My favorite Mix-A-Lot song.
Egyptian Lover in ~1984, who was one of the very first LA based 'rap' artist, he was also the first west coast artist doing it independently, writing/composing/producing, using 808 drum machine and making the fast 120BPM rap songs, with very sexually suggestive content and lots of heavy breathing!! It was west coast response to the East Coast music like Afrika Baambaata/Soul Sonic Force, and Pretty Tony and Freestyle in Miami, Kraftwerk outta Europe. from 1983-1986, this style of music DOMINATED the clubs.
In 1985, Sir Mix-a-lot first released a 12" vinyl with 3 songs on it that were heavily electro/techno-rap, trying to claim him as the 'Egyptian Lover' of Seattle. 'Let's G', 'Mix-a-lots Theme' and 'I just Love My Beat'. There was also a song called 'Square dance Rap', which was corny, but got the dance floor packed in Dallas Texas in 1985. Then, he released a complete album with 'Posse on Broadway' and some other ish, introduced Kid Sensation....like Egyptian Lover, Mix-a-lot was producing, making his own beats, independent label, then several years later he made 'Baby Got Back', which was a HUUUUUUGE cross-over hit, and if you look on youtube for a video interviewing about that song, he will tell you he made many many millions off of 'Baby Got Back'.
I'm from LA and one of my boys went to high school with him. Met him at a party through my boy.
Nothing but this played in my Camaro for an entire summer....

Mix-A-Lot was a great lyrist. He's definitely Top5 and very underappreciated. No rapper tied their songs together like he did. Each bar is tied in to the verse. Each verse is tied into the song. His songs didn't weren't about just spouting random lines, he brought themes and tied the whole song together collectively. As you said, he was a great storyteller, and he was able to carry his lyrics though. You should check out Testarosa, my personal favorite of his. But other great songs are: Swap Meet Louie, and Put'em on the Glass (probably can't play that video on your channel though). So many good songs. It was a shame that Baby Got Back got so incredibly huge that it was all that he's remembered for. And in the craze of the late 80's, early 90's speaker wars, his songs definitely brought the bass.

I was 7 in 1988 and thought he was reppin the city I live in, Louisville, Kentucky because of Broadway. I'm bored, sitting in a parking lot waiting on my wife to get out of dialysis, so I will tell a quick bit of history in my hometown. We lived in the same area growing up in the 80s, within shouting distance of Churchill Downs. Derby Day is tomorrow. I remember being a little kid thinking this is a great neighborhood. Yeah there was the occasional argument, a break in, but nothing serious..........or so I thought. It wasn't until I got older to learn that in 1983, maybe 6 blocks from where I lived and rode on my big wheel, along with my brother and other kids, there was a robbery of a little clothing store. The lady had been robbed and what I read, she was stabbed to keep from screaming. Apparently robbery was the motive but the creep panicked and killed her as well. No other reason than my belief it's never been good times, there's always darkness where it appears bright. As I said I'm waiting for my wife in a parking lot and although Posse On Broadway takes me back to when I was a little kid in the 80s, the world seemed great, but I believe my mom and dad tried their best to shield us from the darkness. Ironically this crime happened not two miles from Broadway in Louisville, Kentucky. My favorite line in the song is "the JR Ewing of Seattle" because my grandma always watched "Dallas" and "Knots Landing".

You are right though. Seems to me since I would say the late '90s like 98.99. the fun just started going out of the music. Basically to me it kind of lacked soul. There were a few songs here and there. They were pretty good but mostly no and I'm not talking about you know. Just rap but all genres and it seems like this country is pretty much got a stick up. Its butt for the most part back in the '80s we had all kinds of freedom. You know pretty much you could do whatever you wanted and no one would say too much about it. I mean yeah that was problems but not as bad as they are now as far as people versus people. But yeah definitely the fun that's been sucked out of this country in the worst way. I guess I long for the fun. I mean, for example where I live there used to be a festival called the bushwacker festival. Basically a 5K run and then the rest of the weekend people would gather around. Have a good time and drink bushwackers a frozen drink and let's not forget. Spring break was so much better than now cuz even here in Florida they're trying to chase spring breakers away and it's stupid. Yeah you should do that whole album. A lot of bangers on that one
