  • Is there any real difference between the old Tenere 660 and the new 700? In this video, I will share my opinion on this topic. In the following few minutes, I will compare these two bikes in terms of price, specifications, overall design, functionality, reliability, and performance, and of course, I will end with my personal opinion and final conclusion.

I live in Asia, so 250 is big here. At first the 660 was the dream for my European adv, then the new 700. In May my friend and I rented the 660 Tenere and 660 XT for a trip through Morocco. I am fit 54 years old guy, 178 cm and 75 kg. In the two days riding through the desert, 330 km, the Tenere became a monster, a whale. Slight off vertical position due to sand and such, the bike was down. Picking up was a team effort. The XT being lighter, went down only a few times. I was dreaming of my Rally 300 that I have here. The reality is that adv bikes are touring bikes and are used as such for the vast majority of riding. The real question and change of mind set is, do you want to have the right bike when the "real" adventure starts or you want a touring bike that looks cool. For me it's the first, so 200 kg bikes are out, main highways are out and such. My 155 kg, 27 HP Rally is what fits my idea of an adv bike. Still hoping for 35-40 ish HP, 150-160 is kg unicorn. Kove 450 is bit too hard core, hopping the new 452 Himalayan will be light enough and considering the new Triumph scrambler 400X as well. The weight of the rest of the "middle weight" bikes is what makes them into cool touring bikes on the road and whale monsters when off the beaten path adventure starts. Just one guys opinion.

i have to agree although never rode those 200kg bikes out of pavement. as a 300l owner the only bike i look forward to are chinese kove 450s. the only thing i miss in 300l is 10km/h more without that engine being stressed. as i write this comment 2023 himalayan is shown already and it weights 200kg with 450cc engine… beautiful, fully equipped bike, but because of the weight i will pass. to my knowledgenothing else on the market fits our needs.

Good feedback, had my eye on the honda 300 rally which took a year to enter the country but eventually decided against it,too under powered.
Lovely bike but anything under 40hp just seems a waste of money.
Maybe waiting for a 450 rally will be years away if looking at the Honda and Yamaha brand only.

I've had the XT250, 660 & 700. Prefer size & ergonomics on 660, but the fueling remained imperfect & temperamental. Smooth in dry weather, cranky in the rain. By comparrison, the 700 is larger & heavier, easier to pack camping stuff, more economical, faster smoother better on gravel, easier to stand & ride better looking and require no tuning, pipes power commanders etc.
For local rides, I still use the XT250 most often!!!

So very true. I got by with my XT 600 for 20 years. Thought those very noticeable vibrations were normal (it is, so to speak almost the same motor as was in your 660 Ténéré. This engine is really ancient and goes, in its roots, back to the 70ies. Over the years, it was just adapted to modern requirements, never to its advantage. That is why the old 600 ended up with 40 ponies.). I never imagined what a difference a parallel twin could make, it was almost like magic (well, apart from the 74 HP - I must admit, they are very nice to have). Never would go back.

Felt like an elephant. 215 kg. Top heavy.
    I hated it.
Sold it after only 2 months.
The T7 is a flawed design.
Engine sits to high in the frame due to the oil pan beeing a street style type.
Lazy Japanese engineers did not bother to redesign the engine with a flat bottom for adventure purpose.
Aprilia redesigned their 660 for the purpose.

Changed the gearing on mine. Cruises at 70 mph at just under 5k revs. Added one on the front and lost 2 or 3 on the back. Did this after remap gave it loads more go and de cat exhaust.. A big thanks to Geoff at Hilltop motorcycles at Hinckley UK for stonking results after remapping lots of my bikes. Had my low capacity Honda CRF 300 rally done and thought it couldn't make much difference but blimey you can certainly notice the difference.. Much more go . But getting back to Tenere it needed higher gearing as it wanted to wheelie all the time, ok if you are younger than me. But old git that rides a bit heavy on the throttle. Then did a de snorkle air filter cap and high flow filter and its like an old school pre euro restrictions bollocks proper bike tons more performance and better fuel economy.

The difference is 15 kg. This is my entire luggage. On my last trip, I needed extra fuel for only one day. Keep in mind that 95% of people will never need extra petrol and won't notice this 2cm suspension travel, especially with the stock springs. The pros that you listed here, this 7 liter, 2cm suspension travel, wider footpegs, and steering stabilizer, do not justify the extra weight, and the additional 2,000 euros price for me. For 200 euros, I upgraded my suspension, and it is way better than yours now, even with the lower travel. The stock pegs are fine and can live without a steering stabilizer. You don't need to agree with me, just ride whatever you like.

again, your info is totally wrong. Neither difference is 15kg, nor 20kg (as you said in video). Its actually around 8kg (dry weight difference).@@motorcycleadventures

Sorry to say, but your recent clips are very personal and not very generalised for public consumption
