    • @spektrograf

Watch Collecting Strategy completely agreed, but I’m biased since there’s one in my stable. Putting it side by side with my buddy’s BLNR, I hands down love my Seiko more in almost every respect-including the size! That being said, full disclosure that I hold no particular aspiration for Rolex’s...except perhaps maybe the Polar Explorer. Good on you to mention the bracelet! The angular links with the single polished titanium facet on the center links makes this the only watch I have where I don’t swap the bracelet for other straps.
Edit: just wanted to add that what you said about the SNR033 having very little in design commonality to the BLNR is dead on. You touched on it so quickly that people might have missed it. Thematically, they are both GMT sports watches with a black/blue 24-hour bezel, but beyond that they both take very different design approaches and executions.

I bought one of these when they first came out, as i just fell in love with the dial and how the light plays on the bezel. You look at the dial and just feel that you could fall into it. it is just so clear and crisp. I like the bigger watch and always have. My wrist size is 7 1/4 inch. I also have a GS diver and an Omega Seamaster of which i love to bits but the Seiko is the only watch that anybody has commented on (not that I seek anybody to comment on my watch) because of how the light plays on not only the Zaratsu polishing buy also the dial and particulary the bezel.

I bought a Grand Seiko sbga413 (cherry blossom) for my office watch and the Seiko snr051 moon watch for the weekend. The SNR051 is every bit of a Grand Seiko except for the case back. I had no problem paying the $5,500 because I know what I'm paying for. The movement, the dial, the ziratsu hand finished titanium case. Only a true watch enthusiast appreciates and understands these watches and the value you are getting when you purchase one.

I had the limited edition version of this watch for a little while earlier this year. I found the grey tones on the bezel, along with the faded blue section of the dial gave the watch a washed-out look. This non-limited version, however, looks like it has much better colours. And at ~44mm, the size is perfect. I'm glad that Seiko hasn't caved to the loud voices from the smaller wrist crowd. Some of us need these larger pieces to avoid looking like we've mugged a child for their watch.

I respect Seiko but one should also know the Rolex seamlessly mixes two different ceramic colours with platinum inserts on the indications. The markers & hands on the Rolex are made of white gold, added on with all the prestige and heritage that I think should worth a premium over its actual cost for making. No luxury watch is "VFM" so I think it's pointless comparing brands. Stop hating Rolex, just buy any watch you like and love it till you can :)

Grand Seiko going independent is a move to please the public and appeal to those who want exclusivity. But the reality and fact of the matter is that Grand Seiko and CREDOR were lines under SEIKO ever since their point of inception. I'm not bothered by that at all since I know that SEIKO have always meant quality, and it's why that "Cheap watch" brand name didn't sway me from buying my Ananta Spring Drive Moonphase.

Objectively GS/Credor/Seiko combines incredible fit/finish/technology and specs that make it a better watch on paper.. but for many, dare I even say majority, it ultimately boils down to emotion conveyed by the watch and whether the overall aesthetic/brand images floats your boat despite the objective comparison.
whether we like it or not, many people pay the premium for the brand as that is major part of decision and why companies spend $10's -100's million on establishing and maintaining the brand.
Many seasoned collectors who had pretty much everything, get past the big brand phase, and start to appreciate objective quality but, for the vast majority of consumers, the brand recognition ,it's associated collectibility and desirability still is #1 criterea. The two watch companies target different buyers in terms of what element of the purchase decision is important for them.

Also, dimensions sometimes doesn't tell the story as lug to lug, bezel to dial ratio affects it..I have 41mm that looks huge , 40mm that looks tiny on the wrist and 43/44 that fit ideally.

So no proper dimensions list, no mentioned of the glass of the watch, we need to watch like the whole thing to randomly hear that its a spring drive, and that the bezel is sapphire. But no showing how the GMT works, how the bezel feels and turns, no day/outdoor shots of the watch?! Literally nobody can even consider buying a watch by watching this specific video for sure! The great in-door dim light shots cannot sold anybody on buying a watch, how much time will somebody use it in those conditions?

Movement wise, so far grand seiko is one of the greatest.
But size and dimension, my newly purchased Baltic Aquascaphe is better. Like 39.5 mm perfect.

Watch Collecting Strategy yeah I don’t know why Grand Seiko is so obsessed with big assed case size but end up losing balls on the bracelet dimension.
It’s like “ok we gonna go big on the divers but we don’t dare to do the same to make our bracelet 22mm uniformly.
Come on Grand Seiko, make your dress watch 38-40 and 20mm uniformly and dive watches in 40mm / 20mm or 44mm / 22mm!

I'm just here to +1 because you mention the repeating damn issue Seiko and Grand Seiko faces; the diameter of the watch. Imagine a Marine Master at 39mm with 20mm width lug spacing. They could just pick an arbitrary diver and shrink the diameter and maintain a 20mm lug and their collection would make my wallet look miserable.

Diameter is never a problem of Seiko sports watches because they usually have short lugs. Don't judge the wearability by diameter. Trust me you will definitely feel 39mm too small for MM because of its small dial size.

    • @jamespalsson746
      @jamespalsson746 Před 4 lety

@@leyay7540 Yes Lug2Lug is the most important factor for wearability. It is a fair point that the MM is a bad candidate for a 39mm. However I find myself urging for a small package when it comes to the dial/bezel real estate as well. I am probably too old fashioned, since I like the look of a smaller diver.
I have tried even a 47mm diameter Seiko diver, and I do think I could "wear" it, because the fit was surprisingly not a problem. Another watch that sits well regardless of its diameter is the 43mm Oris Aquis (I believe).
Still, I don't want a plate on my arm.

Grand seiko and high end seiko and one and the same I own two of each and take my word for it besides those hold their value if you in it for long term or car for the stupid value retention game which I don’t care for

Seiko builds great watches no doubt however their dial design with the power reserve looks ugly and messy and the watch is too big and thick. If they were around the 1k price point I might consider them but not at 7k+

I don't think money wise, from a pre-own stand point, is worth to pull for this watch. You can get a GS GMT version with a overall better watch at around the same price or even less expensive. Maybe in the future when more of these are available on grey market and the price comes down a bit, then definitely worth looking into.

    • @watchcollectingstrategy

The quality is definitely Grand Seiko level but that said. It is hard to justify for many the price. But it is definitely worth it in my opinion. 40mm would have been perfect! Thanks for watching Daniel!

The grand seiko gmt sports model is nowhere near as good as this one you have to try it on your hand to see that since grand seiko sports watches generally are little lacking on the design language and I have sbg031

The watch is worth it without question. The only thing that bothers me is the GMT hand. Everything else punches way above weight when it comes to value price proposition.

  • @carscigarsscotchnwatches5158

45mm check, 14.7mm thick, check, no double secure clasp like a flip lock, check. $500 sumo case design, check. $5500 price tag and no GS just standard Seiko on dial, check. It is a good looking watch, but I could never justify the price tag. I am sure it is a great watch but at $5k, I would expect it to have it's own case design and it be smaller than that. I own several GS's and tons of Seikos, the Sumo and Marinemaster being my favorites. I like this watch but not at that price. I think the proper price point should have been 3k ish.
