Boston is playing like they have 5 players at each position at any time. 5 guys that can play power forward, shooting guard, center, point guard and small forward. They have a skilled and deep enough bench that they can rest starters for 20 minutes a game. This is a well rounded team right now. I think Red Auerbach would be pleased the way the Celtics are playing. A Red quote, "Individual honors are nice, but no Celtic has ever gone out of his way to achieve them. We have never had the league's top scorer. In fact, we won seven league championships without placing even one among the league's top 10 scorers. Our pride was never rooted in statistics."

When people hate on Luka for handling the ball too much, I want them to look at the game first and then comment. When his teammates miss often he is not going to risk losing a game. He will then be a scorer and not a playmaker. Kyrie was good but he also has bad nights, Hardaway is utterly bad this season, and that are all his options. Lively was fantastic with 100% from the game, but he is a rookie, you can't blame him for nothing. Excellent breakdown as always! Godly content!

Nah. He does handle the ball way too much. To look at one or two games as evidence that he doesn’t is foolish and shortsighted. If he wants to win anything of significance, he’s going to need them to contribute. It’s difficult to establish a rhythm when you get few touches and you’re not sure when you’ll get those touches! That’s the main issue!

My take watching the Mavs all season long, and especially last night: Kidd needs to get fired for his awful rotation. They have the pieces for championship contention, its the coach. Gafford needs to play 20mpg instead of Maxi Kleber to provide rim protection and lob threat. Luka needs to hog the ball more and orient his scoring more in the post where he is literally unstoppable. Any guard guarding him is a mismatch, he bullied Jrue, White, Jaylen and Tatum all game long there. His fadeaways in the post go in 70% of the time, and when he fakes and lay it in, it'll either go in with a foul, or not but still 2 shots at the FT. When operating in the paint, make sure to have kyrie on the strong side for an easy wide-open 3 if double teamed.
When Luka is benched, Kai should always take more iso pick n roll, mans a magician w midrange and 3s after pick n roll. When he drives, he can make plays for others but he needs to be more aggressive and possessive of the ball.
Most importantly, give THJ's minutes to DJJ, THJ is a defensive liability with horrible shot selection. You cannot put this man in when Luka and Kyrie are in. DJJ can shoot decent and defend, as well as slash threat like PJ washington, needs to play more minutes.
Underrated players are Josh Green and Exum who hustle and glue the team. It is so obvious when they are in, Kyrie and Luka dont expend their stamina as much on the court because they cover them so much on every facet, from defending to rebounding, loose ball, and bringing the ball up the court.
    My rotation:
Kai, Luka, Green, PJ and Lively starting, with Lively subbed w Gafford (sometimes Maxi), PJ and Green with DJJ, and Kai and Luka w/ Exum, Green and sometimes THJ. Kai or Luka will always be in the game.

HOWEVER, Luka is probably the best scorer in the league and last night he had an even better than average night. The Celts played good defense all night and he just scored anyway. He's just that good. It's like when Dame Lilliard or Tatum is really feeling it. They are going to score on anyone. That said, the greatness of Luka, without much help, turned out to be 28 points worse than the scary machine that the Celtics have become. Anyone who has played organized basketball knows its very hard to stay in rhythm playing alongside someone like luka.
To those who dont play ball. Theres a huge difference between just touching the ball and feeling it and dribbling goes a long way when you finally get a chance to shoot.
As steve kerr himself said. As a roleplayer from the bulls he felt a sense of being involved just by touching and passing the ball which in turn he would put a lot more effort on defense. The bulls run a system where you dont need that high of an IQ. You just need to study and master the system to know where to pass instinctually.
    The mavs dont have that.
Not to mention. You have to cover for luka defensively.
The best example of this is this game itself and the player who played for both teams porzingis.

    • @Beeeep24
      @Beeeep24 Před 2 měsíci +7

While u make good points, I have to disagree.
If you’ve played organized basketball before you know that if you’re playing against a team that has a significant talent advantage, then the ball should, more often than not, be in the hands of your team’s best player either playmaking for teammates or trying to score.
The Mavs (besides Luka, Kyrie, and sometimes Tim Hardaway) generally speaking are not great at creating their own shot. Somebody needs to create an open shot for them. Now sure, it’s Luka’s job to ensure that his teammates stay in rythem and don’t get cold. But I believe he does do a good job of doing that most of the time.
Luka tried to get his teammates going in the first quarter and all second half but they were just missing shots. Which lead him to taking tough shots. Which he made most of.

Tell me you won't watch Luka without telling me you don't watch Luka. He is always pass first, but eventually if people start bricking he has no choice but takeover in order for them to stay in the game. There are only so many bricks you can witness before deciding "fine I guess I have to score now"
There was a stat floating around last year about the Mavs bad win record when Luka scores 35+, no SHIT, it's because when he's scoring 35+ it's because others are bricking. The entire team needs to be playing well for more wins.

It wasn't all him on defense. They kept leaving 3 pt shooters open to cheat toward a double team. Even after Boston destroyed them the first 3 quarters, they kept doing it. That's a coach problem. The first time someone does that (even Luka) he should get pulled until the problem stops happening.

You can't "stop" those players, you can only limit their efficiency. So assuming your numbers are right, probably 50% of those points came while being challenged effectively and they just made difficult shots.
That's not him costing his team 30 points because no matter how great anyone played, at least 20 of those points was going to occur anyway. You would literally have to study the game film to break down the number of open looks people got because of defensive lapses from him and even then, some of those wouldn't have been preventable.
Interestingly, Boston has one of the best defenses in the league and players like Tatum and Brown are the among the best defensive players at their positions....and still Luka put up a 35 pt triple double. So.....

@@SDesWriter The thing is, if you're being matched up against Brown or Tatum a majority of possessions, they are hunting you as a liability defender. Also, Tatum and Brown may be un-guardable, but the effort Luka showed in both matchups against Boston (I follow primarily the Celtics so I can only speak on them) was terrible. We kept hunting him and drove past him easily as Luka does a terrible job of keeping drivers in front of him. Now barring Celtics starters, the Celtics bench were doing the same thing. I saw Pritchard get around Luka with ease a couple of times; although, I don't think it resulted in points because of help defense. Point is, he does cost them on defense. Now, people will say the "steals", put steals only prove you're good at reading passing lanes, not actually defending. They'll also say "post-defense", but Luka gets beat by players driving a majority of the time, not posting. Again, brilliant offensive player; but he does too many things that I think it's a detriment. I think if he can put more effort in creating a off-ball game + put more effort on defense due to expending less energy on offense, he can be so much better.
I like Luka, do I like him better than Tatum? No. But I don't want him to turn out like Harden. Everything is subjective, and honestly with how the Mavs are run, I hope he leaves soon. The team should be built to cover luka's flaws. Mavs aren't doing that.
The Jason Kidd comment wasn't me speaking on what I know, but based of off other Mavericks fans and what I saw last night. Such as why are you running a 4 guard lineup against such a tall/lengthy team like the Celtics?
At the end of the day, just my 2 cents.

i think this can be easily reduced to 3 main points:
    1. having 1 or more net negative defensive players on the floor compromises your defense. this is the something the celtics dont have so they can easily load up, stunt and recover, etc at luka. take away luka and the mavs engine breaks down. this is what happens to heliocentric/star player induced systems. see harden, james on the rockets.
    2. the celtics play team ball akin to the spurs teams of old. take away one guy and the offense doesnt break down. the others keep it going. everybody is empowered to read, react and playmake unlike the mavs where only 1-2 players do that. this also means everyone on the celtics stays engaged on offense instead of standing around in the 3 point line waiting for the primary playmaker to pass them the ball (at least for the starters).
    3. luka's not going to win nor get the MVP respect he deserves until he realizes he needs to do less. this is what JT realized. learn to give the game what it needs. uplift your teammates and make them better. this doesnt mean just creating easy shots for them. its about turning them into threats. turning them into decision makers who can playmake. he's not going to win either until he contributes more off-ball either. this means defense, screen assists, deflections, acting as a decoy and using his scoring gravity to let others create off mismatches (ala steph), etc.
this is what teams realize easily against the mavs. take away luka or take away his teammates (turn luka into a scorer) and they falter. the mavs system is predictable. blame it on kidd or blame it on luka. everyone knows the possession starts and "ends" with luka. he decides if he shoots or passes the ball to someone who will shoot. there's no secondary creation or initial action where luka is off-ball. everyone also realizes that luka is a weak link on defense. even Crypto-P wanted to go at him. that tells you how bad/lazy he is on that end. And no, it's not about Luka's physical limitations. Sam hauser turned from a bad defender to a good defender in a couple of years. its about energy, effort and "thinking" the game on that end.
so to summarize: good team>1 great player.

    • @udishomer5852

Tatum didn't make anyone into a playmaker or decision maker, he is just not a playmaker himself and needs good ball handlers around him.
The Celtics somehow managed to get this incredible roster put together and have everyone healthy and playing great. They are the best team in the NBA. Tatum is NOT the MVP (or close to it).

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 Před 2 měsíci +1

@@udishomer5852 sure tatum didnt make anyone into a playmaker/decision maker. Thats Joe's job. the point here is if tatum was resistant towards that as the franchise cornerstone, then the whole thing falls apart. Thats why it didnt work for them the last few seasons and its working extremely well for them now. Sacrifice, the willingness to do less/give what the game needs and having less usage/touches/time per possession while focusing on the less glamorous side of the ball such as defense. Him not throwing a tantrum for not getting his shots or holding the ball as much is how others such as white and JB develop into better playmakers/decision makers. If he hogged the ball like other superstars, then their whole "best team" doesnt work. Put someone else such as Luka or dame on their team and it doesnt work. It has to be a player who's willing to play off-ball/sacrifice numbers. Kawhi for example would work.
As for MVP, that depends on how you define MVP or what is most valuable. I value the "best player on the best team" and defense over stats-padding. Winning (and games played so embiid doesnt count) is a gatekeeper for me before we even get to looking at the stats. Anyone whose team isnt even the top 3 in their conference doesnt even deserve to be in the convo IMO. so yeah JT is close for me. Is he MVP? no. Because in that top 5-6 team group of best players where i now look at the stats, he doesnt put up numbers as much as others. Hes in my top 3. My MVP is jokic.

Tatum had 32 more efficiently than Luka and he actually plays defense. In your video you keep saying Luka did everything possible but there's one integral thing he doesn't do. He doesn't play defense well at all. Literally any player on the Celtics could score on him, he's a liability. Tatum isn't weak at all on either side of the ball, and he playmakes just doesn't get assists since Celtics are a pass 3 times and shoot instead of a catch and shoot type of team.

Celtics fan. Luka is more of an MVP candidate than Tatum. So is SGA and Jokic. I don’t say this begrudgingly because Tatum himself said that what matters is winning. And our team wins more when the wealth is shared and the individual is de-emphasized. I know that Tatum is playing amazing. But the one thing that really impressed me this year was his leadership. His clear statement that the team is what matters. I’m not saying that Luka or Joker or SGA don’t believe this. They surely do. But they are just much more important on their team

couldn’t have said it better .. as a Celtics fan & Tatum being my favorite player I can’t agree more .. like with all due respect I hate the fact that because Tatum is prioritizing the team more than his individual accomplishments is what’s hindering his I guess “ MVP “ credentials .. like let’s be real if Tatum needed to drop 40 every game then he would try his best to do so but we don’t need him to do that to win .. the mavs need big games from Luka because his supporting cast is so inconsistent & you don’t know if they’re going to show up ona game to game basis .. Jokic is just Jokic , like I mean you can’t really argue with your center giving you 20-30 pts, 10+ Rebs & 10+ assists .. SGA is just a demon .. like I love his game & how he just gets to his spots but I feel like Tatum beats SGA when it comes to MVP just from a stand point of what your personal MVP requirements are .. some people it’s what you mean to your team .. some it’s the best player on the best team so in all honestly I wouldn’t really be upset if Tatum doesn’t win it but I wouldn’t really respect anyone winning it other than Tatum because I feel that the goal post is moved so much on a year to year basis

When people talk about how he doesn't make his team better, I want to show them this video.. he finds them, but he can't shoot for them too.. they miss sooooooo many open shots, that he has to basically take the game over because he loses trust in his shooters.. if he had a consistent 3pt shooter, he would be averaging 15 assists a game.. He has lost any and all trust in THJ, who is supposed to be the third scorer on this team.. He has more trust in his big men now, so of course they are eating at a high volume.. Luka can absolutely make his team better, but they have to be able to hit the open shots he creates for them..

The thing that these spread offense teams havent caught up to yet is they still have volume shooters as their sharp shooters. Guys like Luka have to be surrounded by sharp shooters not volume shooters catching and shooting on the wings and corners. If this keeps up Kyrie should be leaving (no reason to stay if hes not eligible for a max deal.) and Hardaway should be asking out also. Look how many ppl wanted out of dallas. Watching him play its easy to see he wont get far, snd since hes been s pro since 15 i wonder if his shelf life is shorter because of it. Mentally can he stay engaged cuz he gave up a chunk of childhood. He doesnt stay in tip top shape so attrition will play a part earlier than expected in my opinion, and be dont play enough defense to warrant him being so ball dominant.
