  • This video tells the story of how humans became the most social higher mammals on the planet - super-social animals. We explore the development of extreme levels of altruism, egalitarianism and trust... and explore the development of guilt, conscience, good and evil!
This video is part of the 'Ascent of Humanity' series, covering human history from 7 million years ago, up until around 20,000 years ago.

    Channel:
Exploring deep history, philosophy, politics, economics, religion, science and psychology through telling 'The Story of the Ancestors'. From the beginning of time, through the evolution of life, to the ascent of humanity... the prehistoric, agricultural, industrial and information ages.
The first series will recount the heroic epic of how humanity evolved - historically, psychologically and culturally. Future series will tell the creation story of the Big Bang... and dramatic tales describing how the modern world evolved. I'll also make miscellaneous videos covering various interesting topics.

I think it's an interesting and plausible idea. I don't really think it's likely that drugs were initially a central factor in driving the development of human cognition and creativity, but they certainly played an interesting role in human culture and history, that goes a very long way back. It is intriguing how common ritualistic drug-use, for religious purposes, is within hunter-gatherer societies. I'll definitely do a video on early human drug-use fairly soon, as it's clearly a significant subject in our story 🙂

Yea, drawing conclusions from studies with captive apes has significant flaws, although I think some of the captive ape studies have been useful... especially when the conclusions seem to agree with observational studies in the wild
