CT in the house !
I was never into VW always into Chevys cheap power
But these guys seem nice and light to work on
I could just watch this all day...even at work lol
Thanks man!
I bought a vw van that had a terrible clanking noise from the engine. I couldn't wait to pull it apart to see the cause. Two hours later I was looking at a crankshaft that was broken in half inside the centre main bearing, at the same angle as the oil drilling. The clanking was caused by one half under load, followed by the other half as the cylinders fired.. This was in Australia, and I knew the driver, he was always labouring the engine, which caused the break. But I had never seen or heard of a broken VW crankshaft before.
Your videos are always fantastic. As an amateur engine builder, I've been so happy to go over your engine build vids again prior to my attempts. Alas, I wish I had access to a shop/tools/machining you have access to. There's nothing remotely around me so I'm left to my own learn from books and videos!
Can’t believe you use ultra grey, Porsche and motorcycle manufactures use an anaerobic sealant for engine case half’s. Honda and Yamaha have an excellent product. I have used permatex right stuff which is very good as well.
Im just watching this like "cha-ching"..huge money to build motors like this..I have a very similar built 2110 and it was about 7k from case to carbs.
That's a serious lift.
Yep... AIN'T IT JUST AIN'T IT 😎
Love 90.5 mm cylinders; great for street motors. 1776 or 2110 are the best. And CT is in da house!! Thanks for sharing, sir!
I always enjoy the engine builds! That 2110 looks pretty bad ass.
Street car motor track night. All sounds good to me. I should have mine all together soon for a track night.
Good stuff Darrin.
Me and my husband are both volkswagen lover here in Philippines... I uploaded also the volkswagen engine he rebuild... And I am so proud of him....... God bless and keep up the good work sir!
Mike Fn Garage recommended me your channel. Subscribed!
Darrin!!!! it's so awesome that you're back teaching us again....more type 4 content would be great as well...thank you SENSEI!!
I enjoyed watching this video for myself at nearly 60 years of age it’s been many years since i’ve had a VW Aircooled engine opened up. ironically my last one was a early 70s Beetle in 1984 ish i bought a crappy Bug that was running on 2 Cylinders it drove across town home. at Midnight and with a Flashlight we saw twomPlugs dangling on their a wires out of the Heads the next day i discovered those Heads were stripped out and my local VW Repair shop sold me my very first set of Heliocoils and told me how to install them which i did the motor was a Leaky one and i pulled it to put in a newcGasket set that came fromBrazill complete with 4 Pistons and New Rings for $117.00 everyone told me they were Junk and not last that Bug was one i gave my little Sister as a College Car she beat the hell out of it and drove it for a few years then gave it back to me running years later i pulled the motor and gave the Rusted body and Pan to a ScrapYard and from what I know that motor is still running in its 4th or 5th Air Cooled VW over 35 years later FYI the VW Enthusiasts in my Home town is a small group and a few. oth them i still keep in touch with and have given me tabs on that Engine Block for funsies i grew up,inSouth Florida and we had a Business there called The Beetle Shop that had a large group of Bikers working there and that shop built high performance Motors for the localKit Car Company Classic Motor Carraiges that built a lot of the nicer Porsche Speedster Replicas using Type 1 VW Pans and engines that shop bored and Stroked the Blocks and for years they used a Shortened Transporter Bus as their Shop,Truck it was so rediculously shortened the People in the Front Seats could touch the rear Window from that position it was made to,look like.a Surfer Bus and i’ve seen them pull the front Wheels off the ground from a dead Stop ! We had that and a old Fiberglass Boat someone put on a Modified VW Pan that has Survived into a Marketing Tool for acRea Estate Company Locally i saw it 20 years ago and it looked like it could be a runner but was used as a Static display Vehicle only it was Parked in A Restaraunts Parking area with a lot of Traffic goin by it daily
I just started watching you vids,I think you are THE VW MAN, THE MAN. Thank You very much for all your VW help over the years. I'm also glad you recovered from your health scar.
Thanks for the video looking to purchase a bug over the weekend, first in over 20 years.
VALCO makes a squeezer for small silicone tubes that works great .
Darrin, Love the build. Looks really good. Thanks for sharing...
Great video Darrin! Thanks for all the great VW knowledge.
Another great video. Thank you!
Can't wait for the type 4 build.
VW Darrin..one of the BEST.👍😎
Thanks man!
Getting ready to build a s/p 2110 for my bay window and your videos are invaluable. Thank you for your excellence
I always enjoy your engine build videos !
Big Thumbs Up Mr. Darren!
Thanks Buck!
I love this thank you Darwin and CT
That looks like its gonna make some power!
Really like what ur doin man. Appreciate your drive👍🌄🇺🇸
I've always used gasket sench you know the one with the girl on the can and the dauber on the cap never had any leaks or any problems getting the case apart later great stuf
Thank you for sharing your build. Although, I do have several questions. 1. Self sealing nuts are not designed the way you installed them, 2. I noticed that you did not adjust the torque wrench for the smaller studs and allow for the nylock added frictional torque value to add to the final torque for the 8mm nuts. 3. During your torquing of the main studs, I noticed the torque wrench clicked, yet you went further after the click. Is this a standard practice in building a VW engine? My other question was the head studs were not installed during the assembly of the case halves. Are you installing them after the case is torqued? I would be worried during installation of the head studs might push any metal chips through the inside of the engine. Is that something not to be overly concerned about, or am I over thinking things? Thank you.
Awesome job
Watching 👀👍👍
Talk to brothers machine in California they build alot of type 4 stuff. They have good stuff they did my heads for my 2 liter
What a nice, clean, and organised set-up you have here, looks great!
Love your videos Darrin, been a big fan for years 👊🤙
Always I learn new tips with your videos. Thanks for share us!
I’m going to do two builds soon. One stock 1600 and one performance build. I’m excited to play with these little engines.
Dam you get around, Dangar Marine and vwdarrin 😁.
Sweet video
Great Video!
Thanks Andy!
That Ultra Grey is great stuff..its factory spec on my Toyota oil pan..vibration resistant.😎
Great info. Thanks Darrin and CT.
Thanks Terry!
Great video! CT I thought you were going to lose a finger when the 2 halves went together. 😂. Oh you guys decided to get ac after I visit. I see how it is. No worries 😉. One day I will come down to build my Super 1600 with Darrin and hopefully you. Take care guys!
HAHA! Thanks man!
I could watch you put motors together all day long. Great video 👍
I had a 2275 built and the guy painted it black , claim's it helps disapate heat. He said Harley Davidson does the same thing ?
Wondering if anyone else has done this ?
Track night when it cools down.... sounds good to me.
Great info guys. 👍
Thanks man!
Thanks VWdarrin for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for watching!
@@vwdarrin sir, do you have an email address or contact information you share? I have a VW (1600) engine I would like to ask questions about. My email is
Dnshorter123@gmail.com
Any help is greatly appreciated
great stuff D
Oh yeah
Great video for someone who knows very little!! I subscribed 🤙🏼
Darrin, I’m interested.
I get ten points because I saw you put the cam plug in backwards and then smoothly switch it. LOL
I think this first time seen with flywheel installed, before the case half together.
easier to rotate and check things during assembly
Hallow Mr.machaniker your work and your Workshop Are very cleaning......Amazing sir.....
Cool good video
Thanks!
I have one of those same kind of A/C's in my office. There cheap to run compared to the central A/C.
I usually cut a 45 degree tip on gasket maker tubes, comes out more evenly/quicker.
Darrin, have you ever thought about doing a 40 hp with big bore kit and 1600 rocker? I hear its a good set up for single port stockish motors.
Darrin have you tried applying sealant with acid brush I've had great results with acid brush
If you don't get those dowel pins in the main bearings lined up just right, the motor will run about 10 miles, then suffer an "unscheduled disassembly"
It's great to see u dude great video
Thanks Jim!
Please, please, please show how you set rocker geometry for this motor! Thanks Darrin
Great video learn so much just watching and listening to you talk and build. Question do you set static compression on big cam motors or do you set it to dynamic compression.
Hi,
Thanks for posting your builds- helps for first timers . To enquire, is loctite high temp silicone any good for sealing the cases?
There is a gentleman in Strasburg Ohio. That builds VW engines.I will try to get his number.
@Joseph Andrade ?
Gifted hands
😍ilike to pieces main bearing… but did you put 2 pins in to side of case (main bearing dwal pin
Hello, my name is Mehmet Turan Öztürk, i live in Istanbul Sarıyer Türkiye and i watch your videos with interest and appreciation, i am not an automobile or engine mechanic, but as far as i know from my sincere friends who do this job, they use classical gaskets in engine blocks, but you use liquid gasket, doesn't this cause any problems in the future? Thank you and wish you happy days.
Hi Darrin, Have you ever rebuilt a flat 6 on a 911 or like on a corvair? It would be a cool video to see
Definitely looking for a new motor for my beetle, gotta tear apart the old one. Sat for a couple years and when I got it started again, oil and smoke were coming out the exhaust. Definitely like your stuff. What do you charge to do a build like that?
So wish I was closer. I’d be haunting you to build me an engine
Darrin, I believe the 13mm huts torque down to 14 ftlbs from the 40horse on up, not 18 ftlbs -- unless you mean 18 just for the aluminum cases?
I still miss Tite Seal.
Nice video. I like the engine build shop and the neatness of the parts layout. Just curious Darren what county do you live in. I'm over in polk county southwest of Disney.
I've got a 1970 karman ghia
Where did you source those sealing nuts for the main studs?
Hay Darren what’s your thoughts about a stroker 82 in a stock mag case thanks buddy
Hey Darrin. Doing a similar 2110 build. What cam do you recommend with Panchito 044's or Empi GTV's and 48 IDF's!!!
Hey what is your professional opinion on the K style thick wall 92 barrels. 92 at the case and 94 at the head
Dont forget the orings for the coolant passages😲
lol
When are you going to post Part 2
What do you use in the cylinder base gaskets
very professional clear good sounding instrutional video. obviously the end play was set the first build, but Curious about the rear main. Do you just make sure the rear main is set all the way into its resting spot on 1st half and the 2nd half just drops right on? Thanks again for all the great vids.
What would you recommend for 1958 beetle type 1 sedan, to beef it up a little? Thanks Mike Fiaschetti
Hello darrin, in this video I notice that you only put the o rings of the case in only 4 studs and not in the middle, I have an aluminum case and the person put the 6 o rings, right now my motor has a leak in the studs in the middle of the lower part, I ask, only the o rings go in the corners, thanks,
You missed the bolt and nut at the rear of the engine behind the flywheel
82 x 90.5...why not bigger if you are using bubble top...just bought one looking for a stout combo..suggestions??
What is this gasket joint? aren't you support to put anerobic gasket here???
The type 4 valves guides info. Ask Ray on thesamba.com or shoptalkforums.com where to get oversize guides.
been watching your vids and have stock motor that i wan more out of for daily summer driver seeing its Illinois. need help
I miss your videos Darrin, I wish you would do more regularly.. Anyway, I was thinking about a 2180 build, with a 82mm stroke - do I need to have the camshaft relieved or not? I wish things for engines werent as pricey, but I refuse to go to a watercooled ie a Subaru - its just not a VW no more plus the ground clearance ive seen with the sump riding so low is terrible! hope to se you soon bud
I have heard that if I build a 2110 and put it in a swing axle trans that it will strip 3rd and 4th gear is this true?
Are you still looking for seats for your 66 low back seats : I have a pair
I want a Karmen Ghia too... :( RE that engine you were building what kind of price (ballpark) is it? For a slightly more than stock engine (say 60 to 70 HP vs 40) what do you recommend?
Darrin. Do you do ant oil modifications to a high H.P engine cases ?
So I’m a old vw guy I am from the 90s I’m a modern day guy that’s plays with supercharged cars but I still own a 65 Convertible VW beetle that I bought 22 years ago and now. The cars going to paint soon as because I need my beach cruiser back. So the question is way back I bought a Fuel injection block with no provision for a fuel pump is this a better block to build a More reliable motor?
I am interested in an engine like this one! Don’t have to have such RAD heads though. I have tried emailing you several times but it gets kicked back as undeliverable. Do you have a website? Great videos.
Do you know det ring size on 90,5mm piston? 1,5x2x4 or 2x2x4?
I'm doing a rebuild on a 1600 .
I want a little more power nothing crazy just a little. Make it sound beefy
What do u recommend?
How much will the used 1600 be and will it be a super 1600?
Darrin, trying to build an engine with that camshaft you gave me, however I purchased an aftermarket cam gear and the bolts provided are larger than what the cam is drilled for...not sure what to do because I want to use that cam you gave me.
i can machine the gear for you , are i probably have some cam bolts that will , just stop buy , be here all weekend
