Authenticity is vital to Perry, who remembers the time he was at Rada, rehearsing with fellow actors, when a secret onlooker turned out to be George Bernard Shaw. “He said, ‘I enjoyed your show tremendously. I laughed a lot. But you’ve got to understand one rule of comedy: you must have reality, otherwise it’s rubbish.’” In any case, thanks to its successful repeats Dad’s Army is guaranteed immortality. But to what does Perry attribute our enduring love of Captain Mainwaring and co? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour. It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”
Simon Blackwell ‘To create comedy that generations of people genuinely love is rare, and he managed it time and again’. Perry’s work on the show - along with that of the producer, David Croft - created one of the most popular British television programmes of all time’.
Jack Dee ‘Amazing contribution to British telly. Watched Dad's Army only yesterday. Still as funny as when I watched it as a kid.’
Vicki Michelle ‘a brilliant comedy writer & true gentleman. He leaves us such a legacy’
Ian Lavender ‘Jimmy, he has been a part of my life for such a long time. ‘He was half of one amazing partnership, it brings back so many wonderful memories… lots of good times together with much laughter…’
David Schneider ‘Thanks to Jimmy Perry for the sublime Dad’s Army, the perfect sitcom, and for making me laugh for over 40 years.’
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Jimmy Perry is a Goliath of British comedy writing. His work will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come’.
Miranda Hart ‘Thank you Jimmy Perry. You made our world a funnier and brighter place.’
Nigel Farage tweeted: Jimmy Perry created and co-wrote the fantastic Dad's Army, my favourite comedy of all time.'
Tom Watson 'We grew up laughing at Jimmy Perry's hilarious characters. One of our greatest TV writers who will not be forgotten.'
Ruth Madoc ‘Being on set was quite hard work, but great fun. We weren’t allowed to laugh. One particular series we’d been naughty giggling on set. This didn’t go down very well with David and Jimmy, so they made us T-shirts saying, ‘Comedy is a serious business’. We were told in no uncertain terms’.
Frank Williams “Dad’s Army was one of the happiest periods of my life, it was a wonderful role to work on.”
TV comedy producer Jon Plowman said, “The quality of his work was consistently brilliant”, adding that Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft came as a package. He described them as “comedy revolutionaries”, saying, “They made it look easy; we know it is not.”
Chris Jarvis ‘this sitcoms are pure gold & will live on.’
Jeffrey Holland ‘There is no doubt that he and David created some of the most memorable and iconic characters and moments in television sitcom history and as such, has left us with a wonderful legacy we can look back on for many years to come. I am proud to have been a part of so many of his series’.
Mark Braxton ‘There is a light that never goes out - and its name is Jimmy Perry’
Perry admits to being bowled over by the continuing success of his Home Guard comedy: “Isn’t it amazing? Let me tell you, I’m overwhelmed.”
Appointed an OBE in 1978, Jimmy Perry published his autobiography, A Stupid Boy, in 2002 and received a British Comedy award for lifetime achievement in 2003.
Feel welcome on our fan page to share all the fun... and love for DA. .. see you on: Dad's Army Fan Zone - Komedie
Talfryn Thomas (Cheeseman) saw war action, he was the sole survivor of a bomber crash (he was the gunner). He felt such a degree of survivor's guilt that he went into acting to make something of himself out of respect to those crewmembers that were lost. He felt he owed it to them.
So many good men were taken from that war. It's a shame people can cause such destruction towards one another 😔
Many of the great actors - and comedians - on both sides of the Atlantic had active duty in the war and experienced combat. They brought character and compassion to their work which the public recognised and appreciated. Now, it's straight from "teen tv" to drama school and monocultural life experience. That's why Dad's Army and other works are such treasures. Enriched with humanity.
Wow I that's amazing I did look him up he was from Swansea

im 13 and this is still my favourite tv program!! my grandpa showed it to me and it is hilarious !
"Have you lost a turkey?".
"It's hard to say, isn't it" :-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They made it funny. However, the idea of turning the drunken escapade to giving a nice dinner for the pensioners was lovely.
I really like this kind of classic British comedy
They don't make this kinda stuff this days
"You remember Bloodwynn Jones, the fat Welsh girl, who used to wash the glasses on a Saturday night? She spent half her life in that haystack. That's why we used to call her 'the welcome in the valley'."
Mr Cheeseman, the Welsh photographer, does not have many lines, but most of them are belters.
Righto boy ,!
Dad's Army is difficult to beat.Right at the top with Allo Allo , Fawlty Towers and Yes Minister. One cannot tire of watching it again and again.Perhaps the most splendid diverse cast of any tv series.
Only Fools and Horses is among them too.
I think It Ain't Half Hot Mum tops OFAH.
As an American I can agree with Dad’s Army and Yes Minister/ Prime Minister. But I’m gonna add MASH to my list. That show got me through some rough times before I ever discovered British TV.
Dont forget Keeping up appearances!
None of which were politically correct or 'inclusive'.
Which is why there is nothing nice on tv anymore.
Oh wait, Fawlty towers had Manuel in it, from Barcelona (a village in the south of Wales consisting of 1 farmer a dog and 3 chickens)
Well, you know it is when you get the nadgers, boy.....you shiver all over, isn't it ?
Mrs. Fox to Jonesy: Well you've always been very nice about my dumplings😂
Saw this ep in a hong kong hotel in '97. Didn't know it was a classic til now.
Timeless masterpiece, no matter how many times I watch it it never gets old
I agree !

Hi Mohammed na, perhaps you could write " I am thankful to the BBC for this work. It always makes me happy. I hope you can understand my English, as I am trying to teach myself."
I used to teach English, so I know how hard it is to learn, and I have to say, your knowledge of English is better than my knowledge of your native language , so well done. Good luck with your language study.
@@camt9967 Not as hard to learn as erdu or Hebrew
Sunday morning laugh from Dad's Army is magical, never gets old 😂
God's Vibes
I respect and appreciate this work. It was able, and despite the tragedy of the war now, it turned this sad event into a very wonderful comic work.

As an ex British pat living in Australia this was a real treat to watch once again. Thank you George 1010th for posting it.
Good to have a 'new" episode. Always a fan......
Look up the lyrics to the song Godfrey sang and you'll never be able to look at him the same way again !
I was just explaining to my Greek bf about the home guard and we are watching this. Greece was sadly taken over by the nazis. 🥺
It’s incredible to think that two of the actors were born two centuries ago!
My Sister Dolly won't boil the giblets....she says the smell makes here Pekinese to excited!
It's young Mr. Grace!
Old Mr. Grace doesn't get about much any more.
Yup
Lots of characters that appear in "Dad's Army" also made appearances on "Are You Being Served?"
Arthur Brough who played Mr Grainger was also in a few episodes
Wendy Richard was in it as well.
that Turkey dinner looks delicious.
Please bring these comedies back on t.v. if possible. Thanks 💕
Love this show 4ever
17:24 You can see Hodges (Bill Pertwee) mouthing the lines of Mr Bluett as he was saying them.
In my view - Dad's Army is the greatest Comedy series ever made (Fawlty Towers and Open all hours come close to the mark) for the cast is faultless, the brillante script, and direction - but what makes it so great - it is based on reality.
Ya forgot Seinfeld, Handcocks Half Hour, All In The Family, Steptoe And Son Mother And Son, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc etc.
A blanket statement like yours is so unwise. [Dads Army].
Fully agree Chris ! British top 3 : 1. Dad's Army. 2. Fawlty Towers 3.One foot in the grave. US top 3 : 1. All in the family 2. Cheers. 3. Taxi.
I like to disagree.
Nobody does comedy like John Cleese. The way he plays Basil is priceless. After having seen every episode several tines over and knowing what's coming you still crack up.
Tell me the scene where he trashes his car isn't the most funny scene ever in a comedy series.
To me Fawlty Towers is the best British comedy ever. And Andrew Sachs as Manuel was equally brilliant.
I just saw it for the first time this past weekend and it's wonderfully written. The dignity and absurdity cross a remarkable line.
@@gor0356 Seinfeld is a plagiarised NY version of "The Last of the Summer Wine..." I could see Jerry Seinfeld sitting in one of the best London hotels watching it and suddenly thinking...(whiney voice) that's a show about nothing...I could do that...set it in NY...
OMG that was just what I needed :)
I’ve started to look this show up every few months so it keeps showing up in my suggestions
Good for you
That's great. Hopefully you'll see every episode, they're all fantastic.
First time watching it. Looks funny

LOVE THIS SHOW....NJ, USA
I am eating a turkey dinner now with mashed potatoes with gravy, and bread dressing. I like both white and dark meat of a turkey.

good old show :)
An absolute gem. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Timeless
Thanks for uploading
Lovely ensemble effort, best to all🙂
The thing I love about the credits is if you look close enough you can see Godfrey running far behind the rest even at the end of the episode they manage to put a smile on my face.
I just stumbled across dads army in quarantine and I love it!!! Already watched every episode, can’t find the movie tho...what are some other top notch British comedy’s like this?
Ive also tried to put The Movie on YT... but they took it of immediately... its not from the BBC
Chris Murphy try “till death do us part”
Are You Being Served Fawlty Towers, eastenders
Greg Hemlock love fawlty towers and are you being served! I’ll have to check outeastenders
Try Fawlty towers . Father Ted .and the good life
So, there is another Dad's Army, about to come forth! There will NEVER be anything like the original Dad's Army, NEVER! They are the one and only, and always will be, anything these days, to make a Pound or Buck! Regardless of the obvious lack of quality or the infinite stupidity, to even attempt such an endeavor! .......
Ofc there will be. 3/4 of them will be bloack and fuzziewuzzles and the rest will be queens
After all, history has to be accurate.
Oh wait...
It sounds like you are making snide indirect reference to Hogan's Heroes, a show I will remind you aired ten years before this one. Just listen to the laughtrack on Dad's Army doing a CBS pitch, they're laughing in the literal note that Col. Hogan speaks in
A fantastic series...
I really enjoyed this episode, considering I thought I had seen them all already. And this one I had not 🙂
that was great
Good joke Mainwaring!
this was the last episode with Tafryn Thomas as Mr Cheeseman. I wonder why he didn't stay in the show until the end. I know he couldn't have filled the void left by Walker when James Beck passed on. but it was interesting having all parts of Britain represented by the English actors John Laurie as the Scotsman Fraser and Tafryn Thomas as the Welshman private Cheeseman.
Stupid Yank Question here... Wasn't Mr. Thomas in the original version of 'Survivors'? The guy who played the skeevey scrounger?
The problem with Cheeseman was that he was too similar to Fraser.
John Laurie was born in Scotland.
Apparently Arthur Lowe wanted "Cheeseman" off due to the fact that the character was getting too many laughs.
@@carolineg1872 seems a bit odd since they were all more or less getting lots of laughs. Sounds more like personal issues...

They were able to interpret ja reconstruct the color information from the original footage in BBC labs. There is interesting article about this on the web.
One egg a week per person.
i remember during the sars period or the bird flu.. eggs were so rare and expensive. i bought 10 for $5. and recently our govt destroyed 25,000 eggs bought as a precaudtion measure and stored. due to the covid 19 food shortage.there wasnt in our country ..no food shortage.....so the retailers and supermarkets didnt want to buy as there was a glut on the market and prices dropped. so the idiot govt destroyed the eggs. when asked why they didnt distribute to the needy and HOmes , they said it ws past the expiry date. bullshit....! they would have known if it was going to expire.. govts cannot be trusted...my heart hurts for so much food to be wasted when so many lost their jobs and some have little money to buy food they want..!
Very funny haha
Do you realise how hard it is to be a step out from the rest of the troop!
Increible fucking brilliant
I like Mrs Fox. She's pretty. I most certainly would.
Aw, you just like her dumplings.
Gravy mess near the end so funny
Why dont you have a word with Mr Jones' mother! lmao
The joke - not sure why three people as it may work with only two? 😎🤣🤣
Yes, except it allowed for Sgt Wilson to steal the Captain's spot light.
Never gets old :)
I would have left the meeting in the first minute.
capt mainwaring reciting the menu made my mouth water. did he say 'red sauce' or bread sauce? sorry i am not british ..just curious
Bread Sauce. I have never come across it anywhere other than on a British table. Surprisingly delicious it is made from breadcrumbs, onions, butter, cream/milk, cloves, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Served with turkey, chicken, pheasant, partridge and similar birds.
U. Rock
Bread sauce is absolutely delicious.
@@holmanrw i think americans call it white sauce. ? its made with flour instead of bread crumbs. also has cream onions, nutmeg, etc. my husband taught me. yes delicious if made well.

I wonder what the Welshman's role in the joke was? :-)
ooh so The King's Head was already a thing back then...
I had to look up "parson's nose." Never heard that term before.

Thank God for Dads Army
I don’t understand the references to a public school education. A public school education in the USA is considered mediocre.
In the UK, public schools are what we in the US would call private boarding schools. As in the US, most children in the UK go to the tax-funded state schools in their locality. The British call them "public" schools because they accepted students from the general public as opposed to state schools where you could only attend the school designated for your locale. To attend a "public" school, one must be able to afford the fees and pass the entrance requirements. This made it more likely that only those kids who came from upper class families attended public schools. Britain had a more stratified class structure than we do in the US, so attending a public school was associated with being a more elite member of a higher social class. If you are familiar with Harry Potter, Hogwartz was modeled after a British public school.
Never notice Arthur Lowe fumbling his lines before.
Form is emptiness/emptiness is form.
First rate entertainment.
The predecessor to Are You Being Served?
That's cheered them up😀😄✌️🇦🇺🇦🇺
Mr Mainwaring a waiter. Never
So. Dose. God free.
What does 'a monk of high renown' mean ?? I don't understand the origin of this sentence when was it first used??
It’s a bawdy drinking song.
Fun fact: Arnold Ridley was the great-uncle of Daisy Ridley.
Another fun fact: In real life, Arnold Ridley was the studliest one of the bunch. Enlisted in the Army in WW1, wounded numerous times, got out as a captain, then volunteered for service at the beginning of WW2, was medically discharged, then joined the Home Guard.

Welsh-accented English usually sounds melodic to me, even musical, whereas Cheeseman's sounds the opposite, very choppy. Would someone be kind enough to explain? Is his accent from a particular area of Wales?
South Wales usually, the valleys.

Why do they have white paint at a turkey dinner for the old people?
it was left over from when that man painted Mannering's sign on his office door
Wholesome comedy, not like the Godless trashy brainless profanity that passes for wit these days.
Young Mr Grace!!
A great show except for the laugh track.Tone it down ,PLEASE .Ernie Colorado
Dad's Army was performed in front of a live studio audience, as were most multi-camera sitcoms in Britain at the time. It is what it is, the live reaction of a real audience, NOT a "laugh track"... as you put it.
