It's a speed sensor. Very simplistic it works like the optical mouse most of us use, tracking the road so it can measure more accurately speed and distance covered. This sensor works, in conjunction with the GPS that WRC cars have, mostly for the trip computer that co-driver uses and for telemetry.
PLEASE HELP! I always wanted to be in the WRC and I was wondering how to get started like join some scca events or something like that? What sucks is that I live in America but i'm part of a upper middle class family so I guessI have some money to start out.
ive heard that the polo r. is this car road version. but with the 2,0 from the golf and 220bhp and 4wd. nice to see sombody guarding the way theese beast should be made road going. only subaru and mitsubishi made it, ford and citroen never made it. citroen should do the same making a 4wd version for road use of the ds3 racing but with 240bhp
You are probably too young to have known the Lancia Delta HF 4WD, then the Integrale and Integrale Evo, the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, the Toyota Celica GT-Four... all 4WD 2L turbo. Subaru and Mitsubishi are just the LAST two, not the only two. Now, never confuse a World Rally Car with anything road-going. Not the same thing by a mile.

Speed sensors are only allowed in testing. The car in rally trim only has a wheel speed sensor on one of the rear wheels.

They are most probably measuring ground clearance while driving.
