- Lily Renee lived an incredible life. In the video I discuss her exciting life that led her to be an unlikely superstar in the Golden Age of comics.
Then we take a look at her artwork, looking for her stylistic tropes, in her best-known feature, Senorita Rio. Rio was a U.S. spy in post-World War 2 South America, hunting down Nazis and other evildoers.

Such an interesting woman, and she's still alive!
There was a panel from an issue of Marvel's 'What The--!?' in which a large piece of machinery is being thrown at a character and the character says "No time to move! Only time to talk about it!" That got a big laugh out of me when I first read it.
Great review. Noticed the Wilhelm scream, funny
I got to hear her speak at a bookstore a few years ago, and another biographical detail that stuck with me: she was in Leeds during the Blitz and consequently "was very good at drawing ruins."
Awesome review. We often overlook the creators from the past to the point where some become forgotten. Generally speaking of course but to me atleast, I didn't know anything about her. Thanks for sharing!
That art is way ahead of its time. Even more than what Eisner, also a trailblazer, was doing, Miss Renee is drawing art that would look in place as recently as the 90s. Imagine what modern inking/coloring techniques would do for those evocative, rich pencils.
Imagine how much of an impact she could have had on what comics look like now if she'd stayed in the game.
Since it's women's history month, curious if you intend to do one of the very woman-centric books floating around like Bitch Planet or Monstress.
Because of a number of factors in my real life I won't be able to cover either of those this month. I wanted to but it's not likely. At some point, though!
skunkape A shame, but that's life.
I definitely love when you do deep dives like this.
I liked the native drawings, that race is beautiful! And I like how each character has their different features ♡ I do understand a bit the fear that at the time some things weren't displayed as properly. But I do think she was soooo ahead of her time, I think she was very professional and had love for her craft ^^
R.I.P. Lily Renee.
Rest in Peace Lily Renee (1921-2022)
Did anyone else notice that Senorita Rio's real name, Rita Farrar, is pretty close to Elasti-Girl's name, Rita Farr? Perhaps it's a simple coincidence.
True Fan Forum I said the same thing
Or homage
Absolutely an amazing Woman, love her Artwork, it would have been spectacular to see Lily doing comics for Marvel and D.C . and other companies of today !
This is one of my favorite episodes.
Very interesting. Thanks Chris!
Excellent video! Very informative!
I keep watching comic tropes and im running out of episodes to watch lol, infotron is hilarious.
This is a great video! I am really impressed by all of your knowledge and the research you obviously do. And thank you for spotlighting such an interesting artist. She really deserves more attention and adulation.
Thank you for watching.
You didn't credit Infotron
Excellent video!
Nice informative review Chris! I'm impressed by Lily's art and the fact that the coloring/printing technology of the time allowed it to be seen as well as it is. And I know exactly what you mean about the super-compressed storylines back then. My personal sweet spot are Bronze/Copper Age stories. Definitely not the generally uncompressed storylines of today. (Recent exceptions are Astro City and Jonah Hex.)
i really enjoy your comic show Lilly Renee is great in every way i love her work and this was very interesting thanks
Great video! :)
Mate I Really Enjoy watching your Comic Books Reviews a Heck a Lot Cheers!😉
She'll be 101 this year!
FREAKING astounding history and
Comic l.r did thanks i need to read this
To quote another great comic CZcamsr: "now they're radioactive, that can't be good!"
I now want to find all of her work
10:03 Now they're radio active, that can't be good! That said, writing "radio active" as two words is not incorrect. The word radioactive comes from a simple description. Materials that are radioactive emit radio waves as they decay - they are radio-active. Here's a paper by Marie Curie, which uses the construction "Radio-active", from 1898: history.aip.org/history/exhibits/curie/discover.htm
Really Nice Art.
Did anyone read Lily Renée, Escape Artist: From Holocaust Survivor to Comic Book Pioneer by Trina Robbins & Art by Anne Timmons?
Yes, that's where I first heard about her! Great book!
What an amazing story. Too bad she quit comics after just a few years.
Sorry to be off topic, but I wanted to recommend people look a bit deeper into the Kindertransport that you mentioned. It has an amazing story all its own, especially Nicholas Winton, one of the men who ran it.
Great essay on a comic artist I previously never heard of!
If you haven't already, would you be willing/able to cover other women cartoonists like Rumiko Takahashi or Jackie Ormes?
Hey! How often do you live stream? I was wondering because I watched last nights stream and I really enjoyed it!
Alex Jones I try to do at least one a week but it depends on how busy I am. I love doing them and chatting with different people so some day I’ll try to establish a regular day and time.
skunkape ok, thank you!

As long as we're talking about female comic book artists, how about some more familiar ones like Ramona Fradon or Marie Severin?
Great video, Chris - deserves far more views. Miss Renee was an amazing talent whose art, in my opinion, far outshines a lot of the dross we had from Marvel and DC in the 90s, as well as the current crop of mainstream artists - I'd much rather see more of Senorita Rio than anything of Safespace and Snowflake! Stay safe, Dude. :)
My old friend, the Wilhelm scream...
Does anyone know of a good way to read these old Senorita Rio comics? Either digital or in print.
Anything more about her life after 1949?
"Your bones are safe" comic tropes chris
Often, back than, the work was pushed out. They had a deadline, and the work had to be done. If the work was good, great, if not, to bad. The same is true today. To many books are just pumped out, and it shows. Also, people are jerks, and people are sensitive. Lily Renee's work was very good, but I imagine she was on her own in the industry, and I don't believe many people had time to improve their work. At the end of the depression, the pulp publishing industry was dynamic, and inovating. To a limited extent, many authors knew each other, and helped each other. It was a great time for the printed word. It was pulp fiction, so the authors were free from the constrains of good taste, and literary merit. Sure, much of the work is dated now, but it was inovative for it's time. Many a short story went from the magizine to the comic book, sadly without being credited.
oh wilhelm scream, i get it
Damn, she was really attractive
👏👏👏👏👍
Rita Farrar is oddly similar to DC’s Rita Farr aka Elasti-Girl
I wish someone whould turn witch characters into the american equivalent of the japanese magic girls. Bewitched, I dream of Jennie, Sabrina the teenage witch, there's a real untapped market here, it has potential.
What are you talking about? Her drawings of natives are spot-on. Have you ever googled a full blooded Australian aborigine? Or native American from south America. What is bad is today's Anime faces that make everyone look European with little pointy noses and chins.
Is it bad? That's how the Japanese want to draw it generally. We should let them draw how they like.
You assess that the comic industry would be mysoginist and that it would be harder for female writer to find their place. Can you prove it?
By the way, to argue that there are more males than females hired proves nothing, since there are more men than women interested in that topic and therefore applying for the job.
Just like there are way more females writers in the women's press.
I just watched this excellent video fir the first time, and it seems Lily Renee passed away just last week. What a fascinating person. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_Ren%C3%A9e
