Understanding the Features & Settings on the Tascam Portacapture X8 (Part Two)

- Getting to know all of the inner functions on the Portacapture X8 can be a bit tricky and frustrating. Many menu items are counterintuitive, redundant or simply not very well thought out. Here I'll go over most of the basic settings that you really need to understand and also point out some better methods I've found to use this device in real world film shoots and concert recording venues.

what do you think about using the auto gain ? I normally plug into a power box at a wedding and the DJ goes up and down with the volume ( im going to be using the 32 bit float )
Good idea! I've never tried it like that. I've used it to record a boardroom meeting. With live concert recordings I like a consistent level for mastering in post. Mahalo

Did you ever try the Zoom R4?
No I can't say that I have. Just the Zoom F8-N Pro which I really enjoyed on a film shoot. Last night I tried a little Zoom Q2n on a live video shoot. Seemed to do a pretty good job capturing 24/48 audio as well as decent 4K video. Mahalo for watching, Stevio
Do you know if you can record audio from a phone or tablet over usb into the Tascam?
I've never tried that. You can certainly select USB as an input device to play audio into your Tascam from a phone or tablet. (Input Select) Not sure about using the mic on your phone, though. Hello, nice video. Can you advise, can atomos trigger tascam recorder when pressing record button on atomos
Sorry. I've never worked with an Atomos system. I know this works with other cameras automatically. Please let me know and thanks for watching.

Do you have any screen burning problem (when same screen is show’n for long time)? Screen backlight bleedin? Any other findings?

Thanks, how do I transfer my files onto my computer or Ipad?
Remove the micro SSD and stick it into your computer to drag/copy the files. You can also use an adapter into your iPad.
I believe if you press the stop button twice it carries u to the launcher
What size SD card and speed are you using?

I guess in « pause record » mode, pressing record once puts the device in rec-pause… then you can check the levels… and press record again to launch the record.

Yes. That's correct. It's based off of the original DR-100. I never liked this mode. It was easy to think it was recording when it actually wasn't. When I see a red light it should mean "rolling!"

With a color screen, why they don't implemente mp4 reading.
I'm really not sure. That Tascam home screen is kind of a waste. Let's see if they improve on it or if Zoom will take the lead with their new recorders. Mahalo!

I think Tascam hasn't really figured out usability in UI; e.g. why can't you use the big knob o navigate files or select functions?
Just a waste of a nice, big knob, right? I wish they would re-invent this unit with a Mk II version. Looks like Zoom is gonna outdo Tascam on this one. Mahalo!

@@HiPunch but i heared, the preamps of the zoom aren’t as good as ones of the tascam… and that matters to me…
@@Flitzefeuersocke I feel the same way. Tascam pre amps are great but look at the mics that come with the Zoom plus six XLR inputs!
