They could have started off genuinely believing there were evil spirits, that then escalated into the parents needing to stay awake as long as possible so they turned to meth, then started cooking and like everything else they did they messed it up, so horribly it got the house condemned

my guess is that when they cooked the meth they did it and got high off of it and the guy who "helped them" find spirits was just a guy trying to get them to produce meth for him to sell

The ending story may not have been a drug situation. If they were really believing demons haunted them and were doing rituals, it's possible there were sacrificed animals in the basement.

Or... if the children were as ferral as they sounded, maybe they were never taught to use the toilet and messed all over the house. If they didn't work, who paid utility bills. No running water=nasty.

About 12 years back I was contracted to clear, clean, and repair a small house owned by a rather wealthy jeweler who had let his prostitute/junkie niece live there rent free for years.
The "home" had a single toilet that was filled to the top with human excrement...yeah. I can't imagine how it was used by the last few people who filled it either.
The owners nephew was a realtor who provided a ton of work for my business so I didn't walk away from the job. I just made a plan that allowed me to trash the entire toilet, poop and all, without contaminating myself, my workers, or anything else.
I suspect that what got the house in this story condemned and the children, finally, taken away, was the families unfamiliarity with indoor plumbing.
After a lifetime of being used to pooping as bears do the kids, and perhaps the parental substitutes that were raising them, were doing their business everywhere in the house.
I shudder to imagine it...but I can imagine it.

I don't think the junk in the yard would have smelled at all. I grew up with a backyard that was adjacent to a junk car lot. I've also lived in a minivan for nearly 2 years... cars don't bring odor like the way they're saying.... unless they used them for raw material storage. Their ghost hunter friend was probably their connection to selling product. And tweakers dig holes... it's a thing. I don't get it but yeah. The kids learned it somewhere. Or they were exposed to the product themselves.

I would go get a room in town but several of our local hotels have no locals within 50 miles policies. Since I still had my parents address on my license since I was moving back home after school if the other hotels were booked I couldn’t get a room. It was so infuriating.

Everyone assumes that they’re making drugs inside the house because of the hazmat people. My first thought was they didn’t know how to use indoor toilet and that there was urine and feces everywhere
and/or perhaps rotting food, since they probably didn’t use a refrigerator. Hence, they actually would send hazmat people to deal with a situation like that.

Just because ppl are physically capable of having children doesn’t mean they should. There are psychological and emotional premises as well, just as important.

They sound like gift certificates that you can't scan a balance. Small business and spa's deal with that. I had an ex co worker do that she bought her family gift certificates, then canceled the charge. They did have a serial number, so when I went to use my secret Santa, I had a pleasant surprise 😱. Ya, no, I didn't have $50 towards my spa day. She tried to downplay it, but I knew from the owner that she had bought 10 $50 certificates and canceled the transition. She was unfortunately not only dumb enough to gift me but our BOSS, whose mother was humiliated at the spa, and heard the tawdry tale. Me getting screwed out of secret Santa stunk, but Sandy getting the bosses mom in a pickle was not a great way to say Merry Christmas to a boss who GENEROUSLY tips for Christmas in cash so no tax. He was not happy. Sandy doesn't work w us anymore. He husband left and got sober after being married to crazy for 35 years. Hope you're doing better, Charlie and Sandy. You owe me 50 dollars.😅
