Amarok vs Patrol at Newnes, Wombats & The Crack

  • The Amarok had a clear advantage in the first section due to his rear locker.
    The second and third sections were more equal as the Amarok only used traction control, and the Patrol has an LSD.
    In both cases the Patrols larger tyres and greater articulation provides significant benefit.
    Amarok has 32's, rear locker, traction control and 35mm suspension lift (King/Bilsteins).
    Patrol has 33's (285) and 2" suspension lift.

    The Amarok really impresses me so far.
    They uses ABS/Traction control system to apply brakes on spinning floating wheels so that power is not wasted on wheels that are not touching the ground.
    This puts power on the wheels that are grounded and moves it forward even without added momentum.
    The Patrol is just old school 4x4 with large articulation and a special set of off-road tyres that gives more grip offroad.
    Amarok is better balance off-road and on-road. Because the vehicle has IFS and road going tyres.

      +James B These vehicles are such different animals, the balance will always come down to the owners requirements. Personally, and from an offroading point of view, I'm not a fan of the Amarok at all. They're great on highway but off road are seriously lacking torque, it's panels are too low begging to be hit on rocks, and the factory rear locker is weak. Traction control systems are handy for the casual driver but for regular off road abuse, nothing is as good as a locker.

      +James B I prefer Nissan Patrol, Has more traction and better rear and front balance. If you see Amarok always has the lef or right tire in the air.

      yocaha1 I think that the Amarok is innovative as it is able to keep up with a full-fletch off-roader with less articulation, lesser power and without a low-range gearbox. Plus, the car is way more comfy.
      As for the traction control system in Amarok, I would argue that it is better because it is easier to drive and equally effective. I mean with this system you never lose steering control. Unlike a lock-diff, which as to be activated manually and turn off as soon as possible so that you won't strain the drivetrain.

    The VW traction control is one of the most refined around, along with the virtual diff lock computer program, but at the end of the day you can't beat the solid and predictable feel of mechanical lockers.

      @glenep  Před 10 lety +1

      Couldn't agree more. TC is a fantastic out of the box solution for the common traction issues people face on the trails, but when you want to go serious *regularly*; diff lockers ;-)

      Front recovery point custom made. Fitted by 69rollarok in Sydney. I could make one but it will set you back $2k and is not approved. Transfers load to chassis members. I can winch off the front or back using a 9000Lb cradle winch.

    • @glenep
      @glenep  Před 10 lety +1

      By comparison to the Patrol I'd say the main factor is a limited amount of articulation available in the Amarok's suspension. It's a common drawback to IFS vehicles when traversing uneven terrain - and affects some IFS vehicles more than others.

    • @glenep
      @glenep  Před 9 lety +1

      I don't own an Amarok but it does seem to be a common thing. Do take it easy on the rear drive line as the factory locker seems fragile and a very expensive repair.

    Doesn't the patrol have lockers? Also, does the Amarok TC control the front axle while the rear locker is on or does engaging the diff lock disable the TC?

    • @glenep
      @glenep  Před 10 lety

      These Patrols don't come standard with lockers, only a rear LSD. Hopefully one of the Amarok fans can answer your TC question...

    • @136Hammer
      @136Hammer Před 10 lety +1

      I believe my Amarok tc controls all 4 wheels unless you select rear diff lock, then the tc is only on the front. The tc takes a second to find the grip where the lockers get instant traction, but it's easier to maneuver with tc than diff lockes.
