M190 to M210 Front Drive Unit FDU Swap in a 6th Generation Ford Bronco: How To Do It

  • This video is part of our series on re-gearing and axle-swapping our '21 Ford Bronco Base. This video covers the process, in-depth, of removing the factory M190 Front Drive Unit and replacing it with a used or aftermarket M210 FDU. In our case we swapped in a used Badlands FDU that we had already re-geared and freshened up. But the process would be the same for those considering installing a brand new M210 FDU assembly from Ford Performance or Dana.
This is a fairly long video because we wanted to document the entire process for anyone considering doing this work themselves but might not be sure what it entails. Experienced mechanics might find it a bit basic and ponderous so it won't hurt our feelings if you choose to find something more brief to view for your Bronco entertainment. But for those considering this as a DIY project, it's all in there so grab a beer and follow along!
This is the third video in the series. Please check out our 5.13 Gear Swap video, the first installment in this series, if you haven't yet, and our M220 Rear Axle Swap video. The next video in the series will cover the process of buttoning everything up, hooking up the locker switches, and installing ProCal to delete the FAD.
If you're new to our channel, Steffie & Dusty bought "Chanel" as a 2-door Base model with no options except for the auxiliary switches, one of the first new Broncos delivered to our area in early summer of 2021. Over the past couple of years we've put it through its paces in stock form then started building it into a highly capable trail rig. Please check out our previous videos if you haven't seen them, and subscribe to stay tuned as we continue with the upgrades and off-road adventures!

Thanks for not stripping the process with the editing. I know on my 2.7 M210 to UFDU swap, I didn't have to muck with the steering rack, but did have to take the Top mount off both diffs to get them out & back in. Felix808

To be honest we didn't even consider doing that (removing the top mount from the diff). The M190 came out fairly easily without doing that, even with the steering rack still in place. We naively pushed forward, thinking the M210 would go back in the same way LOL.

You might want to look into upgrading that steering rack with one from 74 welds.

We already did! We installed the 74Weld rack a couple weeks ago. We filmed it but haven't edited the video yet.

Taking off the brakes takes a few minutes and makes wrangling the CV a lot easier, plus way less strain on the brake hose and the lower ball joint. :)
Undoing the passenger lower control arm is the easiest way to reinstall the steering rack. Feed it through there.

Twist it poke it push it and move stuff around.....
You need to coin that phrase....
And turn it into a country and western song....
Make sure you mentioned prison mama trucks and getting drunk
And I do believe you'll have the perfect country and western song LOL
Don't forget you mentioned the mother-in-law.
I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison and I went to pick her up in the rain when I got to the station in my pickup truck she got runned over by a goddamn train ......

Great video, Dusty and Steffie! I always wondered what it would take to upgrade to the bigger differentials - doesn't look too difficult.

Were you able to reuse the stock m190 axle shafts?

    • @HorsinAround
      @HorsinAround  Před 2 měsíci

No, I had to use M210 axles. I initially had a used set, but I've since replaced them with new ones from Ford Performance (see our latest video that just came out today).

How are you hooking up the front and rear lockers?

I used the AUX switches. We'll cover that in the next video.

All you need is a switchable 12v & the pig tail. Ford drops voltage in the factory setup once engaged I suspect for efficiency reasons, but solenoids are on / off just need 12 v to fire on and hold.
