If you are looking for the Thermostat it is likely in one of these 3 locations.
Depending on the model the placement is slightly different.
The thermostat regulates water flow throughout the engine as it heats up. As temperature increases the thermostat expands / contracts opening a small hole in the gasket. It is critical to proper engine operation.
Where is Evinrude thermostat? - Věda a technologie
Thanks for the video-
I was initially bummed to suspect they were on the bottom- your video confirmed it 😩 lol🤷♀️ 🔧
Yes I am currently not 100% sure the approach I will take. A heat gun was suggested to loosen it. I don't have a heat gun but sounds like a decent idea.
Leeroys Ramblings explains the absolute pain of removing and installing the 1980 ish thermostat in the bottom. But I would LOVE to see a video of the process. He makes it sound like you almost need 3 hands to hold things in place. Anyone have a link to a video?
Any videos of tearing down the 1996 thermostat mine started acting up a few hours ago
Do you know if you have to remove that water jacket layer on the ‘85 (12 bolts) before hitting the head bolts to get at cylinder rings? I’d rather not break a well sealed water unit
Looking at the marineengine website... it looks like you do. I am in the same situation and it really is a poor design. I want to try using a heat gun to get the thermostat free and moving again.
I have a 2010 150 etec check engine light ang ideas?
We're do I but the stat for that 1990 unit the one on left .is there a part number please. Also if the stat is stuck open will the engine want to run on on the choke all the time ??
Simple enough
What is that wire coming off the back of the left side of the engine block to the left of where u pointing. I have the same wire on mine and its not goin to nothing
Over heat sensor.
Bolt on my 90 Evinrude thermostat broke how to get it off do you know
At this point you got to look at bolt removing videos. You may be able to get it fixed, we ran our engine in a bucket filled with a whole bunch of white vinegar and it fixed our thermostat. These thermostat things are super simple devices and they're usually only not working because they get like overly corroded. After we did this bucket cleaning it removed a whole lot of stuff and gunk from the inside of the motor.
Use barnacle buster. Works better than vinegar
Thanks, I will check it out.
lol im the one who snapped the bolt. oops.
Yep, the 1990 style is the best, easiest to service for sure. OMC changed to that crazy style on the right only because sometimes the 1990 style got debris between the thermo/relief valve and the rubber seat, allowing too much water to bypass letting the engine run cold at low speeds.. No big deal though, just pop it out with spark plug socket and clean out the debris. Over engineering at its finest. The older style was horrible for sure.
