    ... YES ... been using one of these tools for many years ... very good fine finish and does not 'dig in' ... particularly useful for use on electric motor commutator repair ... downside ... only allows for very 'fine' cuts to be made and makes very fine swarf to clean up ....

    @RollingEasy Před 10 měsíci +1

    The vertical grind I found is easier to do with an old wheel. Gives a slightly smaller curved edge..... And I could not agree more. Its a brilliantly simple tool which gives a mirror like finish. And at .001 for each cut but no more than .002 I've found.

    Gday Steve, I never seen this setup for a lathe, I do have a shear tool I use on the shaper that leaves a beautiful finish but I think I’ll be grinding one up for the lathe now, thanks very much for sharing this mate, cheers

    Many thanks for this.

    Cheers for that. I had seen other videos about them, but I didnt understand how it was working. Your video was a very good explanation of how it works. Also looks promising for taking off that last hundreth of a mm or so when you are looking for a precise finish, that I usually stuff up and take to much!

    Great video Steve. Works somewhat like a skew chisel for wood turning. Definitely will give it a try. Thanks from Tennessee.

      @howardosborne8647 Před 2 lety +1

      As you say that is the very same cutting principle at work as a skew cut chisel.
      These shear cut tools are commonly used on the metal shaper and produce a surface better than surface grinding can achieve.

    I didn't understand how it would work until you used it (not your fault, my problem with spatial and dynamic "envisionment", haha). That looks like an exceptionally useful tool for my little lathe. I have some plastic and nylon I need to turn for fixing stuff at home, and I could not get a good finish on them. I think this is going to do the trick. Thank you for sharing!

    Hi,Steve.I have never got around to making one for the lathe but I do use shear cutting tools of the same principle on my metal shaper. Mr Pete(Lyle Peterson) did a video on the lathe type of shear tool a few months back. I must have a go at grinding a bit of HSS up and give it a go.
