learn.

You have to find one that specifically specializes in natural hair care or deal with the consequences just like you mentioned. Even then, it’s “at your own risk”. I think this (and the fact that natural hair care can be pricey and time consuming) is the reason many of us do our own hair for the most part. Curly hair is super versatile and can stay in hair styles for days when wrapped and taken care of. I’d also like to note wearing Afro styles and puff styles can be damaging to the ends if you do them a lot. That’s why we use protective styles (braids and hair wraps to protect our ends) and wrap up our hair at night when we go to bed. Love your videos, I’m glad you and the team are so curious about different hair types :)

@@alzahrahabdullatiff9297 Your question isn’t ignorant💕. We can leave our braids in for 3-4 months depending on the style and how long someone wants to leave their braids in. Most ppl when wearing braids we only put jam on the braids while getting it braided and then put mousse and oils on our hair afterword. Most ppl use Grease, jam, and oils. build up depends on how long you have your braids in now you can wash your hair with braids in but some ppl do not and prefer to just leave the hair alone to let it grow and do what it does and put oils in to help also keep their hair protected. Me personally I do not wash my hair with braids in just bc it takes hella long for braids to dry and I don’t have time but ever black person hair is different that’s why certain products work on some ppl and don’t on others for my hair I get healthier and longer hair when I don’t mess with it while it have braids in( I’m also natural.) Natural hair products honestly depends on you curly pattern and if you have low or high porosity hair as well. Sorry this is long💕💕.

I’m a black woman and ik it can be stressful/anxiety inducing to let others do our natural hair (hence not going to the salon, cause of the fear of someone messing it up & having to do the extra work & possibly weeks to fix it) so I’m glad she was able to let them work on their hair & learn!
More stylists need to learn how to do black hair so we can utilize services like everyone else & be able to treat ourselves & have someone who can have a 360 view & be attentive. For me (and ik other black naturals) we know the back of our hair is harder cause you can’t see as clearly, & even using mirrors is trouble & time consuming so you have to settle with it probably looking not as defined as the front!
But dang her Korean was great, & again I love her want & ability to let them learn because it’s such an interesting & diverse hair texture!

I love this video and all the positive comments! To someone's earlier point, this is a beautiful exchange of cultures! Also her Korean sounds amazing! I hope as I continue to learn I can be as proficient as her. Two things that I want to comment on as 4c thick hair person, knowing that this video is exposing people to kinky-coily hair who may have limited knowledge. We can all benefit from a professional trim at least once a year. With 4c hair it sometimes can be misleading the actual damage our hair is going through with styling, manipulation and detangling. The method she discussed is a good alternative when you cannot get to a professional stylist , but it's always good to have someone really look at our ends from front to back, either through shaping the hair in its natural state or through straightening the hair and then trimming. And when you encounter knots as she did don't rip the hair apart. As someone who use to do that, that technique can be very damaging. What we heard was the hair likely breaking or splitting. When I encounter knots like that rather than ripping the hair, a little water, a wide tooth comb and professional hair shears to remove the knot works well with less damage. Thank you Kiu and Merlia!

Yes I was nervous as well clicking on this video but you can tell she is a very intelligent lady who has a lot of confidence in her self and her hair. This is the type of 4c representation I love to see ❤️❤️ Marlia if you're reading this I think you did an amazing job

One of my friends is Korean and her hair is naturally curly, almost like type 4 and nobody knows how to deal with the hair type so she has just been straightening her hair all her life..hope more hair stylists in Korea learn to take care of different types of hair! Thanks for the video!

There are a lot of SE Asians with curly hair so maybe one of her ancestors came up to Korea many many years ago. I knew a girl who’s also Korean with curly hair but more like “Hawaiian” hair where it isn’t 4c curly.

I loved this for so many reasons. I just started learning Korean 3 months ago and I have a 4B/4C hair type. Merlia, you are communicating beautifully and gave me something to aspire to. It was heartwarming to see the authentic appreciation of cultural exchange. Props to Kiu for providing the open and safe environment that allowed for these three beautiful souls to not only give us coily hair lessons, but also provide sociology lessons as well. I wish you all well.

9:10 As a person with the same hair texture I want to say that there ARE people who dislike others touching their hair and there ARE people who don't mind it. I personnally don't minde it at all, I actually like it but be aware that it might piss off some other people, so make sure to ask before!
