do people dislike this because it offends them or what? I'd rather be offended and informed than in the dark about these things completely regardless, R.I.P to those who lost their lives
Poor, poor people indeed... My most sincere condolences for them and their relatives and friends... And on July 10th, at Duxford, there was a mid-air collision involving another Mustang, resulting into the P-51 crashed (luckly, the pilot bailed out in time) and the Skyraider it crashed with safely landed with the starboard wing damaged. No one was killed, thanks God. But- what is starting to happen with air shows... and with P-51 Mustangs?
@BassInsomnia That jives with what I heard. I heard from someone photographing the race that a piece of his tail appeared to be missing, right before the plane went out of control. He said it made the plane spin out of control, and it went vertical. Even with the engine gunning it still scrubs a lot of energy, which caused the stall. Then it nosed over, engine still gunning (this all happened in SECONDS), and went for the grandstands. He said the pilot nosed up, but people still got hit.
A g-suit doesn't prevent you from GLOC, it only provides about 1-2 Gs of protection, and only if you are doing the correct AGSM (G suits just give you something to push against so you can force blood from legs and butt to your head). But, depending on the speed he was actually going will tell you the max G he could have even pulled. For an instantaneous GLOC, its going to be up towards 7-9Gs. So, Idk if he was even going fast enough for a GLOC.
@fashionphoto1111 A piece of the plane's tail appears to be gone while at full throttle, and it went vertical while spinning out of control. It scrubbed a lot of energy while spinning vertical, even with the engine gunning. You can't see all that on camera. It stalled then nosed over, with the engine gunning still. It happened so fast, in the middle of a race. What you see in this vid is the plane flying str8 down into the ground after the stall. It was heading for the crowd, and he pulled up.
@ZiggyIsGrape - My guess is that people are disliking the horrific accident, not the video. It's truly horrifying, and clicking "like" doesn't seem quite right...
@BassInsomnia I believe "1." is quite plausible. I do not believe "2" happened as it simply does not look like he was in a stall. If he had gone into a stall the angle that he was diving would have "broken" the stall long before he hit the ground and he would have pulled up and not crashed or at least have been pulling up before the crash. I think, looking at the videos, that he was not pulling up at the time of the crash-or at least the plane was not responding to his actions by that time.
First time that a crash at this show claims the lives of spectators. (Previous crashes had only claimed the lives of pilots.) I feel for those families who have people who aren't coming home. I would not be surprised if it turned out that Jimmy Leeward was already dead when he crashed, and that would hurt even more, as there was nothing that he could have done.
He passed out. He had no control of the craft. In one photo you can see he is not present in the cockpit. It was a matter excessive of G forces, or a health condition. Nevertheless, it is a tragedy. Condolences to all that perished, and best wishes to all the families involved.
As far as stalling, if he did pull back to hard, then it could have been an accelerated stall. Stalls don't just occur because of going too slow. They occur because of to much angle of attack. If he pulled back to much, and caused to much AOA, a stall could have been induced. But, just releasing back stick pressure would exit the stall. I think we are going to have to wait for the NTSB report.
I really don't think he simply stalled during the pull-up. He's going way too fast for that. He had to be doing AT LEAST 250 kts when he hit. I bet he had the problem, pulled up too fast (rudder trim shouldn't have any effect on the rate of his pull up), G-LOC'd, and packed it in. Do the Unlimited guys all race with G-suits?
@HouseDiva33 I was thinking the same exact thing, I've been looking all over for footage from a different vantage point and all I've found everywhere was this same one.
@BlizBob This had nothing to do with the pilot's ability, or the plane's capability. Someone taking pictures of the plane during the race report seeing a piece of the tail missing just before the plane went of control. I don't care if you're flying the Wright Brother's invention, or the latest/greatest F22 fighter... if a piece of your tail is missing, you are in a world of hurt.
I would like to see a video without that damn lady in the red plaid shirt getting on the way. Thank you Jimmy RIP. thank you for avoiding the spectators.
Jesus has nothing to do with this! Its an Airplane!!Shit happens when when your going that fast! Just Thank Jimmy!!!DUDE! He tried his best not put himself in the crowd!!! And not more people didn't get hurt!!Rest in peace to jimmy and the people Who died today! Reminder to People life can be taken in a Flash!
This was my dad's buddy Jimmy, just saw him recently at my dad's hangar in Mckinney Texas. i cant believe this is on youtube!

wow and the pilots family was watching how horrible. it is my heart goes out to the pilots family and to the dead and injured peoples family.

@fashionphoto1111 I agree. He had no control of the plane at the time of the crash. Wing stall is quite possible.

with all the cameras that were out there..why are we only getting one perspective of the crash? is there any other footage out there of this?
may flights of angels take them to their rest. a sad sad day.
