Kenneth Horne was an old fashioned English gentleman. Educated, intelligent, charming, courteous, generous, entertaining, funny and entertaining. He was independently wealthy from the Patrician class. We will not see his type again. RIP Mr Horne.

I am a huge fan of Kenneth Horne and all his comedy and especially Round The Horne which is regularly repeated on Radio 4 Extra. He was very much under-rated during his life and his comic genius is still yet to be fully recognised. This clip is a lovely tribute from his step-daughter, Sue Montague and is a worthy contribution to one of the UK's finest comedy performers.

I have fond memories of going to the BBC Paris studios on a Monday lunchtime to see the recordings of Round The Horne, the audience was packed with students & OAP's, Kenneth Williams did the warm up & I recall always told the same jokes.

My grandmother was Nancy Graham, mentioned in the video above. She often mentioned him fondly, as they were great friends at school. I have many photos of them and their classmates during their time at St George's. I also have a BBC script of the This is your life episode. Her part reads as follows:
“Even in those days he was an exceptionally dashing person. He was certainly the first boy at St George’s to wear Oxford Bags. He decided to wear them when it was his turn to read the lesson in chapel. As he walked down the aisle there was this extra-ordinary flapping noise and as he mounted the lectern one could see why. His trousers were enormous, at least two feet wide, and they caused a most unseemly merriment among the congregation. The fashion became popular, but not with the authorities. As a matter of fact he was given six of the best. I also shared his experiments at brewing alcohol in the chemistry laboratory. In spite of that I was still to become head girl of the school and he the head boy. But of course Kenneth has gone one better since. He’s now a highly respected governor of the school.”

I grew up on Round the Horne. Mondays at school would see us kids hanging out and talking about Sunday's programme. And yes, Archive dot org has them and they are on my iPod. And it is still funny as heck! I also bought a great book eBay called Round Mr. Horne: The Life of Kenneth Horne by Barry Johnston - very interesting reading!
