And it’s a very relaxing way to build and paint. Enamels have definitely got a look to them that’s different to Acrylic finishes - at least in my eyes. I’m doing a video on hand-painting with Vallejo Acrylics at the moment .. check it out next week if you can.
Nice job, beautiful model. I still enjoy painting with enamel and airbrushing acrylics on the same model. Sometimes priming with enamel and painting with acrylics or finishing different aereas with acrylic or enamel. The results can be very good. Thanks for sharing the video.

I’m using Vallejo Air only to brush-paint a P47 at the moment.. it’s a challenge because it’s very thin. A good challenge. I’ll try a combo of Enamels and Acrylic’s at some point! Very good job painting with handbrush. Every modeler should at least once try old school techniques. Diversity is a key not money nor additional spendings. Enamels brings that joy who is patient enough to get it through
One additional note from the post below. If you are still using enamel paints exclusively for airbrushing that sheer drying time is increased in case for hand-brushing (thicker layers) but nowadays on market enamel dries pretty much quicker if you stick to thin layers, original thinner ventilated space ...
I still hand paint my models with enamels although recently started with acrylics. As long as you apply slowly with thin coats and rub down before the next coat it's fine. Between coats I use a cotton bud or very fine sanding sponge to smooth it all. You can almost use a dry brushing technique to build it up.
Excellent job. I last used Humbrol enamels 35 years ago, hand painting a Tamiya StuG IV. They were excellent paints, back then when air brushing was too costly. I hope my Fairly Fulmar turns out as good as yours.

Oh sweet! I've got one of these - did an unboxing and it looked an ok kit in general. Yours looks really good! Edit: Some decal manufacturers give you that red dot seperately in the roundel because the printing process isn't perfect and they can have registry problems where they don't line up perfectly. There is nothing worse than off-centre rings and circles on a roundel - providing it as a second decal means you can place it more accurately. More recent decal makers don't have this problem though as technology has improved

I like enamels, they are the traditional model paints, but are a lot messier than acrylics. I would never paint straight from the tin though. Would put some in a palette and thin down.
I have to admit I enjoyed using them again more than I thought I would. My idea for this video was a kind of throw back to that traditional model painting era and keep things as simple and fun as possible. I’m working on a Burma Dakota at the moment and I’m going to thin the Olive enamel to create that patchy look you get in well used aircraft. Looking forward to seeing what results I get.
3 months ago I dug out some old childhood models that were never made (Airfix Ark Royal aircraft carrier and F-14 Tomcat) and 10 Humbrol Enamel paint pot that had never been opened - 45+ years old and they all stirred up perfectly except the yellow and red. Loved doing the models and I'm now back into the hobby. (Had a few contact highs from the paint but the long drying time in between coats helped me out). Thanks for your video - learned a lot for the next old model in the cupboard and I just might stick with enamels for a while.....

Its funny how the smell of the paint opening takes you back instantly. Glad you liked the video and that it was helpful! Brilliantly done. Humboldt paints were a luxury I didn't understand as a boy. I used those little glass bottles of Testor's enamel and was probably 12 before I realized there was a difference between flat and gloss paints. The thought of using them now almost gives me PTSD. Fingerprints, indeed! I am a printing press operator irl and the registration of all those concentric circles is a printing nightmare to the point of impossibility. Depends on how spiffy and new your press is and how much your operator cares! At least on the old school offset, flexographic, and screen presses I'm familiar with. Digital printing technology makes the production of new decals amazingly accurate.

I do remember getting some Testor’s Matt varnish years back because it was the most Matt varnish you could get.. Oh I forgot to say not Mr Color levelling thinners. I mean `real` lacquer thinners ,it works beautiful especially with the matt colours and then u have a choice of any primer colour! oh yeah it sticks, try it 50 /50, it bonds to the plastic not like this water based crap U need a mask and ventilation though

I was in favor of enamels till lately, but when I had to paint scheme similar to yours , so nothing unusual, and it got me two weeks it got me down. When i had some spare time paint was curing and when surface was dry I didn't have time :-) I switched to acrylics and even I have to spray primer coat and it takes one coat more of acrylics than enamels on average I was able to complete painting in one week 🙂 Other important thing ease when paintig canopies, you can always remove excess with cocktail stick, not just 5mins after. This is vital if you're do masking
I’m definitely an acrylic convert but I still enjoy Enamel every so often. For sure enamels are slower and that’s fine if you have the time. I’m still trying new techniques to avoid those annoying paint bleeds onto the canopy 😀👍
Thanks for this. I, too, hand paintusing enamels. RE-started model in my 50s after heart surgery put me in house arrest for a month. Yes, it is a patience teacher, but there's always something else to prepare while you wait. Never have tried humbrol though. In US, was Testors for me, still is. And i always thin it down, 4 or 5 coats for anything other than detail work usually.

@SCIGS30 depends on the color, some more than others, but I usual start with at least 1 part thinner to 4 parts paint. But thicker paints I'll go up to 50/50. I let them dry 24 hours

Ahh, if only I still had the full range of Humbrol Super Enamel (or even better, earlier stuff from the 80s/70s). I still have a number of colours in the old formulas, and even a few Airfix enamels going, but most of my old stuff is gone and I have had to use the newer Humbrol enamel, which can be hit or miss (either wonderful or terrible, depending on luck of the draw) and definitely cannot be painted straight from the tin.
Hey Greg.. a real blast from the past Humbrol and the rarer Airfix! I did really enjoy painting with them again, it’s a nice change from the fast drying Acrylics. I must admit how surprised I was that so many people liked this video.. I wasn’t sure how it’d do as a subject.
I am just starting my modelling again after last picking one up when I was around 13. I am now 51, common story I know, and because I am aware things have come on in leaps and bounds with paints and techniques since I last hung a badly glued and rapidly painted plastic kit from my bedroom ceiling with fishing line. I have been using tutorials on youtube to furnish myself with some of the skills needed to progress. I have just finished my second kit and am moving onto the next one, I popped your vid on in the background to learn about enamels, as I will do a kit in them again to keep my hand in, and lo and behold at 05:40 in the background I spy that very kit im working on.. The Italeri 1/72 Apache... Did you brush paint his one too? I am planning on spraying it as I have just got the Harder and Steenbeck ultra to upgrade from the chinese christmas cracker one.. Great video, thanks for sharing the skills.
Great you are back in the hobby 😀👍 - I think I was same age (12-13) last time I actually finished a kit ha ha There’s so much that’s been improved but you can still keep it simple with good old Enamels. To be honest it can make you dizzy with all the new techniques and products to finish a kit.. I guess a good thing is to try what you can and see what you enjoy. I’ve done a Apache but in Acrylic’s.. although there’s not a lot of difference if you thin the Enamels enough. Triple check the canopy fit.. it was tricky on my kit!!! Pretty cool. I planned to buy a few Mister Craft kits due to them being cheap but I'd heard pretty bad reviews about those kits and decided against buying. But this seems to be a reasonably good one otherwise. Nice brush painting too. The paint coats went on nice
Cheers, Yes they are a bit cheap but are still good for trying different techniques. Also the Fulmar is a pretty rare aircraft type so it’s nice to work on something different. Thanks, I enjoyed using the Enamel paints even with the long drying time. Worth a try if you have some old tins stored away 😀
I too prefer painting my models with a brush, one can do it with ease, no complicated masking of model parts and the final results are in my view mostly better than the application by airbrush with the almost unavoidable sprinkle. Generally a nicely built model, but the deep and unrealistic grooves are a bit disruptive. The fuselage sides for instance look like a brickwall...
To be honest I prefer the look airbrushing gives but not everyone has access to one. This is why I decided to try and do some videos on my channel with just brushes. I do enjoy the challenge of getting the best result with this technique and I personally think, like you that it is possible to get really good results. As to the panel lines on this kit.. well this is a very very cheap kit so you can’t expect much 😀
Cool, Humbrol enamel aint bad paint if its thinned with a plastic friendly lacquer thinner like Tamiya or Mr color thinner. I tested it for airbrush with Tamiya lacquer thinner retarder type and that made it dry much much faster then with their enamel thinner. Their metallics take 10-12 days to dry but with Tamiya lacquer thinner it dried almost immidiately with thin coats. Thick coats took around 1 and a half hour to 2 hours to dry. So I will defenitly use them for detail painting over lacquer and then remove mistakes with enamel thinners.
@@modkitmayhem Its worth trying it works great with all enamels including Revell, Tamiya and Testors. Just remember to use a lacquer thinner made for plastic models because they also contains retarders and wont melt youre plastic. Generinc cheap lacquer thinners might likely make the humbrol enamel dry immidietly leaving brush marks and an un even finish or for airbrushing dry before it hits the model, needle will dry wery fast and plastic might get damadged too.
Such a good smell and very relaxing once you remember how slow they dry ha ha.. I do use tweezers when I remember! Mostly on PE and really tricky details! I find while filming these vids I usually forget!! Hope you enjoyed the vid.
Still hand paint all my kit's use gloss varnish before putting decals on your paints not that old still got some Airfix tins 😳 yellow has always been dodgy once it gets old
Thank you for sharing and tutorial. When using Enamel paints, is there a need to Prime the model kit first? or may this be omitted assuming we clean it really well before applying paint?
Thanks.. glad you like the vids. I think you can just paint Enamels straight on ( I did) although undercoating with a grey primer is a good way of seeing any errors or defects in the model.
I use normal cheap flat artist brushes for larger jobs and Humbrol brushes for normal basic painting. I have a marginally more expensive Citadel brush for figure painting. Hope that helps
I think it was the Mig Ammo one! Pretty sure I hadn’t moved to the Vallejo Acrylic ones by that point. I much prefer Vallejo now, they smell much much better ha ha
Hi Adam.. Cheers 👍 The brush is a Humbrol one from a Airfix starter set. It’s as cheap as they come and perfect for tricky jobs where a good brush would get ruined. I have only one relatively good brush and it’s made by Citadel which I use for figure painting. I also have a cheap art set of brushes that are more than enough for standard brush work. I paint straight from the tin with Enamels! Just make sure they are stirred really well. I think if I was to do a lot of Enamel painting I would thin down slightly where I could. Hope that helps.

I too prefer painting my models with a brush, one can do it with ease, no complicated masking of model parts and the final results are in my view mostly better than the application by airbrush with the almost unavoidable sprinkle. Generally a nicely built model, but the deep and unrealistic grooves are a bit disruptive. The fuselage sides for instance look like a brickwall...
To be honest I prefer the look airbrushing gives but not everyone has access to one. This is why I decided to try and do some videos on my channel with just brushes. I do enjoy the challenge of getting the best result with this technique and I personally think, like you that it is possible to get really good results. As to the panel lines on this kit.. well this is a very very cheap kit so you can’t expect much 😀
Cool, Humbrol enamel aint bad paint if its thinned with a plastic friendly lacquer thinner like Tamiya or Mr color thinner. I tested it for airbrush with Tamiya lacquer thinner retarder type and that made it dry much much faster then with their enamel thinner. Their metallics take 10-12 days to dry but with Tamiya lacquer thinner it dried almost immidiately with thin coats. Thick coats took around 1 and a half hour to 2 hours to dry. So I will defenitly use them for detail painting over lacquer and then remove mistakes with enamel thinners.
That sounds like worth trying! I’ll give it a go next time I get the Enamels out 😀👍
@@modkitmayhem Its worth trying it works great with all enamels including Revell, Tamiya and Testors. Just remember to use a lacquer thinner made for plastic models because they also contains retarders and wont melt youre plastic. Generinc cheap lacquer thinners might likely make the humbrol enamel dry immidietly leaving brush marks and an un even finish or for airbrushing dry before it hits the model, needle will dry wery fast and plastic might get damadged too.
Mmm, the smell of model glue and paint - memories of youth... Don't you use tweezers? It helps a lot in gluing small elements.
Such a good smell and very relaxing once you remember how slow they dry ha ha.. I do use tweezers when I remember! Mostly on PE and really tricky details! I find while filming these vids I usually forget!! Hope you enjoyed the vid.

Still hand paint all my kit's use gloss varnish before putting decals on your paints not that old still got some Airfix tins 😳 yellow has always been dodgy once it gets old

Thank you for sharing and tutorial. When using Enamel paints, is there a need to Prime the model kit first? or may this be omitted assuming we clean it really well before applying paint?
Thanks.. glad you like the vids. I think you can just paint Enamels straight on ( I did) although undercoating with a grey primer is a good way of seeing any errors or defects in the model.

I use normal cheap flat artist brushes for larger jobs and Humbrol brushes for normal basic painting. I have a marginally more expensive Citadel brush for figure painting. Hope that helps

I was the same! Just a paintbrush and enamel tins. It was nice to go back and work that way after using acrylic paints.
What wash did you use to weather at the end??
I think it was the Mig Ammo one! Pretty sure I hadn’t moved to the Vallejo Acrylic ones by that point. I much prefer Vallejo now, they smell much much better ha ha

Hi Adam.. Cheers 👍 The brush is a Humbrol one from a Airfix starter set. It’s as cheap as they come and perfect for tricky jobs where a good brush would get ruined. I have only one relatively good brush and it’s made by Citadel which I use for figure painting. I also have a cheap art set of brushes that are more than enough for standard brush work. I paint straight from the tin with Enamels! Just make sure they are stirred really well. I think if I was to do a lot of Enamel painting I would thin down slightly where I could. Hope that helps.

how long do you wait before applying the 2nd coat?
12+ hours roughly.. 24 hours to be sure! The Grey paint dried quicker than the black paint so it’s different with each colour!
